IS the latest Neal Stephenson the same when you don't have a kilo of paper resting on your tummy? I THINK NOT!

ROFL! I won't comment on where my mind took that one... but... cheers to tummy pleasers!

I still wish for the old days ... picking up a newspaper at breakfast.

But no more ...

Up at 5 am ... talking with India at 6 am ...

And like who put this economy together? ( F'ing Republicans led by G Bush)

The jobs are overseas ... we need to figure out how to tax them ...

(and those here who make this possible!).

Ha! Isn't that what amazon wish lists are for, Darling?

Excellent news, Seeking, we'll have lots to celebrate at our post-season dinner!

Mike, you can also use any android/i-phone and/or laptop/netbook as an e-reader. Kindle has a free app download for all these devices, so you may not even need an e-reader if you already have one/more of these. Endless free books to download via Amazon/library system. You'll be reading forever.

Though smartphone screens are a bit small, I can still read off mine without glasses. It was really great...I went to 'Vagina Monologues' tonight and had a few minutes to kill in the theater before it started. I whipped out the phone and finished a chapter of 'Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself' while waiting. Free amazon download. Good book so far. Here's the link.

I agree, I don't have an e-reader either but I have thousands of ebooks that I read on my phone and/or iPod touch.  I don't like the readers because they are so big I might as well be holding a hardback book, which doesn't appeal to me or my wrists.

I think if you are checking it out and seeing if it's something you will like, it's a great way to start by using what you already have and then upgrading later.  That allows you to determine what you do and don't like in regards to reading on a device so that you can make an informed decision based on what you want.  There are apps for both Kindle and Nook as well as many other types of ereader apps, so you can also check out the formatting and figure out which will work best for you in that regard.

I rarely use the Kindle app because it costs money to transfer my existing books as you have to use whispernet (or whatever it is, Kindle specific) and I can't share or borrow easily with it.

I don't use the Nook app, either.

iBooks is crap and freezes up once you hit a certain threshold - about 300-500 books.

I use ereader Pro, which is B&N and free.  Free to use, free to upload books.  I have thousands of books on it and it doesn't lock up or freeze.  I typically buy books off of other sites and then convert them to whatever format I want to use, PDB or ePub, using Calibre.

Myrgth,

If your using calibre to convert, You dont need to pay to upload your books to the kindle app...

you need to just connect the device... open the folder on your phone (named kindle) and plop in the mobi formated books..

Viola shows up on your device free

I read almost every Lovecraft story extant on a website thanks to my android phone, and OH yes my glasses. I heart my phone, but the battery life on a reader is appealing.

While we're on the subject...does anyone know of an app that'll convert text to speech on an android phone?

I love audiobooks from my library, but sometimes the only format available for a certain title is e-pub, e-book or kindle. Text to speech would be really handy while I'm hiking or doing stuff around the house.

Admittedly, glasses make the phone MUCH easier!

I have been having the most fun messing with my amazon wishlist!! So many books to look for this spring!! And there is a Kindle with a keyboard! So of course I had to add it, so I can do all kinds of reading about it before not buying it. I was the same way with the netbooks before I got my android phone.

I indulged in some pre-owned betsey johnson shoes on ebay, too! Summer is only four months away, people!!

I have the Nook Simple Touch and love it.  I didn't want bells and whistles, games, internet, etc, etc,   I just wanted to, well....read.
The simple touch is small, very lightweight and fits easily into my purse so I can pull it out and read it.  The other readers all seemed too bulky and heavy.

I, too, have always loved the feel of a book in my hands but if I'm reading War and Peace, I don't want to have to lug that heavy book around.  No matter how lengthy a book is, it never weighs more than my nook.

Can't beat the price either.

My Kindle does text to speech but I can't stand the robotic voice. An audiobook has to sound interesting and they just don't in that voice
