You guys aren't going back far enough.  "Cool beans" and "tubular" were "Far Out" and "Groovy"!
Still not far back enough.... prior to groovy was "neato"

And farther back there was peachy keen

really old biker slang that you hardly ever hear anymore;
Cage, it means a car
Citizen, means anyone not cool or not a biker
Hardbelly, means a young honey
Greybeard, means an older biker

All in current usage.  Though, in San Antonio, not many of the bikers nor their girlfriends have 'hard bellys'

Lol, maybe around the hardcore and oldtimers but i said cage in front of a weekend warrior and had to spend five minutes explaing it. Ah, sadly i am no longer a hardbelly myself, damn gravity anyway.

If you want to reach back for slang that spread widely due to TV, you've gotta go back to Maynard G Krebs ... and before that you have to get back to jazz ... and folks like Der Bingle, Hoagy Carmichael & that crowd.  Any old jazz is full of old slang.  Spiffy, eh?

And ... how many of you what a "jefferson airplane" is?  (Not the band ... although I do have the band's 1st record ... before Gracie joined 'em)

Just call me OLD Daddy :-)

My secretary said "Gag me" once, and I was like, Oh shit, is she submissive?

Totally Righteous...

What I remember most fondly is the fact that two people can hold an entire conversation with the word 'Dude'....

<<<<< Still uses "Cool beans."

And I believe it's a lot older than I am.  1940s slang, I think.
