AWESOME!

sblady -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/3/2012 4:48:12 PM)

I just finished reading the 1st book in the series and it was....eh. It provides a general glimpse of D/s but is a bit too romantic.

mandmlv -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/4/2012 7:53:31 AM)

The book seems to have become the 'Guilty Pleasure' of women who have not shown the slightest tendency to submit in any way. I wonder why?

littlewonder -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/4/2012 8:01:25 AM)

I'm going to assume the same women like harlequin romances, meaning, it's a fantasy in their heads of what they're not getting in the real world.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/4/2012 8:50:01 AM)

Apparently, a large part of the first book takes place in the town where I live. The Chamber of Commerce types are all atwitter.

chatterbox24 -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/4/2012 12:17:28 PM)

I just read the first book, gotta get the others. If It didnt have an uncanny parallel path with some of my own experience, probably wouldnt find it so interesting.

FOr some reason reminds me of the movie "As good at it Gets" with Jack Nicholson. Where someone tries to change for love.

He was 50 shades of fucked up too, but a woman makes him want to change. And she wants to adjust too.

Does that shit ever work? Not sure, but willing to find out...lol. Nothing like passion possession obsession in the 10th degree. [:D]

OsideGirl -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/6/2012 2:12:54 PM)

Ironic that your life would follow the same path as badly written Twihard Fan Fiction.

chatterbox24 -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/6/2012 2:17:42 PM)

Yes as Ironic as your past life as a "flying monkey" in the wizard of Oz. The resemblance is uncanny, creepy even.

mandmlv -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/6/2012 2:45:19 PM)

OK People, let's be nice!

I am amazed at what a life this thread has enjoyed.

cloudboy -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/6/2012 5:09:30 PM)

Here is a little additional info. I went into Barnes & Noble today, and 50 copies of the book were prominently displayed at the front entrance, an indicator that right now its the hot book on the shelves.

I read the cover and the first three pages, and it strikes me absolutely as a romance novel. The guy in question is loaded, he's the head of some corporation with a large office featuring leather furniture and hot, blonde assistants running around. She is a recent graduate, introverted, somewhat sheltered but otherwise innocent, over-educated, and beautiful but insecure. It seemed to be a book of stereotypes, escapism, and adventure.

In terms of tone and writing, one thing that struck me was how in the first sentence the main character is upset about her hair.

As for another slant on the book, see below:

The book was recently refused for purchase in Harford County MD, and here is the viewpoint of that system's head librarian:

Harford County Library did not censor 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

June 6, 2012

Regarding your recent editorial on the Harford County Public Library's decision not to purchase the book "Fifty Shades of Grey," the library did not ban the book as you claimed ("Banned in Bel Air," June 2). We strongly oppose censorship of any type and are ardent supporters of intellectual freedom — a critical and essential role for a public library in any community.

The Harford County Public Library does not purchase every book that is published, and it follows our library board of trustees' materials selection policy. This policy details the criteria to be used in making purchasing decisions.

The library uses professional book reviews to support the decision to purchase a book, as well as when not to purchase. Each library system has its own board-approved selection policy.

The decision to not purchase "Fifty Shades of Grey" was made after careful review and research following our materials selection process. The professional reviews characterized the content of the book as pornography. Since the Harford County Public Library does not purchase pornography, we did not buy the printed edition of the book.

However, the Harford County Public Library does participate in the statewide library eBook consortium, and the title is available to our customers in eBook format. Maryland public library systems rotate selecting titles to add to the eBook collection based on their own board-approved policies.

In addition, the book is available in print through the statewide reciprocal borrowing program, and customers may place a request through the Harford County Public Library website using their library card. However, not all public libraries in Maryland own the print edition of the book.

The decision to not purchase "Fifty Shades of Grey" was a result of our selection policy, not censorship. It would have been censorship if the library had declined to purchase the book even though it met our selection policy, but that was not the case here.

Harford County Public Library fully supports the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and its values of intellectual freedom and access to information.

Mary Hastler

The writer is director of the Harford County Public Library.

Here in Plymouth County, MA, our standards for pornography are different. We have 70 copies and I'm 1,258 on the wait list - the biggest wait list I've seen [:D]

cloudboy -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/7/2012 1:30:55 PM)

The author just hit the jackpot with her series of books.

xXsoumisXx -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/8/2012 12:00:37 AM)

I've been watching this thread.. i usually don't read books that get so much hype..just because they are the Newest and Greatest Thing. I tend to avoid such books. But then, i found out they were about BDSM (lol) and had to read, just so I'd know wtf everyone was talking about.

They are terribly written. even for a "romance" novel. Yes, some really are pretty good.. and make for great escapism.

These books, not so much.

People will still think wiitwd is bad, wrong.. and if you like it, you are some how damaged.

Christian likes what he likes because of his childhood issues.. and some of it she like as well..but only on her terms.

I don't feel damaged in that way.

I think they will harm outsider's perceptions of us all.

E.L.James selling one book a second, selling a lot of graphic sex, movie rights sold for US$45 million, yes the author has hit the jackpot.

amaidiamond -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/8/2012 10:51:30 AM)

Just started reading it...

It's cute vanilla romance with a bit of an edge from what I can see...

Mills and Boon style -

Think for me it will be used to kill an hour or two when I don't want to get absorbed in a book I can't put down

mons -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/8/2012 7:05:37 PM)

Meltz

Moonlightmaddnes -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/18/2012 11:02:25 PM)

Ok I caved and bought it. Halfway through the first book and it is ok. A vanilla friend was telling me it was the best book ever. I almost outed myself and suggested some others she might want to try.

Anyways besides being tired of the guy being impossibly rich and ' fucked up 50 ways' it is ok. The he is so messed up and that is why he does this is getting annoying. My husband and myself are very normal people who many would never guess what we enjoy doing. I dont ever plan on telling any of them since I have always felt what we do in our bedroom is no one elses business.

SexyThoughts -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/19/2012 4:12:28 AM)

Ok it's a cheap shot, but still....

"Grey, which has smashed paperback sales records, is simultaneously more extreme than men’s own sexual fantasies and requires the user to hold it with both hands....."

Darknight2 -> RE: 50 Shades of Grey (6/19/2012 1:13:23 PM)

It's completely unrealistic. I mean, how many Seattle tech entrepreneurs do you know that even own a tie, much less enough of them to totally immobilize a grown woman! [:D]
