Anaxagoras -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 8:37:37 AM)

FR

I may get in trouble for saying this but I think some are trying to reverse the wheel here. Women do invest considerably more effort in their appearance than men. I'm not saying there aren't a good number of foppish men out there and that there aren't women who don't invest much in their appearance/clothes but generally speaking women do work a lot harder in this respect, and the fashion industry, the prolific adverts on TV about appearance etc. are aimed at women almost exclusively. BTW I don't think its necessarily a bad thing either... [8D]

Hey Moon, is that you in the centre? [8D]

Moonhead -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 8:40:39 AM)

Nope.

Nope.

The left or the right then? [:D]

Moonhead -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 8:43:32 AM)

Nope, and nope.

Hmmm... it looks like the guy in the centre mixed something unpleasant into the right guy's cup of water judging by his expression...

Moonhead -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 8:55:03 AM)

I think that's white "cider", not water, effendi.

If thats "white" cider then that is a curious tint of yellow in the right individual's cup...

kalikshama -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 9:03:21 AM)

M has more clothes and shoes than I do.

The uniform was not a consideration for me when I joined. I wanted money for school and to travel, and was tired of being a machine operator.

Perhaps less women join the military is because when I google "why do less women join the military" I get results like this:

- Reasons why women should not join the military

- Black Women Are Less Attractive - Topic - Military.com Forums

- Equality? Not for Military Women Petition

- Females in military struggle with higher divorce rate - USATODAY.com

- Should women be in the military? – Juggle.com

I would say men care way more about what they wear than women. Women are much likely to accept something they don't care for but wear it anyway.

Was that post a kind of test, MB - to see how many women there are on CM who are honest enough to step forward and contradict you?

Heck no, I think the CM women would contradict me in a heartbeat if they thought I was wrong. (Of course I'd have to be wrong about something for that to happen. [;)])

kalikshama -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 9:09:46 AM)

Then there's the Mord Sith uniform

More serious General Reply:

I think most women join the military for the same reason most men do:

To serve their country

Okay, now that's established, back to the pretty pictures [;)]

I've only read the OP, but why isn't this in the Humor section?

kalikshama -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 12:10:43 PM)

We could turn it into a serious thread.

I was not prepared for the misogyny, racism, and bigotry I encountered once I reached my first duty station. That and the hierarchal nonsense is why I left after my four years. Also, whoever slotted me into Open Mechanics must have only looked at the tool identification portion of my ASVAB scores and/or had a quota to fill - I was totally bored after two years of being a Munitions Systems Specialist and decided not to re-enlist at that time.

Despite all that, I would do it again, and would recommend it for young women on a case-by-case basis with disclaimers.

hlen5 -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/9/2012 12:13:32 PM)

I have a nephew that I think would benefit greatly by military service, but I don't recommend it. There are waaaaaay too many chickenhawks in Congress.

Come on guys, I'm trying to give folks around here a break from the usual arguments...
