"Bush Backs Amendment Banning Gay Marriage"
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=2035036

WASHINGTON Jun 2, 2006 (AP)— President Bush will promote a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on Monday, the eve of a scheduled Senate vote on the cause that is dear to his conservative backers.

The amendment would prohibit states from recognizing same-sex marriages. To become law, the proposal would need two-thirds support in the Senate and House, and then be ratified by at least 38 state legislatures.

Does this prove Vice-President Cheney isn't the "puppet master" behind Bush?

Sad thing, though. Let people be people, and mind your own, big brother....

I thought he was done with that issue. /foot stomp!/

Lets suppose you dont want gays to marry; this will require money time and resources. It takes alot to amend the constitution. Equal rights for woman did not pass. Heterosexuals that fear gay marriage IMO are insecure in their own marriage.

Tax money used to spell this out? My church will marry me, but my country will explicitly codify that I am second class?  Seems meanspirited.

If marriage is so sacred- then abolish divorce and annulments. After all- it is a vow for life. The 50% divorce rate has already shadowed the sancitity of marriage. I have a brother, married 3 times....which vows did he mean? His last divorce- real messy. No thank you on that for me.

bush has stated he wants to void any contracts---- this turns to rule of law upside down. If I agree in writing for funeral arrangements, a living will, it can be void?  This would spill over to others as well. HETEROSEXUALs.

I have decided, I forgive bush for choosing to be heterosexual.

I have 9+ inches for him to fccking amend!

Ladies- I am sorry ERA did not pass.

-regards.

there are more important fish to fry than what the hell is going on in peoples' bedrooms and love lives. random celebrities can get married when they're drunk and have it annulled shortly thereafter (i'm thinking of britney spears here, but i don't remember the exact details) yet people who've been together 30 years or more and are truly committed to each other aren't allowed because they're of the same gender. it's sickening. you want to protect the sanctity of marriage? do something about the heterosexual idiots who get married on a whim and care nothing about the meaning of the institution of marriage.

I agree completely. Gays should have the right to marriage and benefits just as anyone else does. Just because someone is homosexual doesn't mean their heart doesn't work, after all....

I am so tired of him.. I mean.. I have tried to be respectful.. because he is the president.  I have not hated him..though he hates myself and some of my closest friends.  I don't know why he and they can't just leave ppl alone.   With the war in Iraq a mess.. ppl in our own country hungry and homeless..crime running rampant.. unemployment is insane.. Iran getting ready to nuke everyone.....etc.. you would think he would be more concerned with those things.. than who someone loves.  Oh.. that's right.. I forgot.. dumbass me.. all of that is caused by gay ppl anyway.. duh.

Hi ticia *smiles*.... I want to say, respectfully, that Bush doesn't "hate" you or your friends, or so I believe. He's a fairly decent person with some backward ideas on some things, is all. And I think if you do some looking, you'll find crime and unemployment aren't at too bad a level; of course, if you can't find a job or are the victim of a crime, statistics won't do much to make you feel better.

As for Iran and their nuclear program.... there's some folks (even some here at CM) that think they have the right to develop nuclear technology. After all, Iran doesn't meddle in others affairs.... and their leaders firmly believe in peace at all costs..... don't they?.....

But yeah. Love is one of life's most valued possessions, and I don't care who has it, gay or straight. Maybe the rest of the world will catch up with our way of thinking one day soon.

i agree with You, Chaingang.  However, Bush was proposing an amendment to the US Constitution, not a federal law.  That means, if adopted, there'd be alot of fallout as gays, lesbians and others would lose hard won battles for employment rights, housing non-discrimination, adoption, etc., etc.  It is a truely evil proposal from a man who will do anything to puff up his approval ratings and has turned to the Religious Right (what an oxymoron that is) for that purpose.

i wish there were legislators with the backbone to begin calling for his impeachment.  i'm not sure on what grounds -- perhaps lying to give himself a reason to begin the Wars in Afganistan and Iraq?  Gawd, Nixon was nearly impeached for much less.

LOL Chaingang, it's at $0.00 and holding, I guess. Being someone on the bottom rung of the economic ladder most of my life, I'm not too well versed in Wall St.

I just can't stand watching you be a Bush apologist of any kind. Why can't people take his actions at face value?

If Bush opposes basic civil rights for gay people - then he's a bigot and acting upon hatred. Do you likewise apologize for people who lynch African-Americans because they're not really engaging in an act of hatred - it's just politics!

Or whatever...

Chaingang, rather than see myself as an "apologist" for anyone, I do my best to find as much truth as I can in the world. "Face value" can sometimes mean only seeing the surface, and not with depth. I've watched George Bush for years, first as our governor, then as president, and it is my honest opinion that he is not a hateful person, much less "evil" as some have said. I respect his wife, and have a difficult time picturing her staying with a hate-monger, and more specifically, Vice-President Cheney has an openly gay daughter, and I have a hard time seeing him be supportive of Bush if he were a hate-monger.

So, why would Bush take such a stand against gay marriage? I suspect it's because of his fundamental religious beliefs telling him that homosexuality is a wrong activity. Therefore, for him to support gay marriage, he would have to turn his back on what is arguably the most important thing in his life.

Again, as I've emphatically stated before, I do not agree with him about this. At all.

As for me "apologizing for people who lynch African-Americans"......I'll let that pass, because you don't know me. I hope anyone with a mind unclouded by hate of Bush, or anyone else, can see that banning gay marriage does not equal hanging a human being by their neck until it snaps.

An apologist.....no. A man with little love for venomous mudslinging....yes. George W. Bush is not the anti-christ, and the left does neither themselves nor anyone else any good by saying so, just as the rabid right did no good by claiming Bill Clinton was the harbinger of doom for America. Precious little in life is so black and white.

The man is the Prez - it sets a bad example. I don't care what his reasons are.

You know level, what is worse, drumming up hatred against those you have nothing against, or actually hating the people you want others to hate. If I am to understand you, Bush nor Cheney hate gays because Cheney's daughter is gay, but they use this hatred to win elections... and I am supposed to admire this man??? That makes him reprehensible ... although it isnt like he lost my support for furthering hatred, he never had it

No, you didn't understand me.

I'm pro-life. Does that mean I hate women that support abortion rights? The answer is no, and that's a fact. Not just my opinion. Looking at that example, I can put myself in Bush's shoes and see how he could oppose a group or activity without hatred.

I don't give a damn if you "admire" him or not, I never even hinted at that. And it's astounding how so many can call someone hateful, and be so hate-filled themselves. There's a word for that.

Bush doesnt hate of like anyone other than money, power and populaity. He was born rich, his daddy gave him power he needs to try to regain some popularity among the religious sheep by appealing to their basest instinct, persecuting others to make themselves feel more "Godly".
