If the problem stems from overcharging, you would think they could have built a failsafe. How difficult could it have been? It sounds to me like someone was earning a bloated salary, then lost touch with reality.

You're the one who brought partisan dogma into the discussion, Owner59. Now we've managed to get past that, talking about renewable energy options in the past, so why not give it a crack again?

If you must see it through that lense, then would you care to tell us how $7500 tax credits for people wealthy enough to afford $100,000 luxury cars, built in Finland no less, are a good use of taxpayer funds in these difficult times?

Meh... I`m saying saving oil and not giving money to the House of Saud trumps con-dogma about the role of government in business.

We could be the world`s leader in renewable/cleaner technologies and kick ass and be more competitive in the world markets or wait till the Chinese communists develop them and then buy the goods from them.

ummmmm... you're a little late.. they are producing electric vehicles and have a big push on that and have had for a while now..

"China plans to make a million electric vehicles a year by 2015"
"China's long-term target is for 100 million new cars and buses to be produced each year by 2020, it says."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/feb/18/electric-cars-energyefficiency

"The U.S. has invested $2.4 billion in EV development, $54 million for tax credits on alternative refueling stations (like EV charge spots), and $100 million on a five-city EV infrastructure program--a pittance compared to China's $15 billion investment in electric vehicle expansion."

Meh... I`m saying saving oil and not giving money to the House of Saud trumps con-dogma about the role of government in business.

Now if you want to be concerned about that, Owner59, then you are going in completely the wrong direction. Want to stop pouring cash into the House of Saud? Then don't conserve gas. Burn it. Buy a 1-ton, gas powered, dually pick-up, and do jackrabbit starts from every light. Drive around with the windows down, and the a/c on full blast.

The sooner their fucking oil is completely gone, the sooner they stop mattering. Conservation, making every drop last, only prolongs their power.

And finding an alternative to oil ends the House of Saud's influence right now. A laudable goal

Um...that would be giving them money.

I think he means they have enough money already.

It doesnt really matter,.. the Saudis are not stupid and sitting around twiddling their thumbs as their oil is disappearing,.. going,.. going.... they are using all that $$$ and investing it in businesses, real estate, etc in other countries and gonna suck money from the US & world that way too.. and btw, they have invested in a Canadian who is working on solar paint which will be sold to the world and more $$$ in their pocket.. so forget panels, that will be obsolete in due course..

Imo, the US has been trying to move away from Saudi oil, thats why Canada now provides the US with more oil than the mid-east does.. unfortunately the Saudis already have fat bank accounts, they are investing their money and getting richer even without the $$ they get from oil,.. they have diversified.. When you go rent that apartment in your US city, how do you know that its not owned by a holding company funded by Saudi bucks? or some business you frequent and give your hard earned money to isnt owned by them? So its no longer just petro dollars..

These are 2006 numbers, who knows what it is now:
"Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who claims to abhor bin Laden, seems nevertheless eager to follow his agenda. In an interview with Arab News in May 2002, the prince said that if the Arabs “unite through economic interests,” they would achieve influence over the U.S. decision-makers. Since government sources estimate Saudi holdings in the United States at $400 billion to $800 billion, the matter warrants public attention."

More, I'm sure. Not the point. Like we can't freeze the assets after the revolution anyway.

Want to really see a complete change in that part of the world, and how we must manage our dealings there, regardless of which party is in power? Run them out of oil.

Mike, in some applications, electric vehicles and equipment make tons of sense. Lo' those many years ago when I was a warehouse picker, I rode around all day on an electric pallet jack without every being electrocuted, or going up in smoke.

For my needs and uses, I'd be best off with a midsize, diesel powered, station wagon, but there aren't a lot of options easily available on the market in California.

No. I don't think we are there yet, and the issues of battery weight and range are going to need a major breakthrough, not some design tweaks.

This is the one that should concern you:

GM's moving it's electric R&D to China, more jobs lost to the path of least resistance.

Cling to the past and that's where you'll end up living.
