Hah-I was well on the way to being an early metalhead (Defined at the time as Motorhead, Sabbath, RJD, Deep Purple, Maiden, Priest, BOC etc...and crazy enough now, Zeppelin was also seen as metal, and not just metal, but THE metal band, which doesn't fit their music at all) when I got hit by the Grateful Dead on my way to a Megadeth concert and things were never quite the same. But traces of metal lingered. To this day, Alice in Chains "Dirt" might be my favorite release ever. Meanwhile, sheesh-where's Greedy? I woulda pegged her as an old skool metalgal all the way. Edited to add some early bitching ass Sabbath. In hindsight, it's kinda crazy how close these guys were to mixing aspects of punk, speed and standard metal way fucking back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvuI8d57N9I
