Attention! Important!
Especially to the ladies we all care about...
A MESSAGE ...FROM THE OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL
STATE OF MICHIGAN :

SITUATION..
While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it.
For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Canton PD and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check....

"There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car.

"There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police Department where gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in it....waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby.

"Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person -- woman -- will be dragged into the woods, beaten and raped, and usually left for dead. If it's a man, they're usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, too.

DO NOT STOP FOR ANY REASON!!! DIAL 9-1-1 AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW, BUT DON 'T EVEN SLOW DOWN.

THESE ARE DESPERATE TIMES AND THESE ARE UNSAVORY INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL TAKE DESPERATE MEASURES TO GET WHAT THEY WANT."

Please talk to your loved ones about this. This is a new tactic being used. Please be safe.

Get started NOW -- SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES TO BE CAREFUL AND BE AWARE OF EVERYTHING AROUND THEM SO AS NOT TO BECOME THE VICTIM.

WARNING # 2:
Some knew about the red light on cars, but not Dialing 112.
It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her to never pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called,112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone feature. I tried it on my AT&T phone & it said, "Dialing Emergency Number."
Especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going on to a safe place.

*Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about "Dialing, 112"

You may want to send this to every Man, Woman & Youngster you know; it may well save a life.

Bullshit.  http://www.snopes.com/crime/gangs/carseat.asp

Whenever you hear some crap like this, ALWAYS fact check it before disseminating it far and wide.

kalikshama -> RE: Sharing this info-For your safety and your loved ones (2/14/2012 8:42:44 PM)

Yay for Snopes.

When I am emailed false Urban Legends like this I always let the sender and everyone on the cc list know.

And here's the Lauren story: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/fakecop.asp

GoodlilGirlForU -> RE: Sharing this info-For your safety and your loved ones (2/14/2012 8:52:55 PM)

Jeezus why is everyone on this board so rude and ready to pass judgement?? I was just passing on info that was posted by a friend on Facebook. There's nothing in the information that's harmful to anyone and could be very valid events. Jaded much?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Sharing this info-For your safety and your loved ones (2/14/2012 8:55:20 PM)

Yes, I am jaded by getting shit like you posted. A simple Internet search would have revealed that this crap is a legend. Spreading crap like that makes people less cautious about real warnings.

kalikshama -> RE: Sharing this info-For your safety and your loved ones (2/14/2012 8:55:44 PM)

Why don't you look up the damage caused by passing around Urban Legends and get back to us on "no harm done."

JanahX -> RE: Sharing this info-For your safety and your loved ones (2/14/2012 9:13:31 PM)

I could be rude ... but I wont be.

Youre passing on false information. That in itself is harmful to anyone that reads this shit and when in fact needs to call 911. Face it chico - you are WRONG.

and this in fact is me being N-I-C-E.

Next post how we all shouldnt all stand in front of a mirror in the dark and say "Bloody Mary" five times.

CLAIM: The worldwide emergency number for cell phones is 112.

Not quite. 112 is the Europe-wide emergency phone number. Throughout most of the European Union and some neighboring countries, dialing 112 will connect callers to local emergency services. The system doesn't include North and South America, Asia, or Africa.

According to some sources, many — but not all — cell phone models are pre-programmed to redirect calls made to any of the most common emergency numbers (e.g., 911, 999, 000, 112) to the proper local services regardless of the caller's location. And many — but not all — cell phone models and service providers will allow the most common emergency numbers to be dialed even if the caller is outside his or her regular service area, or the phone lacks a SIM card. However, no mobile phones can put through calls, emergency or otherwise, from locations where no cell service exists at all.

Within the U.S., dialing 911 remains the most direct and reliable way of contacting emergency services regardless of what kind of phone you use. Don't dial 112, unless you want to play Russian Roulette with your life.

~ FR ~

Here's something else to watch out for if you're male. In large parking lots like Walmart and Home Depot, you may return to your car to find a couple of scantily clad girls washing your windshield. If you offer them a tip just to be nice rather than make an issue of it, they will tell you that they would really rather have a lift across to the MacDonald's or BurgerKing.

If you agree, once they're in the car one of the girls will strip and start crawling all over you. The scam is to steal your wallet. I know, because this happened to me on February 3rd and 4th, again on the 10th, and twice on the 11th. Be prepared. You can purchase cheap wallets for a few dollars at most discount stores.

If you forward it to 25 friends, microsoft will donate $2 to your bank account by midnight on the night of your true loves birthday but if you don't, bad things will happen to angels.
It's true, a friend of a friend had it happen.

Wrong. The misinformation is harmful. It makes people less aware of real threats, and more inclined to ignore real warnings and generally not behave in the safest manner possible in a situation where they actually should. Also, should any public office actually issue such a warning, most of the people receiving it would ignore it, because they would assume it was a false warning (since there are so many false ones; the "boy who cried wolf" writ large).

Also, your choice to uncritically pass on such misinformation makes you a channel for other people who do so, massively multiplying the reach of those who create hoaxes, for which you reduce yourself to a willing instrument (which would be neat if it were a consenting thing). And to illustrate the importance: in one particularly important case, people were passing on lethal advice on dealing with heart trouble, under the guise of it supposedly being life saving advice. A warning against that was issued by the surgeon general, as the advice would almost always cause the person heeding it to die. That's a case where people like you have likely caused people to die, from doing what you just did: pass on a hoax as if it were a fact, with no preamble or caveat.

I have done the same myself a few times.

For instance, the aforementioned misinformation about heart trouble, which I passed on from the WP edit without checking it until after having passed it on, for which I am rightfully ashamed, as you should be for your own botch. When you don't give clear attribution, you end up making it seem as if you're passing on advice that you're personally vouching for, and claiming that it is from a legitimate source. That causes a lot of other people to assume that it's legitimate advice, which makes you personally responsible for it.

At least try to preface such posts with a clear warning that you're just relaying something (and from what source you're relaying it), so that others with the same problem won't propagate the misinformation with the assumption that it's okay because you vetted it (although, of course, now you've had a poor start, so it will be less likely that your vetting matters to people in the future).

It may seem harsh and rude, but it is in fact you that have been rude and reckless.

I wish you well, hence this advice.

Edit: Late to the party again.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Not necessarily snopes, but it's always good to check and see if things have some truth to them. Otherwise one gets "Obama setting up death panels to kill granny!" and similar preposterous misinformation.

Don't be discouraged, young Missy.

To Aswad- How was I rude? I apologized and am ready to move on. I don't get why people keep bashing me constantly. I apologize and will certainly NEVER post anything here ever again. [:o]

I don't get the "rude" thing either. Post all you want; this site is as much yours as anyone elses (excepting the owners). (I assume new posters aren't socks; I don't want to be a permacynic.)
