I loved how Steven Tyler mentioned they both had problems with their demons, only she lost.
This matches the experience of my friends with addiction. I find it very harsh when people say that addicts are just selfish, or just party animals with no respect for themselves or others, who don't love their parents or their children, etc., and that if they just cared enough they could easily get themselves clean. The reality is far more complex, and witnessing these struggles through the eyes of my friends, I have nothing but respect for the fact that becoming clean is very, very difficult, and that many people do lose the battle. I think disparaging or judging someone for losing the battle is cruel. I appreciate your perspective and the understanding and kindness that it represents. Being empathetic and sympathetic to the struggles of others is so very important.
