What goes through your mind when you see dozens and dozens of 'friends' on someone's profile? So many that they literally bury the narrative...if there even IS narrative?

Depends.  If they're local to the person, I think he/she's active locally.  If they're all 18-23 yo impossibly gorgeous girls, I think he's an HNG that hasn't figured out the fakes yet.  If there's an assortment of genders, orientations, and roles, I think he/she's well rounded.

Again, this is most likely just the cynic in me speaking but to be honest I think the same thing I think when I see people with a million friends on...facebook...myspace...google+....twitter....etc. No one knows, or actually likes, that many people.

Um. I really know most of those people. Been here a lonnng time. Not all of them are on the site anymore, but I hate to delete them, out of sentiment.

I think some people have a very strange idea of what a friend is. Chatting online a couple of times does not make you a friend.  I am on a chat site (I have to do something to ease the boredom of daytime TV) and I am often asked by people that have only said "Hi, How are you? Can we be friends?

Friends to me are people you have met and have some sort of relationship with.  Having worked in the media and being old I have a fair number of friends on Facebook and a large number of contacts on LinkedIn but they are all people I have physically met.

Well, there you are. It's about one's definition of a "friend" on these social site.

If you see the word "friend" on these social sites to mean any of these and more -associate, acquaintance, buddy, companion, family member, friend then one may have a more open opinion of people having many "friends."

ETA: punctuation

I think the key part of your post is "and have some relationship with" and I disagree with the notion that a face to face meeting has to have taken place for that to happen. I'm sure there are people in these very forums who feel a certain kinship with a few of the other posters who they have never met but with whom they correspond with on a regular basis. I don't chat much these days but I did quite often for a number of years. There are people I chatted with several times a week for several years although I never met them (some I did meet). I'm not sure where exactly they fit in the friend spectrum but I feel they do belong there.

To the OP, I don't think anything of it except that they must be very active on this site.

~FR~

Idon't think I've ever really given it much thought, because I don't generally peruse profiles, let alone friend lists, but if I did, I'd probably have to go with Steven's answer.

As far as MY friend list goes, I am like Hibbie.

I think that they see collarme like they do facebook, meaning the more friends they have the more popular they think they are. It's kinda like high school and in my mind it says they're immature or a generation Y person like my daughter meaning waaaayyyy too young.

Oh, sometimes I think they are collectors, sometimes I think maybe they are friendly people.

I havent but I think once refused a friends request, and that was from a scammer profile trying to look respectable.

I think they have so many friends that they dont need me as one.. Why be one when it doesnt mean anything to them or you? I really dont want to be used that way..

When i was a child I collected stamps.. collecting friends is an online version of that.. it doesnt mean anything.. unless you have a way of making money off all those friends, like if you put popular vids on youtube and get paid by the amount of visitors that click on ads or however that works..

Perhaps for some narcissistic 18 year olds, the more friends, means a validation of some sort on how attractive they are.. sort of like an online beauty contest..

I dont get into having friends.. not unless i get a linkedin, youtube, FB business page or some other site that makes $$$$ for me somehow.. but thats not how most people do it (except for the fin/wishlist domme types here or Lucy with her website.. not sure how many friends she has tho.. but i dont think that is why she is here anyway)..

I know who my friends are.  I don't have to list them on a web site for everyone to see.

I agree. I know people on here with long lists of friends and it's because they know a lot of people.

edited to add. I think it is sad that so many people would judge someone else by the number of friends they have on their profile. You don't know squat about the person and to come here put them down for it seem extremely judgmental and small minded.

Ron.. I have refused quite a few friends requests, simply because they have come from folks that when I see their nick/profile Iam left wondering WHO THE FUCK *ARE* YOU??

My profile states if we haven't interacted, I aint adding you (or to that effect).

lol When someone i dont know and never interacted with sends me a friend request and I see a long list of friends on his profile.. yeah,.. I'm gonna make a judgement call..

Everything you do on this site reflects who you are, from your profile name to your profile, your pics and your posts on here.. it gives people an impression of you.. the number of friends you have is also part of it.. Everyone does that, regardless of how they try to say they dont..
