I honestly didn't think she was all that. As Stella can probably agree with, there are countless actors/(singers) who can beat the pants off of current actors/singers. They generally just don't have the connections.

As I said in my earlier posts I was never a big fan of her music in general but I'd certainly like to see where the line is forming of all of those equally talented yet connectionless folks who could "beat the pants off her" on this.

That line is going to be rather short, comprised solely of fools with an over inflated sense of their talent [:)]

I dunno. I just wasn't impressed with that superbowl performance.

Tastes vary, Greedy, but it's a lot better than this one.

Whitney Houston's Last Performance

"Toxicology reports not available for weeks."
Well, that usually means they think it's drugs. She died in the bathtub, seems to be a lot of druggies die like that.
She surly didn't choke on a bar of soap.

Yes.

I think someone took a few too many xanax and had a nap in the tub. I can think of much worse ways to go.

Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston (1985)(Couln't copy the album cover)

I had this cassette tape when it first came out. I remember thinking how she looked like a young queen. What a waste of talent.

I'd not seen this before (I'm a Brit and not into large bowls).

It's a wonderful example of reasons why you Americans are the most powerful nation on Earth.

A singer (competent, great - whatever your take) clearly enjoying belting out your National Anthem (enjoying = she finds joy in doing it); servicemen stiff with pride; Stars and Stripes just everywhere; banners saying God Bless America and Go USA.

I assume two rival teams are about to compete in a game: elsewhere, and in the UK, one would only see flags and banners of the rival teams, hear partisan chants. No doubt those were there too but for this initial moment you had thousands upon thousands of you united, unembarrassed, simply pouring out pride in your nation. (And you seem to do this somewhere every single day).

While you're able at times to forget your differences, your rivalries, and unite like this how can you fail?

ashjor911 -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 4:08:14 AM)

there an old saying here "when Someone Die, he get his legs taller" = when someone die some people remember them ..... why
its 2:07 & they putting the "BODYGUARD" ...... honoring her death?

It worked at the Nuremberg rallies, too.  Sorry to pour cold water.  Just saying.   No doubt a dose of it now and then's pretty harmless.

Go to any sporting event in the US and you will see this every time the anthem is played. Drive down any street in the United States on any day and you will see countless American flags flying daily. And on most overpasses of any highway. Placed there by citizens, not government agencies.
Our pride is unique and over the top.

I think what made her performance of it extraordinary in a cultural sense, was that she was the only person to perform the National Anthem and have it reach the top 20 on the US Hot 100.
The proceeds were turned over to charity.
10 years later after September 11, 2001, It was released again and made it to #6 on the same chart and was certified platinum.
The proceeds again were turned over to the firefighters and victims of the attacks.

GreedyTop -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 5:40:46 AM)

Ok. I still think it wasn't all that great as a performance (which was lipsynched, anyway... not that theres anything wrong with that ;) )

We're talking about a person dying, not who enjoyed her songs or not.

I loved her music & was hoping for a come back after her divorce. Sadly that will never happen. Just because she didn't die from a physical illness doesn't make this less tragic.
Alot of us were able to crawl out of the gutter that drugs put us in, sadly she could not thus wasting a wonderful talent for the almighty crack pipe.

Regarding the posts about all the hoopla because she was famous and the average joe not making the headlines when they die, that's the way it is. The average joe isn't famous, noone knows him/her and they're thought of as just another dead crack head. What was their contribution to me? Did they make me feel good by singing? Did I enjoy their movies?

Whitney Houston may have been a crack head but she wasn't the average joe. She worked hard to achieve her fame and deserves the many tributes.

Just this fans [sm=2cents.gif]

slvemike4u -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 6:54:18 AM)

No Virgin ,it doesn't make this "less tragic",what it does it make it is more of a "waste",than a tragedy. It was avoidable...and that is from someone who once did crawl out of that gutter .

Hillwilliam -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 7:10:57 AM)

Apparently, it is as we feared. Preliminary reports say drugs and alcohol. [X(]

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 8:12:24 AM)

Her death definitely made me very sad. Even though she's been out of the spot light for quite some time, it is difficult not to be sad about the loss of someone who at the height of her career had one of the greatest voices in contemporary music. While people might not personally be into her style of music or vocal arrangements, everyone who is in the music industry, critics and performers alike, considered her a singer of tremendous talent. Not many people come around, ever, who can sing the way she did - and very few people who are part of the music industry would be dissenters to that claim.

While I don't believe she wrote most of her music, and one of her biggest hits, was, of course, penned by Dolly Parton, she was still a remarkable talent. And for those who want to get into the Dolly Parton debate, even Dolly Parton loved Whitney Houston's rendition of her song

The other comment that I have is that addiction kills. Most people who try drugs in their lives do not have the "wiring" to make it an addictive habit. For those who are "wired" for addiction it is a slow descent into hell. Of those who are "wired" for addiction, only a very small percentage are ever able to truly break free of their addiction. Rehab, 12-steps, any approach like this, requires tremendous will power for someone to succeed against the desire for the drugs. For those of you who have young people in your lives, whether children, nieces/nephew, students, etc., I want to share the following. "Just say no" is really the only way to go. Because current science has no way of yet accurately predicting who is "wired" for addiction and who is not, even small experimentation with "safer" drugs, can lead to an addiction that is ultimately unshakeable. That is the plain reality. For those of you who think drugs are not a problem it is only because you have been blessed with the "wiring" to not make it addictive.

May Whitney Houston rest in peace. Because life as an addict is about as far from peaceful as it gets. It is a life of internal torment that is suffered on a daily basis, even from those who manage to kick their habit.

The coroner's office just held a press conference to say that they did not make that statement and that the amount of prescription drugs found in her room was small.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 8:57:03 AM)

I never got into her music, but it is always sad when someone who should have so much to live for dies so young.

RacerJim -> RE: Whitney Houston has died (2/13/2012 9:01:40 AM)

Yet another pop music icon succumbs to alcohol and drugs. Sad, truely sad.
