If there's sciatic damage being done, then there's been too much impact to the lower spine (L4/5, S1/3). That tends to be more problematic with 'heavy' impact play ('thuddy' toys, like heavy paddles, baseball bats, etc) even on, umm, well-padded bottoms, but even light-weight impact directly on the lower spine can cause swelling that involves the discs, nerves, etc. I haven't seen the video clip in question, but it's entirely possible to safely strike both butt-cheeks at once, provided that whatever being used doesn't hit or deform the tailbone, sacral or lumbar areas. That said, there's a lot of variation in padding over the spine itself, and in how surface or deep bruises extend for different people. The same cane-mark that gives some only a delightful sting might cause others a crippling hematoma. When in doubt, it's safer to work one cheek at a time, and impact on the spine itself is quite hazardous.
