Critics call for Mitt Romney to issue a stronger repudiation of Rush Limbaugh’s attack on Georgetown student

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mitt Romney was criticized this morning for not more forcefully denouncing Rush Limbaugh’s comments that a Georgetown law student was a “slut” for advocating for expanded birth control coverage.

Limbaugh’s comments on the radio last week have triggered a firestorm among both conservatives and liberals and prompted an apology from Limbaugh yesterday. Rick Santorum has called Limbaugh’s comment “absurd,” but qualified his criticism, saying Limbaugh was justified because he is an enterainer. Romney’s response has been more tepid.

“I’ll just say this, which is, it’s not the language I would have used,” Romney said on Friday, while signing autographs after an event in Cleveland. “I’m focusing on the issues that I think are significant in the country today, and that’s why I’m here talking about jobs and Ohio.”

Democrats pounced on Romney on Friday. David Axelrod, a top Obama adviser, tweeted just after Romney’s comment, “Wow. Profiles in Courage.” “Now that’s leadership,” Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, tweeted.

The Democrats continued to criticize Romney today on Sunday talk shows.

“The bottom line is that the leading candidate on the Republican side for president couldn’t even bring himself to call Rush Limbaugh’s comments outrageous and call him out and ask him to apologize,” Demmocratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz, a congresswoman from Florida, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“I think the problem is the Republican leaders, Mitt Romney and the other candidates, don’t have the courage to say what they say in quiet, which, they think Rush Limbaugh is a buffoon,” Matthew Dowd, a former top strategist for President George W. Bush, said on ABC News’ “This Week.”

This is a golden opportunity for Romney. He can either show he has the balls for the job and make Rush back down or he can show that he doesn't have the balls for the job.

If he has any political instincts whatsoever (doubtful), he'll use this opportunity to stand tall against the Dems and say something like, "Hey, I already spoke my piece. If the opposition party wants to tell me what THEY would have done, fine. But I'll be damned if I'll say something just because they think I should. I'm my own man."

You call Rush's statement an apology?? All Rush did was use Santorum's word "absurd" and Romney's comment of "...not the language I would have used..." and made a hybrid statement. It wasn't an apology at all. And Rush didn't say anything about having misconstrued what Fluke had testified about--that contraceptives are used quite often as hormone therapy for medical conditions and not just to prevent pregnancy. No, Rush hasn't said anything about her actual testimony. He slandered the young woman and all women in general and I hope Fluke sues him for all he has.

What cracks me up about our two best "get real" men is that they've got this DISNEY-LIKE view of Limbaugh like a)He's 'unscripted' and b) he just says this shit accidentally.

In addition to advertisers pulling out, I'm sure Limbaugh was under severe pressure from the GOP machinery to make a public apology precisely because the GOP didn't want Romney to actually have to come out with a public statement on this issue.

I agree. It's too late.

I disagree, I think that if Romney had grown a big pair and called Rush on the carpet big time he would be showing a thing called leadership.
Super Tuesday balloting starts in about 32 hours. IMO, I think Mitt missed out on an opportunity to separate himself from the crowd and scoop up a shit pile of delegates.

I hate to say this but I have a feeling Republicans by and large can't even process something like this anymore. Sure, you put that point out there loud and clear.... but going around the web. It's like they don't really register the importance of Romney standing up to the guy at all.

You know ... I keep seeing all these posts specific to this issue and there's a lot of guy posts, a fair amount of ladies posting.... But what I find myself wondering is... With regard to women...How does this really feel in their guts... They are way more than half the time time objects of his poison. And NOT JUST on these biggies either... I don't think I have ever heard an episode that've listened to (and I gotta admit... that fat half choking voice usually burns the whole experience out for me in pretty short order)... But even with that, I don't think I have ever gotten through a sitting with that guy's show where I didn't hear at least one shot at women.
I just can't see how a woman can see this as a one time thing at all. And I know I am probably just missing something here but this time, cause of the depth of the insult I just thought I would hear in a very loud way some kind of "enough is enough" chorus. Although the only time a woman ever completely wiped me out emotionally did so without ever raising her voice.
So maybe that's it?
