This reminds me of when I was stationed in Okinawa. People who never left the dorm hated living on the island.

I loved it! I learned how to scuba dive, went camping, did touristy things - it was wonderful (except for being too hot in the summer.) I got married and we explored together. There was an adventure around every corner.
