Iamsemisweet -> Conservatives seem to be socially tone deaf (2/16/2012 9:34:39 AM)

First Hannity's ridiculous "sausage fest" and now this.  If nothing else, these people should be asking themselves why there are NO women religious leaders:

This morning, Democrats tore into House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) for preventing women from testifying before a hearing examining the Obama administration’s new regulation requiring employers and insurers to provide contraception coverage to their employees. Republicans oppose the administration’s rule and have sponsored legislation that would allow employers to limit the availability of birth control to women. Ranking committee member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) had asked Issa to include a female witness at the hearing, but the Chairman refused, arguing that “As the hearing is not about reproductive rights and contraception but instead about the Administration’s actions as they relate to freedom of religion and conscience, he believes that Ms. Fluke is not an appropriate witness.” And so Cummings, along with the Democratic women on the panel, took their request to the hearing room, demanding that Issa consider the testimony of a female college student. But the California congressman insisted that the hearing should focus on the rules’ alleged infringement on “religious liberty,” not contraception coverage, and denied the request. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) walked out of the hearing in protest of his decision, citing frustration over the fact that the first panel of witnesses consisted only of male religious leaders against the rule. Holmes Norton said she will not return, calling Issa’s chairmanship an “autocratic regime.” Watch a compilation of the heated exchange: A picture of the witness table: [image]http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Google-ChromeScreenSnapz387.png[/image] Issa also dismissed the Democrats’ woman witness as a “college student’ who does not “have the appropriate credentials” to testify before his committee.

Your link has expanded my vocab:

As of now, Collins and Snowe appear to be the only Republicans behind this massively bi-partisan compromise on Obama’s part, whereas the teahadist elements that are today’s GOP remain reliably rancorous and recalcitrant.

A combination of Teabagger and Jihadist, a Teahadist is a domestic terrorist masquerading as a "patriot" in the US. The Teabagger feels that the only way to uphold truth, justice and the Constitution is to violently attack and threaten those who happen to disagree with said Teabagger's views. Phrases such as "defend the Constitution", and "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" are often heard from Teahadists, although how much they actually understand what those mean is in debate.

The OP: So the issue is social and not constitutional, is it?

Let's see, Cummings wants to talk about it from a social perspective and Issa from a constitutional one.

What's the hearing about?

The hearing is entitled “Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State. Has the Obama Administration Trampled on Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience?”

Yeah I can see why the socially conscious / emotionally driven might be upset about that, the constitution being an impediment to progressive reforms.

mnottertail -> RE: Conservatives seem to be socially tone deaf (2/16/2012 10:28:10 AM)

Women were given a voice in the constitution, and a fair share of representative government, or were you thinking of another constitution they jaw about down there in the house?

Yanno, that 'We, the People' crap that always interferes in these constitutional conversations.

No.

Any other business before the committee?

Adjourned.

As an aside, If someone don't like the regulations involved in running a health insurance company, they are free to close up shop and go into any other business they care to. That's called FREEDOM. And it's way better than the Roman Catholic/Republican Death Panels we see demanding they Health Insurers obey them.

Ever stop for a second and consider this is all Satan's plan? There's a Pope who served ADOLPH FUCKING HITLER sitting in the vatican giving you these crazy marching orders. And you think this is divinely inspired?

I think you misunderstood the irony of my comment.  You know there are women religious leaders, and I know there are women religious leaders, but the people elected to Congress apparently don't.  Gives one pause, doesn't it?

Women, of course, having no interest in the constitution.  The "social" aspect of it is that it looks pretty ridiculous to have a religious debate (with no women witnesses) about a controversy that arose because of the issue of women's reproductive rights.  In short: It looks bad.  Can't believe those yahoos didn't realize that.

Sandra Fluke, the subject of this hue and cry about "women not being permitted to testify," is not a religious leader.

She's a student at Georgetown.

Yes, Conservatives must be tone deaf on social issues because ONLY the Democrat Party and their ilk know whats best for America. What close minded, intolerant, and idiotic thing to say. Doubly stupid as you force your will upon the American people, most of who, regardless of what the media tells you, simply do not want it. There was no birth control shortage, people who want birth control can get birth control. There is no issue here, other than the one Democrats dreamed up in a fantasy of tyranny as they force their will upon the people. It would not be so bad, except that left wing policy puts people out of work.
Enjoy.

Good thing you wrote it, not sure they could hear you otherwise[8D]

Well, 32DDD, I can't speak for most American people, like you apparently can, but I did just want to say "nice tits".  I think most American people would agree with me.

I don't think the Dems were the ones who were presenting testimony from so called "religious leaders".  Don't you think the repubs, as part of their hand picked witnesses, should have had the brains to toss in a few women religious leaders?

Apparently not.  Again, socially tone deaf.  And they are being criticized for it roundly.  How could they not have expected that?

Just another proof of the authoritarian nature of the right wing.

Which should have more rights, individuals or organizations like the Catholic Church? When did we decide organizations or corporations should have rights at all?

In what universe is there a shortage of birth control? this isnt about the shortage of birth control, this is about the tyranny of the catholic church trying to make all women, not just catholic women, abide by their beliefs.
Please feel free to rejoin reality when you learn the facts

True enough. Point taken. But there's something askew with the Dem's radar too, or they would have proposed a female religious leader. Making a stink over Issa declining to hear testimony from some college student seems kinda... huh?
