i don't think it's inappropriate...as others have said, just watching the wording might be a good idea. for example, if i had been in your situation with the woman at the store, i might have avoided saying, "your ass looks really good in those pants," and maybe instead said that the pants were a great style and the cut fit her very well, so you're still actually commenting on the way her body looks in them rather than just the garment itself, but you're not, like, freaking her out.

but yeah, i'm not above saying such things as "your tits are great in that top" to friends and stuff. i just try to avoid making it sound as though i'm hitting on strangers... ;)

I'm the type of person who loves to give sincere compliments/positive input to people...For example...if i walk into a store...and it's noticeably above standard in cleanlinesss...i comment to a clerk to that effect...or...if  someones outfit is  very flattering... servicefood/cleanliness  in restaurants...etc.
I was in a convieniance store/gas station yesterday and there was a woman standing near me  wearing some cropped pants that made her rear end look absolutely flawless...i was dying to tell her so but didn't want to freak her out.....are such compliments inappropriate?  Is there a standard...ie...it's ok for women to compliment other  women in such way but not aceptable  for a man to do so, or, appropriate  to compliment ones friends in such ways...but not strangers?

Bless you for your random acts of kindness.  However, if someone --especially a  woman -- told me my ass looked great i'd be creeped out and offended.  After all, you wouldn't say "great boobs!" now would you?

Would those cropped pants look as good on any another ass -  as any other pants would look on this woman's ass?

It always amazes me how some of the most drop dead gorgeous women (yes, I mean you Tikkiee) have body issues.  I know it's normal, but if you could look at yourself through our eyes you'd know you have no reason to have them.

And I thank you for the lovely compliment [:)] However , my issues stem more from others believing that simply because I am a women, who looks like I do; that I must have 'slept my way or used said attributes' to get where I am today. It becomes very bothersome. [:@]

Ah.  That makes a lot more sense.

And you are very welcome.  [:)]

After taking a few orientation courses on conduct in the work force, it's considererd innappropriate to compliment anyone on there looks and style. It's been known to cause to many problems with harrasment. Any how, by not giving compliments, you also protect yourself. For what one thinks is mere small talk and flattery, the other may take it a complete 180 angle taking it as something serious.

Friends are friends but when it comes to strangers and work associates, it's best to keep moving on. I tell a stranger, "WOW, that's a cool shirt, I'd like to know where you bought it." A reply comes back as "Thanks for liking my shirt, let's grab a drink and you can tell me what else you like," "Well, I'd rather you just told me where you bought the shirt." "Oh, you just want the shirt. Well FUCK YOU! How dare you screw with me like that" Person with the cool shirt just walks off crying.

See how screwed up things are today and how they can get worse by giving a compliment? I keep most compliments to just my friends who know me. There's less miss communication that way.

Well generally in public at least it just isn't a good thing to complement a woman my saying: "Jeesl darling I just love yer titts", or to say "Nice tits" when you meet a lady for the first time... These things are better said in private and probably after youv'e been romping naked on the bed a couple of times.....

Seriously though, it is not a good idea to than a woman after sex. It appears that she will think you are treating her like a whore (unless you have paid her in advance).

If you were in some bar-type place, private party etc, where people are flirting and hitting on one another, it may not seem so out of line to compliment someone on having a great ass.  But with a stranger?   In a store?   Telling them they have a nice ass??  Completey out of line and perhaps even borderlining on today's definition of sexual harassment.

In this PC world of ours where everything is questioned about appropriateness..I say damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead..give the sincerely meant compliment..I would weary if I constantly had to analyze every act and word..maybe someday we can stop this micromanaging PC nonsense and go back to being adults....be well..Tempting

I think compliments are always a good thing if done earnestly and with sincerity and in a context appropriate to the environment.

I was at a party once where there was this very leggy blonde.  The greatest pair of legs i have ever seen.  All night i debated on saying something to her.  Finally as i was about to leave, i went up to her and said "I just have to let you know, you have the most fabulous legs i have ever seen"....of course i left out the part "and they would look great wrapped around my face" [:D]

How did she react to the compliment?

Well said, Tempting. Life is damn short, and I wish people would get their panties out of a knot sometimes....(unless I used them to tie them up)

I couldn't agree more! I hate the fact that I have to worry about everything I say being taken in the wrong context. Unfortunately the male of our species have it worse when it comes to that.

I for one appreciate nice comments on how I look and even some "innapropriate" comments made by friends [:D]

I personally don't understand compliments myself as I never for whatever reason see myself as I am complimented .. recently women have said I look sexxy . I don't see myself as sexxy, or well built . but I guess it's the eyes beholding thing again ... I give compliments myself as I see fit ... if I think a women looks hot in an outfit . I'll tell her ..... whats the worse that can happen I get slapped ..... pffffttt like that hasn't happened before [8D] .... I guess it's all in the approach to the compliment . if you told the women those pants are absolutely gorgeous she would prolly have smiled and told you where you could get a pair . if you told her that her ass looked hot as hell in them she might got upset . or she mighta asked you over for afternoon fun lol .... in any event . compliments should be given where deserved . just careful how you approach the compliment. thats just my opinion

meatcleaver -> RE: is it ever innappropriate to compliment someone... (6/6/2006 1:09:49 PM)

I never compliment anyone because it would be invariably taken as a come on. It's a pity that is how the world is but people seem to like to take offence and perceive to be a victim nowadays. Best to keep yourself to yourself. Sad.

Actually I have complimented people where I know the situation is such that there can be no mistake that what I say can be taken inappropriately.

gooddogbenji -> RE: is it ever innappropriate to compliment someone... (6/6/2006 1:38:52 PM)

My friends and I actually played  game once, called...  ummmmm...  I have no idea.

The object was to go around telling every girl you see her best feature.  We were 17 and drunk.  They all had great tits or asses.

Anyway, one of us would just wander up to this girl in broad daylight, Tuesday, 3 PM, outside a bakery, and say, "Hey, I just noticed you from across the street, and you have a great ass." Then wander off without waiting for a reply.  No turning around, no matter what they said.

Most of them managed to splutter out a "Thanks" by the time we were all halfway around the block.  But passing them later on the street was invariably interesting - we saw everything from sheer embarassment to "Oh my god I want to kill him."

Good times.

Yours,

benji

kinkme -> RE: is it ever innappropriate to compliment someone... (6/6/2006 1:49:01 PM)

Inappropriate to compliment, yes I think it can be sometimes.  For example, compliment one person in a group and not the others could be insensitive.  What to compliment could also be inappropriate.  If someone'e ass looks good in pants, I wouldn't say you're ass looks great in those pants.  Learning that is a matter of survival for guys.  I would say I like your pants and leave it at that so there cannot really be any implied sexual inuendo that is often automatically assumed..  A lady could follow that up with a where did you get them from statement.  I also don't think if's appropriate to compliment someone who you already know wouldn't like it, like a really shy person where such a compliment may draw the attention of a large group.  They may not like that and such a compliment may cause them social anxiety.  It would be more appropriate to privately compliment them.

But anyways, yea I think compliments are great and there should be more of them.   All some  people seem to do is bitch and moan.
