I hope you are right...but we have seen in the past that a change of leadership does little to change their militaristic actions.

Butch

C'mon, Butch. They've only had 3 leaders in their 70 or so year history and one of them hasn't been on the job very long. I'm not optimistic but I AM hopeful that this one might be a bit different.

A lot of things are different though and generally could be positives. Such as he was educated IN ENGLISH in a proressive western school in Switzerland under a pseudonym and had to kind of go along as just one of the wealthy kids.
This usually has a good effect on the east/west politics of asian people in terms of having broader cultural sensitivities. Much the same as when our kids get their education over in asia. Lots go into politics and pacific rim business if they come back to the USfor their adult lives.
This is certainly a better starting point than we've EVER had with NK, that's for sure.

Two countries possessing some level of nuclear capability, both with a history of less than stable leadership. In this fragile situation any dealings with or proposals regarding potential weapons concerns would more intelligently be approached with firmness, but with minimum of provocation, e.g. by persistently changing the rules, especially to new ones that no one else already in the game is required to follow, and threatening material harm, but rather indeed such aforesaid firmness being accompanied by genuine offers of positive inducements that would be of genuine benefit to the counterparty in question.

Two different countries, two different approaches. One has oil, one does not.

If nations could be said to have personalities then North Korea is the paranoid schizophrenic of the group. For that reason I say: Trust... but verify.

kdsub -> RE: Big News....Good News....North Korea Agrees To Nuke Freeze (3/1/2012 2:47:23 PM)

Of course you are assuming he has any power at all... That has been debated about his father let alone the son who could very well be a figurehead for the military.

There is no doubt that if he does have power and control...children have been known to reject the teachings of the father and family...So it is a wait...and hope situation.

I am all for giving it a chance...what real reasonable choice do we have?

Butch

Dictatorships are impossible without the full support of the military  (which means you gotta give them alotta perks).

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea announced plans Friday to blast a satellite into space on the back of a long-range rocket, a provocative move that could jeopardize a weeks-old agreement with the U.S. exchanging food aid for nuclear concessions.

The North agreed to a moratorium on long-range launches as part of the deal with Washington, but it argues that its satellite launches are part of a peaceful space program that is exempt from any international disarmament agreements. The U.S., South Korea and other critics say the rocket technology overlaps with belligerent uses and condemn the satellite program as a disguised way of testing military missiles in defiance of a U.N. ban.

The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh?

Update:

North Korea's rocket is now on the launch pad.

quote:

About two weeks before North Korea unveiled its rocket plan, Washington announced an agreement with the North to provide it with much-needed food aid in exchange for a freeze on nuclear activity, including a moratorium on long-range missile tests. Plans to send food aid, as well as a recently revived project to conduct joint searches for the remains of U.S. military personnel killed during the Korean War, have now been suspended.

I wonder if an 'accident' could be arranged?[8|]

With North Korea have allies with China and Russia, there not a lot the community organizer can do about anything North Korea decides to do or not do, now is there?

I think he is pointing out that North Korea is allied to China and Russia, and that they both have UN veto power and significant military/political/economic power. Therefore our options for dealing with North Korea are restricted. This is why we kept having six-party talks, the US, S Korea, Japan, China, Russia, and N Korea, to give North Korea's allies the chance to pressure the North without those allies feeling that we were pushing them.
At the end of the day, if China were to tell North Korea to cut it out, they would pretty quickly, cause otherwise China would just knock over the entire North Korean army in a matter of days, and put in a new regime. However, as long as the US is worried about Korea, we keep borrowing money from China to pay for our military, which gives China a huge amount of economic power over us...

I just got a cmail from willbeur...he asked if I believe NK will go through with the inspections and called me naive...

Whatever...

It's a good question though. I also wonder if anyone believes that after a new round of US foreign aid they won't resume their nuclear tests and uranium enrichment. Maybe in their secret new underground facility.

Do you think we 'helped' it crash?

TheHeretic -> RE: Big News....Good News....North Korea Agrees To Nuke Freeze (3/26/2014 7:54:34 PM)

So the US sits down with Japan, and South Korea to chat a little about their worrisome neighbor, and Un Boy (who supposedly is now requiring all the young men in his country to wear his hairstyle) fires off a couple ballistic missiles, just to make sure they still work.

Ain't good news for Obama's foreign policy grand?
