Hillwilliam -> Do you consider this irresponsible journalism? (2/11/2012 9:47:59 AM)

I was watching FOX this morning and noticed on the scroll underneath something about the Pentagon wanting to spend 86 or so Million dollars (face it, as govt spending goes a drop in the bucket) to make sure our Bunker Buster bombs were operational and ready to go.

Lesseeeeeeeeeeee. Bunker buster bombs are a sudden concern.

Iran has it's nuclear facilities deep in a ....well, I'll be damned, a BUNKER.

YO FOX. Why don't you just write the Ayatollah a fucking LETTER next time so he can beef up his anti aircraft defenses a little more.

Loose lips sink ships and IF we are going to bomb those bunkers, I'd just as soon every one of our men and women comes home safely.

Did anyone else notice this particular scroll and what are your opinions on whether it was irresponsible or not?

I agree, and it's not just Fox, all the networks do that stuff!
Also,....how is this going to cost $86 M?
They just have technicians go in there and test the bombs who are already on the payroll anyway!
What,...they all fell off a forklift truck? Why (wouldn't) they still work? How many technicians would you need 10, 20, 30?
And, *we* don't need to be getting involved with Iran, let the Europeans and Israel handle that if at all.
If they choose to they're more than capable.

I think that the appropriation was for 81 million.

Not a sudden concern. The MOP is something that has been being worked on by Boeing and the Air Force.

Waitaminute. I thought that the left has been saying that Iran is perfectly peaceful and only wants nukes for power generation. Are you saying that this is not so?

Blame the defense appropriators. This was probably on C-Span or put out as a press release.

Actually, there have been no potential targets commented on. I will say that the timing leaves me little doubt, though.

No, I don't think it was irresponsible. This information was all press release stuff. And no, I have not turned on the TV today.

Regarding the amount, I was basically saying that it wasnt an exactly newsworthy expenditure on the federal level. 81 Billion? yeah, 81 Million? Why are you bothering to report it?

They have been working on them this is true. we've had em since not long after the first Iraqi invasion. Another thing that makes them highly not newsworthy.

Who gives a shit what the left is saying? The topic is "was this reporting responsible?"

I mean, lack of Nuclear/Biological/Chemical capability in an opponent has never stopped us bombing the shit out of someone before has it?[:D]

The defense appropriators who made the press release are maximally culpable but not everything you hear needs to be broadcast to the world.

So, you agree that the most likely target is the nuclear bunkers. Is it a responsible press release/report or does it endanger our servicemen?

I hate to say it, but Fox did nothing wrong by reporting it. It appears that it did come from a news release. If there was any risk to Americans, that (obviously) wouldn't have happened.  And the fact that it came out -- even if it had been only leaked -- tells me as an editor that the Pentagon wants it out there, as part of the general sabre-rattling, to remind Iran it has bunker busters.

In fact, it's nice to see the fake news organization informing citizens for once. Democracy can't function if citizens are kept in the dark about where they're money is going, and why.

Hmmmmm.  Not that the US really has a "left" -- a few dangerous centrists, maybe -- but I must have missed it:  Could you quote or link to anyone saying that "Iran is perfectly peaceful and only wants nukes for power generation"?

Not only that but part of the drum beat to prepare us for war, sad to say.

[sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif] Yeah, right! Like we really know where our money is being spent!

That was just some silly.

No, I do not think that it endangers our servicemen. It is possible that it may even help them if it encourages the guys working on the nukes to be stressed and encourages Iran to spend money on other defenses and re-enforcing the bunker. Money spent elsewhere that could have been used on the nuke program.

Even cooler than a 30,000 pound bomb - an electromagnetic rail gun [:)]: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/02/rail-gun/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=socialmedia&utm_campaign=twitterclickthru

There are a few, Usually of the pro PLO sort, who deny Iran has ever done anything bad.

Come on. If this were a big secret, it wouldn't have played out this way.

You know, the military is aware that the media exist.

That's a constant battle, yes, and seems to be a losing battle in the US in recent years.. but God help you if you give up that fight.

You should know where your money is being spent, and governments should be constantly reminded that the people in charge -- citizens -- should be getting all the details. There are about three secrets worth keeping, and they get kept, but show me some official finger-wagging about the "irresponsibility" of reporting some secret, and I'll show you a guy who's up to something he really wouldn't like voters or prosecutors to know about. Which is why Johnson said that thing about patriotism and scoundrels.

Which is why I loved, loved, loved getting out stories about spending they were trying to keep under wraps.  It's not their money.

In the US? Who "deny Iran has ever done anything bad"? Really? Is this mainstream media or the Hinkyville World Journal?

Could you name one?

The media isn't there to be responsible.  Being responsible isn't part of its remit.

angelikaJ -> RE: Do you consider this irresponsible journalism? (2/11/2012 2:12:21 PM)

Hilly, I didn't see the scroll, but instead of seeing it as irresponsible journalism, I tend to see it as planned somewhat subtle declaration of what might happen IF the Iranian's don't behave.

edit: awkward wording

All of us. We all love Ahmadinejad and his regime, despite it being a bit fluffy and limp-wristed-liberal at times. Please try to remember that, Tazzy.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Do you consider this irresponsible journalism? (2/11/2012 4:43:42 PM)

It appears that some of our Right of Center posters feel that since the POentagon released the info, FOX was duty bound to report it.

Does this mean that FOX is now the 'mouthpiece' for the pentagon?

Fox has always been the mouthpiece for the pentagon...and Wall Street...and Big Oil...and the NRA....among others.

But i can't find any posts claiming Fox was duty bound to report it. Have they been deleted?
