I'm on my own with quite liking Matt Smith, then...

Nope not on your own lol, though Matt Smith is deffo not my favourite...

I grew up with Colin Baker, but Patrick Troughton always made me smile when watching :)

There will always be a soft spot in my heart for the first grumpy, disgruntled old time lord, William Hartnell. He made the character quite believable.

I agree that Tom Baker the fourth incarnation of the doctor truly was awesome. He gets credit from making the series a hit in the states and he gave the previous grumpy and bumbling doctors a fresh angle with his much needed sense of humor. However, I don;t think he was the best doctor. The extremely eccentric behavior used to pull off that humor made his version of the doctor eventually grow a little thin and less believable… even if he had the some of coolest assistants of all.
Why Baker was great: video, which box is bigger?

In my opinion, David Tennant, the tenth incarnate, is the best Dr Who ever! David carried the original attitude of Hartnell’s version by holding a grudge about the destruction of his planet and being the last of his race. He pulled off Tom Baker’s eccentricity of thought processes, the tenuous relationship with the TARDIS and delivered it with Jon Pertwee’s savoir faire.

David also had Billie Piper as Rose Tyler who is the greatest assistant since Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen). BTW, Sladen she was both Jon Pertwee’s and Tom Baker’s assistant.

So if you really want to go head to head on a coolness litmus test, and factor in the doctor as whole, including Christopher Eccleston’s smoldering and moody version of the doctor… then put each and every doctor up against John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood. See how well they do.

It seems to me that David Tennant had all the aspects of the doctor, his series had the romance with Rose who ends up getting a personal clone of him that will “kiss” her and his adventures are as well constructed as any in the series. Yuppers, if I had only one Dr. Who to pick from, David Tennant gets my vote hands down.

Who was it?

Doctor who? And why all the "Tom Baker" answers? Was he a doctor of some significance?

o.O

PS: Who wouldn't love K-9, always running around respectfully saying "Master"? ;-)

I'm not having the Rose Tyler thing, as Billie Piper was far and away the worst sidekick Tennant had. She did work very well with Ecclestone, but spent the second season getting steadily more annoying, as the chemistry just wasn't there with Tennant. At all.

I may have been too busy looking at her ass to realize her performance waned as the season went on. So that kissing issue quelled it for ya?

No problem with the kissing issue: I just thought she got very irritating, very quickly. I was hoping she'd get eaten by a monster after the first half hour of the Victorian werewolves story, put it that way.
(If we're talking companion ass as a criteria, nobody's ever going to be in the same league as Nicola Bryant, though Lalla Ward and Wendy Padbury both get pretty close...)

I didn't care for Rose Tyler. Not the character or the
actress.
Elisabeth Sladen was my favorite followed by
Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward.
Lalla is married to Richard Dawkins.
She was also in a good cultish Hammer
horror movie in the early seventies.
I loved that Victorian werewolves episode.
It wouldn't have grieved me if they devoured
Rose as I recall she was quite annoying in
that episode.
What about Catherine Tate? Yay or nay?

I much prefer Catherine Tate in Doctor Who to as a comedienne, put it that way. I was actually surprised how good she was in that role after watching her fail to do stand up...

Catherine Tate I was pleasantly surprised by, she had her annoying moments (the worst probably when the Doctor's clone was copying her)
Rose Tyler I found more grating in the episode where she returned...

What still bugs me is whether the Doctor used up one of his regenerations after being shot by the Dalek...

I doubt that they're counting anymore.
There was that (wonderful) Tom Baker story where the Master was trying to regenerate a twelfth time and nearly destroyed Gallifrey in the process. The limits are probably there because all of the time lords were using the same resources to do that. Now there aren't any other time lords left, it won't be a problem anymore.

I didn't start watching Dr. Who until the series started again in 2005. I remember flipping past it a few times in high school but for some reason didn't watch it. Stupid me.
I agree 100% with RS though. David Tennant is definitely MY doctor. I grieved when he left. Matt Smith is too foppish for me. I need more sex appeal. I wish it had been David Tennant in The Doctor's Wife rather than Matt Smith. Matt Smith did a good job. Tennant just would have been better.

I've since become a huge fan of Sarah Jane Smith (the episode "School Reunion" where she and The Doctor were reunited was terrific). I LOVE Rose.. I think she is amazing and I came close to hitting the "OK" button on this post just now with Rose as my favorite companion. But you know what? RIVER SONG IS THE FUCKING COOLEST!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhjGCCmY4qA

I have to add, when Catherine Tate first came on the show, I couldn't stand her. Then I grew to love her character and their relationship, especially since sihe was the only companion he had that didn't fall in love with him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yE-3cEqZkU

Oh dear G-d YES!!! More Captain Jack please please please please???
There were only two things from Christopher Eccleston's performance as the Doctor that I really, really enjoyed. The first was from the episode, The End of The World, "I give you the gift of air from my lungs..." (I was on the floor!! LOL) and the second was every time he flirted with Captain Jack (which btw, Tennant never did. ) I tried to like him, I really did but he was too goofy for me.

My son and I are in the process of catching up on the original series while we wait for April to slowly arrive. I have a feeling my opinion will not sway from David Tennant though.

Is it just me, or did her overbite get seriously worse? She seemed to have an incredible speech impediment when she came back didn't she?

Hmm so that would imply he did use one up then...

Still I think Moonhead's right about the regeneration thing too, was watching a Sara Jane Adventure with my son and the Doctor stated he could regenerate more than 300 times...

If I might don my nerd hat for a moment (the feathers set off my eyes): the thing about there only being twelve regenerations allowed is in The Deadly Assassin, and is mostly there to give The Master a reason to try to take over the council of Gallifrey. The (godawful) Five Doctors has that same council offering him a new regeneration cycle if he helps them out with their current problem.
It'd follow from that that with no other time lords about, he can regenerate as much as he wants. (Hell, sucking the energy from the TARDIS' link to the eye of harmony out of Billie Piper when he turned into Tennant would be a pretty tidy explanation of how he got a direct link instead of having a small allotted portion, wouldn't it?)
Of course, the question of how many other regenerations he'd had before becoming William Hartnell is a whole other nerd squabble...

BSB: it isn't just you, no. She seems to have lost the ability to talk clearly while doing that Call Girl series as well. Lip implants?
