Minnesota legislator Mary Franson issued a video message that included the following "funny little clip" from a friend:

quote:

Isn't it ironic that the food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to please not feed the animals, because the animals may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

Really, what are they putting in midwestern water these days?

Any guesses as to her party affiliation?

It didn’t take long for the blogosphere to take notice. By 10 p.m. Friday, Franson tweeted an apology: “For those offended at the video, I deeply apologize. I have asked for the video to be taken down ...”

Her video was removed, but copies remain online.

Attempts to reach Franson by phone or email have been unsuccessful so far, but she Tweeted a few thoughts Saturday morning.

“How do you sleep at night?” she Tweeted back to one critic. “I apologized...so why all the fuss? I want ALL people to be successful. Self dependency is part of plan.”

“No, it's not an endorsement of any type. I have asked to have video removed. Sorry for offending you.”

“I am still waiting for [a critic] to apologize to me for pretty much saying my daughter deserved to be bullied. (She's 13)”
And finally: “Because I have a life, I am getting off the Twitter world and experience real life with my children. Going to aerobics with the kids.”

Franson’s comments followed weeks of hearings and bill proposals in the Legislature, aimed at restricting and reducing public assistance in Minnesota.

The Alliance for a Better Minnesota has launched a petition drive, demanding that Franson make another video – this one, an apology for her last video.

“These sorts of outrageous and mean-spirited comments have no business being spoken by an elected official in Minnesota,” the group’s statement read. “Mary Franson must be held accountable, using the same methods that she used to blast low-income Minnesotans. Join us in demanding that Rep. Mary Franson post a video to the Minnesota House Republican You Tube Channel apologizing for her hurtful and insensitive comments.”

Most of you know I completely disagree with using children in politics. OFF LIMITS!

Beyond that, she got what she deserved. She needs to suck it up instead of whining about how she was treated.

You know, that is why politicians need to hire professional speech writers who actually know what the hell they are doing.

Used to be a time when politicians had better sense than to utter a word without it being fact checked and approved.

I'm not so sure. Today we have cameraphones and youtube. One errant word and it's viral in a few hours. I suspect it's not that today's pols are stupider, as mush as their stupidity is less private.

That could very well be true, DS. I should have said in speeches.

Raiikun -> RE: Food Stamp Recipients = Animals? (3/4/2012 12:39:32 AM)

I don't see how that is any more of a negative comparison than a plethora of other statements that make comparisons to animals when making a point.

"Don't bite the hand that feeds you"
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."

Off the top of my head.

Poorly worded maybe, but that's a major over-reaction over nothing.

Oh please. Do you honestly think anyone cares what an independent says? She has to be a repub or the thread wouldn't be here.

I actually wish you would post inanity by Democrats. I'd rather think ill of all politicians than just one flavor.

Mostly because none of those are actually equating people with animals.

Your Kos link had some extra code so didn't work.

Here is is, complete with links to other sites carrying the now-pulled video: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/03/03/1070507/-Rep-Mary-Franson-compares-food-stamp-recipients-to-animals-and-GOP-pulls-the-video

This comparison of people receiving some form of government assistance (that's almost everybody, but of course they mean the poor, not themselves) to animals is a minor meme on the right. Franson and her anonymous "funny" clip writer join the infamous ranks of Nebraska AG and GOP US Senate candidate Jon Bruning who compared poor people to raccoons eating cockroaches, and South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer who compared them to stray animals that breed too much when fed by children.

I have a feeling there are some instances we're merely unaware of. Hey conservatives, your contempt of your fellow human beings is showing. Didn't you have your hands full calling women whores because they speak out for friends who need contraceptives to avoid losing their ovaries? When did the War on Poverty become the War on Poor People?

Franson followed that by listing several forms of abuse, including verbal --- and no, the irony did not strike her. What was she saying about abuse? Sex abuse is bad, go see what you can do about it. Visit a web site. That's it. Nothing specific she's addressing. No thought of, "Oh right, I'm in the majority in the legislature. I could present a bill to do something useful."

So much for any residual notions the lousy session last year (these are the same people who shut down the state government when the Democratic governor wouldn't give them everything they wanted) and the responsibility of governing would make the GOP more serious this session.

By the way, just to keep facts straight, which Rep. Franson couldn't be bothered to do, the Dept. of Agriculture isn't "pleased" to hand out the greatest amount of food stamps ever. That's a sign of how many people the GOP Great Recession threw into desperate circumstances. The National Park Service is part of Interior, not Agriculture, though that doesn't matter except to indicate someone who works in government doesn't bother with details about it.

S.C. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer Compares Helping Poor to Feeding Stray Animals

South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer, who hopes to succeed fellow Republican Mark Sanford as his state's governor, drew a comparison between government help for poor people and "feeding stray animals" – who, he noted, "breed."

"My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals," Bauer said during a town hall meeting, as the Greenville News reported over the weekend. "You know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better."

As the Greenville News notes, more than half of the students in South Carolina participate in a program that allows them to get their lunch for free, or at a reduced cost.

No more or less than the quote in the OP.

I'm sorry, but I have better things to do with my time than search the internet in order to make someone else look like an asshole. If you honestly believe that everyone on the right is bad and everyone on the left is good, then why would I waste my time trying to show you differently.

Michele Bachmann Says If You Are Unemployed, You Should Starve

November 8, 2011

Yesterday morning during a speech at the Family Research Council in Washington, Michele Bachmann bashed the unemployed in perhaps the most heartless way possible. After vowing to weaken social safety net programs such as Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and unemployment benefits, Bachmann said that if you are currently not working, you should not be eating.

“Our nation needs to stop doing for people what they can and should do for themselves. Self reliance means, if anyone will not work, neither should he eat.”

Bachmann is saying that the unemployed should starve themselves and their families since they are out of work through no fault of their own. She might as well have added that the unemployed shouldn’t be allowed to have clothes or a roof over their head. This statement by Bachmann shows how much the Republican Party loathes the unemployed. They have zero compassion for anyone or anything. Even Jesus fed the needy. These Republicans have no Christian values at all, nor do they have humanity.

No...like I've said on several threads, I'm wondering if a media bias would explain why I only hear about this sort of inanity from Republicans.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Food Stamp Recipients = Animals? (3/4/2012 5:29:13 AM)

I'm starting to believe it *is* just politicians and they all suck, no matter what flavour they are.
This is a tweet I favorited last night; "Hey, assholes. It's possible to support gay marriage, loathe racism AND be a conservative. Ever heard of nuance?"
