quote:

The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.

In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters.

Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

It really baffles me why anyone would want to live in NYC, or San Francisco... All the local government want's to do is control every aspect of your lives.

That's okay Rob,New York isn't for anyone.
Hell some folks that come there get chewed up rather quickly...perhaps it's a good thing you are so baffled

There are Republican progressives. They don't get very far, nationally but it happens.

By the same token, you get the occasional democrat that isn't very progressive. George Wallace standing on the school steps, barring black children from entering? It happens on both sides of the fence.

In NYC, particularly, the populace is sooooo Democratic that no one that's considered a "true Republican" would ever win election there. It's one of the reasons why people cast an eye toward NYC mayors for presidential runs.

By contrast, Mayor Koch won two elections while appearing on three (or four) tickets and two of them were "Republican" and "Democrat".

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Please lets not let the fact that George Wallace blocking the steps of a school took place in the early 60's....lol

Any program that gets government dollars has to start enforcing these new codes.
It is going to cause us to raise meal prices 50 cents next year. We have had 10 cents in increases in 10 years.
I think that Mrs. Obama, rather than helping those in need, has shot them in the foot. Or the gut.

I don't know that First Lady Obama had a say in this. It is quite inconsequential anyway.

As soon as I saw this article, I immediately said, "unintended consequences." How is it that Government at pretty much any level can't get UC's into their heads?

Something like that happened here, the NAPI irrigation project grows potatoes for Lays, and they used to give away the rejects to shelters and poor people - the local grocery stores filed an injunction and made them stop.

The NYC thing probably means soup kitchens will have to purchase their ingredients form Grocery chains instead of taking seconds from the growers.

If agribusiness could find a way to keep you from growing your own food in a garden, they would.

It's probably The Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) which was intended to address the incidences of Salmonella poisoning that were happening at the time, mostly produce from Mexico.

And (of course) that the neocon contingent on here are keen to assert that Wallace is a fine example of Democrat/Liberal racism and elitism...
(If they're saddling you guys with Wallace, they'll just have to accept that they're stuck with Bloomberg whatever he calls himself, in any case.)

Ohhhhhhhhhhh ... A page taken straight out of the Rudy Giuliani playbook... There your "progressive" he implemented a strict policy of using police and other various agencies to drive the homeless out of town. Of course more went underground and were separated from mental health services and food they so badly needed. Yeah, that was mighty progressive of Rudy.

Because Republicans hate the future and think the entire country can be run based on a "company store" mentality.
