When I joined, I joined because I was bored with school. The uniform was the least of my concerns. I am by no means a clothes horse....not even a pony. I wear jeans and t's pretty much all the time, I do have some "clean up nice" clothes, but in the career I had/have, uniforms are standard issue anyway. I like not having to figure out what the heck I'm going to wear, what's appropriate for what office, etc. And uniforms seriously cut down on laundry.
As far as sexist, yes, it's a very sexist question/assumption, but I've come to realize that most of the stuff certain posters put here is going to be sexist, so I take it with a grain of salt...roll my eyes and move on.
On the topic of women in the military, puh-leeze. The whole front line and women issue is getting old....there is no more front line! When someone sitting on a ship can send a missile 1000 miles away to take out a specific building, all lines are gone. Women have been in combat during every war we've ever had, whether the powers that be want to admit it or not. I think the military is a good opportunity for women, however, on that note, they will still have to deal with the blatant sexism, sexual harassment and chauvanistic attitudes that I dealt with 30 years ago. The military is still one of the last remaining "Boy's club", and it's not going to change in the future, unless or until women start getting positions of better authority, like, oh, say, the Joint Chiefs of Staff. We'll see a woman president first!
