We could turn it into a serious thread.

I was not prepared for the misogyny, racism, and bigotry I encountered once I reached my first duty station. That and the hierarchal nonsense is why I left after my four years. Also, whoever slotted me into Open Mechanics must have only looked at the tool identification portion of my ASVAB scores and/or had a quota to fill - I was totally bored after two years of being a Munitions Systems Specialist and decided not to re-enlist at that time.

Despite all that, I would do it again, and would recommend it for young women on a case-by-case basis with disclaimers.

Yes, I agree that women should not be discouraged from entering the military, even though I'm sure it is still evolving for lack of a better word. So in all seriousness, I do hope the OP is being entirely tongue in cheek with his post.

Kalikshama, I always envisioned you thusly:

OK, I had a thought, and immediately my "sexist warning," went off. Then I figured, "What the heck, the politics boards could use more arguments..." (evil grin).
So here is my thought:
Men will always outnumber women in the military because men don't care what they wear, and find uniforms to be handy since we don't have to worry about matching. Meanwhile women care a lot about choosing outfits, will find a uniform stifling of their creativity and detrimental to their ability to use looks to attract men. Besides, women hate to wear the same outfit as other women.
What do you all think? Am I right or wrong? Also, am I sexist or is this an acceptable question?

You sexist fucking PIG.

I don't think I can even respond to your comment.

I'm revolted.

(I doubt I'll even be able to respond to any future posts).

I'll be over -------------------------> (disgusted).

When I joined, I joined because I was bored with school. The uniform was the least of my concerns. I am by no means a clothes horse....not even a pony. I wear jeans and t's pretty much all the time, I do have some "clean up nice" clothes, but in the career I had/have, uniforms are standard issue anyway. I like not having to figure out what the heck I'm going to wear, what's appropriate for what office, etc. And uniforms seriously cut down on laundry.

As far as sexist, yes, it's a very sexist question/assumption, but I've come to realize that most of the stuff certain posters put here is going to be sexist, so I take it with a grain of salt...roll my eyes and move on.

On the topic of women in the military, puh-leeze. The whole front line and women issue is getting old....there is no more front line! When someone sitting on a ship can send a missile 1000 miles away to take out a specific building, all lines are gone. Women have been in combat during every war we've ever had, whether the powers that be want to admit it or not. I think the military is a good opportunity for women, however, on that note, they will still have to deal with the blatant sexism, sexual harassment and chauvanistic attitudes that I dealt with 30 years ago. The military is still one of the last remaining "Boy's club", and it's not going to change in the future, unless or until women start getting positions of better authority, like, oh, say, the Joint Chiefs of Staff. We'll see a woman president first!

OK, off the soapbox, now.......sowwy.

I hate to disagree with the wanting matching outfits, shoes, gloves, etc - but one of the BEST jobs I ever had (and not because I loved doing it, which I did), was working in the operating room. EVERYONE, male, female, doctor, nurse, wore the same style of scrubs. Throw my hair in a ponytail and pop a cap on it and I'm good to go. I absolutely HATE having to constantly update my closet.

Now, that being said - when I was much younger, premarriage - I had a very hot wardrobe as I worked for the government, and frequently had contact with some very very hot men in uniform. And I wanted to look good.

I think it has more to do with where a woman is in her stage of life. With two busy kids and a neverending taxi service - I don't have time for 4 inch heels and pencil skirts!

Clothes might be a factor for some women. I personally have no desire because of that whole killing or being killed thing that tends to happen.

kitkat105 -> RE: is this a sexist question? (3/11/2012 11:32:13 PM)

There are plenty of professions, aside from the military, that involve wearing a uniform. Doesn't matter whether you work at Safeway or you're a nurse, you have a uniform. Not to mention other professions that dictate a certain type of clothing (eg. business suit).

In Australia, all public & private schools have a uniform. So for me, wearing a uniform is "the norm."

It is possible to be brand loyal but not abide by fashion trends too.
