Now the Prius is a great example of growing pains, Ken. During the summer of '06, a hot one around here, I was passing as many as three or four of them a day, broken down on the shoulder of the road, trying to come over the mountains in 100+ degree temperatures. Toyota got that squared away, and with California's policy that allowed owners of the "right" kind of cars, to use the carpool lane when all alone in the car, they are popular here.

Are these just the growing pains of a new technology, or is the electric car doomed to remain a novelty item that simply lacks the capability to reliably provide what a normal household might expect from their car?

Mature all-electric vehicle technology has existed for some time. Unfortunately, the most successful embodiment of the technology to date remains in limited production.

So it's not in anybody's interests to keep it in working order, and they won't give a fuck if it catches fire from being overcharged. That whole "Tragedy Of The Commons" thang, right?

That's a pretty cynical view of government, coming from a liberal. Can we assume you'll be cheerleading from afar for the conservative candidate in my country's upcoming election then?

Given how Republican NASA has been since Kennedy opened his third eye, probably not, no.

Going to the moon we lost a few rockets and a few good......brave men and women.

What cowards our leaders would have been........ if they had let those tragedies stop us from traveling to outer-space?

........Are we going to let a bunch of con-cowards keep us from traveling on earth without having to enrich the Saudi Arabians as a consequence?!

My leadership is trying to do something about that.

Fixed it.

Owner59 -> RE: Electric car growing pains (3/10/2012 11:58:06 AM)

I`m sorry....

You`re right.....I was talking about the moon program but you`re correct.

Thanks.

hlen5 -> RE: Electric car growing pains (3/10/2012 11:59:35 AM)

And you are right that the women lost weren't headed to the moon!

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Electric car growing pains (3/10/2012 12:06:17 PM)

Keeping records is one thing. Reading a manual is another. Besides, with conventional cars, everyone knows what to do to maintain them, it is common knowledge. The only thing you need the manual for is service intervals.
But, I will admit I am only speculating, based on my experience personally with engineer types.

Growing pains. What new product doesn't have a few glitches to work out? The battery discharge issue is a huge one. And I bet no engineer from NASA would lower herself to read a car manual. I am sure they think they know it all.

What's the bet? My littlest brother bought his pick-up from a retiree who worked out there, and you have never seen such complete and detailed maintenance records in your life.

Owner59 -> RE: Electric car growing pains (3/10/2012 12:14:12 PM)

This is more than just bout conservative economic dogma....and their hog-wash "principles".....

It`s about our national security and our economic security......

Consider how much oil we import from the middle east and how much we would save if America`s commuter/grocery getter fleet was electric.

Consider further how cool it would be to put a day`s charge on your car with solar electric panels from your house or property(when possible),further reducing our oil consumption.

It`s not going to fit everyone`s needs but it will still help save oil and over time, will further advance and be perfected and fit more and more people`s needs...especially the need to save money on travel.

Most likely they probably were headed to the moon, but took a wrong turning.

They`re all brave.....jeezz...getting into those shuttles strapped to a rocket......man that`s gotta be stressful.

Just saw and article about the Challenger disaster.I remember watching the launch live on TV.

When it exploded I expected the "chatter" to say so but the guys kept indicating the engines were still excelerating....90%...95%...100%...105% etc then finally.....the chatter was about the explosion.

You're the one who brought partisan dogma into the discussion, Owner59. Now we've managed to get past that, talking about renewable energy options in the past, so why not give it a crack again?

If you must see it through that lense, then would you care to tell us how $7500 tax credits for people wealthy enough to afford $100,000 luxury cars, built in Finland no less, are a good use of taxpayer funds in these difficult times?

The cell phone.

In 1992 when I got my 1st one, only doctors seemed to have them and they were very expensive and pretty simple, feature-wise.

I got out of the military in 1967, my land lord had a phone in his car. It cost him $2000 and $1.00 per minute to use. and $200 per month for the service. It seldom worked and caught fire several times durig the 4 years I lived there.
Now even the homeless have cell phones that work and are cheaper than dirt.

Mike, in some applications, electric vehicles and equipment make tons of sense. Lo' those many years ago when I was a warehouse picker, I rode around all day on an electric pallet jack without every being electrocuted, or going up in smoke.

For my needs and uses, I'd be best off with a midsize, diesel powered, station wagon, but there aren't a lot of options easily available on the market in California.

Peugeot 505 diesel
Mercedes td diesel
They are ubiquitous on the market and typically less than $5k for one in pristine condition.
Fixers are less than a thousand.

No. I don't think we are there yet, and the issues of battery weight and range are going to need a major breakthrough, not some design tweaks.

That's a pretty cynical view of government.

Please acquaint yourself with the meaning of the word cynical. It doesnot mean what you seem to think it means.

Typically it is women who will ask for directions if they do not feel that they know the rout.

I love mine.
It is a five speed manual and gets 42mpg at 65mph. If I drop down to 55 it goes up to 51 mpg. My 505 is everything my 300D wishes it was.
Parts are available in los angeles.

Consider further how cool it would be to put a day`s charge on your car with solar electric panels from your house or property(when possible),further reducing our oil consumption.

People can convert their vehicle to electric with solar panels (actually on the vehicle) now and have been doing that for some time and for not a lot of money if they diy.. few people have the will to do that tho.. And, imo, waiting for the mass producers to come up with something that is actually affordable, well,.. you only get what they are willing to put out there..

I dislike hybrids tho, especially their prices (gasp!). As far as gas vehicles go, the Yaris (or some other low prices toyotas) get really good gas mileage,.. much more than the numbers given by toyota,.. some owners have said they get 40, 45 or more miles/gallon.. at you can by them brand new for about $14-15,000.. drive that for the next 10 or 15+ years, then maybe by the time you sell it the mfrs will have a real and worthwhile electric vehicle on the market..
