Bullying and bad home life have always been present.
When I was in school bullies got what they deserved
they got their ass kicked. Some times several times
but they got the message eventually.

Personal responsibility has to be taught by whatever means.
Life was a lot different 50 years ago you learned respect, honesty,
responsibility and a work ethic and you did it young.
In my opinion children are too sheltered today.
Life isn't a video game when you shoot someone in real life
they diee.

I think it's quite telling that the killer was chased off by a teacher, and then turned himself in to a random passerby. In other words, it really sounds like he had a personal vendetta against particular people and was not dangerous to others. This doesn't sound to me like the Norwegian man who started randomly shooting people at a youth summer camp, killing at least 90 people, none of whom he knew. There is a personal story behind what happened at this Ohio high school. Many people failed this young man. Starting with his family. What he needed was help. And now he is a violent killer. But if he did indeed kill the people who were bullying him (and undoubtedly bullying others), I wonder in his own head, if he thinks he has made the world "a safer place". In the delusional state that he likely was in, he probably thinks he is a hero of sorts for ridding the school of some of the bullies. Perspective is always an interesting thing. Again, not condoning what was done. Only suggesting that there is more to this than simply a violent kid coming into school to harm random kids.

p.s. Jodi Picoult's novel is really quite excellent for anyone who is interested in this issue of school bullying, and violent shootings in high schools.

I just watched some of the live coverage from the shooter's arraignment on local tv. His only family present was the grandfather, who is his legal guardian, and two aunts. It was said that he just "snapped", and is horrified that he did it, very remorseful.

It's still going on, going to to listen....

Back with an update: It was NOT about bullying, or drugs, or guns. The shooter did not know the victims, just fired off 10 rounds at people picked at random. The coroner's report for the first victim is that he died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Best pearls of wisdom from the school superintendent: Talk to your kids. Don't text them, don't Facebook them. Talk to them.

I read that the boy did not know the people whom he shot.

Okay, as the current reports say that he did not know any of his victims, please disregard my prior comments about bullying (but ONLY as applies to this particular case, as I believe bullying is a pervasive problem in the schools). This killer is, as one of my prior comments stated, someone who grew up in a violent household, and was troubled. Just a sad situation all the way around.

I do not have a psychology background, but I know the killer was already in some sort of specialized educational setting (for kids with behavioral issues?) It is not clear to me if one can determine how dangerous someone like this is before they actually kill someone. Obviously, not everyone who grows up in a violent household turns violent themselves. So I'm at a loss to say how we can prevent something like this, other than to say, perhaps guns should not be so easily available. A psychologically unstable person might still try to harm people, but they can do a lot less damage, and likely to fewer people, if they don't have a gun in their hands.

Today is Anti-bullying Day (at least it is here) at our schools. Teachers and parents are encouraged to wear pink. My 14 yr old boy is wearing pink today (we bought the shirt for breast cancer awareness day).

It's okay, even the earlier news reports had linked it to bullying. :) You're right that his home life was unstable. I didn't hear what had happened to his parents, but his grandfather had legal guardianship. On the morning of the shootings, police had surrounded the property where he lived and were doing searches on multiple buildings and homesteads (?). They said it was sort of a family "compound". For what that's worth.

One good thing, the female student who was shot but listed as being in "stable" condition on the day of the shootings was discharged and went home. Only one left in the hospital, but I couldn't find any word on his condition.
