Anyhow, the day after I visited the flylady website, I followed the instructions on how to shine my kitchen sink. Not clean it, mind you, shine it. Not only did the method work, it was easier than anything I had tried in the past to get paint stains out of the sink...they are gone now. It is time consuming, but for most of that time, the sink is soaking in bleach water...you get to sit and watch tv or read or whatever in that time.

And though flylady cautions not to do too much (the first day, all that is supposed to be done is the sink shine) I don't follow directions very well. When I was done with the sink, it was so clean and shiny I just had to de-clutter the counter tops, then start to work on the stove.

I struggle with disorganization too. I'm currently not allowed to work or drive (no green card yet and drivers license is suspended) so I'm literally trapped in the house all day.
Despite that, I find that exactly by having too much time to sit around and do nothing, it's harder for me to get things done in a timely fashion. I always feel like I've got all day to do something, so I don't have to do it right now which in the end results in me just putting it off forever.

Flylady is what got me to build my positive habits, and has taught me to get my house under control in the last couple of months. It's routine enough now that I don't need to follow her schedule strictly anymore. I'm capable of just going on my own and keeping my own plan. But whenever I feel myself slipping, her plan is immediately what I turn to again.
I still use timers to time how long I'm cleaning versus relaxing, though I now push cleaning time out to at least 30 minute stretches and the last thing I do at night is still shine my sink.

Stick with her, and you'll find that housework truly becomes such a routine you can get it done in half the time between doing other things, and without even thinking about it.

Said household...is part of TFTB's parent's property, BTW.

And I do not think i t unreasonable that an adult throw away their own trash.

I don't think it's unreasonable for anybody to throw away their own trash. I have a 3 and a 5 year old and even they are expected to throw away their own trash (and spend 15 minutes a day doing a chore to build good habits for when they get older).

However, with him begin the only one working, I do feel it's unreasonable for him to be expected to do anything at all by HER, unless and until she can match at least some of his efforts.
He should pick up his own trash for himself right now, but as long as she lets the household spin out of control to the point where he has to come home to a pigsty after already having spend an entire day at work while she sat on her ass, she has no right to demand of him that he pick it up.

What is happening right now is that she does nothing, he works, he comes home tired to a mess, and doesn't see the point in putting in extra work to do anything when he's already worked and she has already done nothing.
So he leaves a mess, which she then uses as an excuse for why everything is a mess, and as an additional excuse as to why it's not her fault things aren't clean.

She's encouraging him to not care about picking up after himself by not putting in the effort he is putting in, and then blaming him as being the reason why she's not putting in as much time as he's putting in.

Bottom line is that as long as she keeps using him as an excuse to sit on her ass, nothing is going to change. SHE needs to take responsibility for HER effort and make sure that she doesn't bitch at him to do anything at all until she feels she's put in an equal amount of effort as he has. AFTER that, if she's still making a mess, she has every right to complain to him. But at that point it will be a legitimate complain, instead of just another excuse for her to not have to do anything.

I'm not at all suggesting that she should become his maid and should clean up after him on the most elementary things.
But I am of the opinion that as long as she can't look herself in the mirror and say she's made an honest day's effort towards her equal half of the total "workload" of their relationship, every gripe she expresses towards his effort will be more destructive for both of them than it will do any good.

If she needs him to be a better man, she needs to make sure she stands solid enough in her own shoes that she legitimately has the right to expect him to be a better man, because she is actually being a better woman.
Bitching at him when she doesn't have her own act together isn't going to change him at all...

Agreeing with that, Ishtarr. But this is a much bigger mess than you know, if you haven't been following the Saga.

He doesn't, but if he chose to do so I'd actually not bitch at him at all. I would, however, expect him to let me know he spilled something so I could clean it up before the stain set.

My "8 hour" rule does apply in this house and it's something I seriously try to live by.
He works hard to bring in 6 figures, a 10+ hour workday is pretty much standard for him

I'm not wanting for anything, and I'm home all day.
I feel obligated to meet the effort he's putting towards our household and relationship by putting in equal time and effort.

This mean that until I've worked at least 8 hours on housework in a day, I literally don't expect him to lift a finger around the house. Hell, I'll bring him his coffee and make his sandwiches for him if that's what he'd want (he works from home).

Now he does sometimes help out around here, especially if things get overwhelming due to the kids, and I ask him to do small things that don't take effort from him but help me out (like collect his empty hangers all on the same bar so I don't have the fish them out of his clothes when doing laundry) but the bottom line is that as long as I have nothing else to do with my time, and as long as he provides for me, he doesn't have to do any housework he doesn't want to do... including cleaning up spills of picking up after himself.

On the sink shine... All I do is on the end of the day, when my sink has been cleaned and scrubbed out with soap, is to rinse is and then run a dry dishrag through it to dry it. It makes sure it looks shined, there aren't water stains in the morning, and keeps it easier to clean long term (you don't get any build up of hard water ever).
After the first time you really "shined" your sink, it shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes everyday to scrub it down, rinse it, and shine it. I've gotten so used to it, and it's usually so clean already (despite a 2 hour cook and bake session half the time) that it takes me less than a minute to go from a dirty to a "shined" sink.

But.....can you be a whore...'cause, with some exceptions (Mother's day and all that kind of thing), I'm looking for something rather specific.

I told my dad about the theory that if your sink is clean and nice, that the rest of the kitchen will get jealous and want to follow suit in being shiny, and he commented it's just like our little turkeys who get jealous when one is being petted, so they, the jealous ones, walk up to you and ask to be petted too.

I have the impression that you both are slobs, but the clutter and hording is because of you.

This may sound harsh, but stop whining about it. Get off your butt and get it done.

Ya know my mom is a hoarder. She's not so bad these days only because she doesn't have the money to buy things anymore and she now lives with someone else who isn't as bad as she is so he kinda keeps her in line. But before that, the only way that the hoard ever got smaller when we kids would come home to see her and one of us would keep her busy while the rest of us cleaned out her rooms and threw stuff out. Ya know what? She never even knew stuff was gone or at least never would say anything to us. Every once in awhile though she would ask us if we had seen something she was looking for and we'd all say "no...haven't seen it" and offer to loan her something or fix it ourselves for her just so she wouldn't go out and buy or collect new things. Maybe someone needs to come into your home and do that and I'm betting you won't even notice most of it gone.

As for your weight and health issues....again, my mom used to have all of those you mentioned plus she smoked and drank heavily? Know what happened to change that? She landed in the hospital. Scared her to death enough to change her life, lose the weight which fixed her health problems, walks a mile now everyday even at the age of 72, stopped smoking, stopped drinking and started eating healthier. So think about it. Do you want to get healthier that way? By landing in the hospital? If you don't then think of that every single time you decide to eat out again and the next time you grab that bottle of soda or doughnut.

Can't help you on this....someone does my place and I don't pay the bill but, I will tell you a very odd story......

When I was a kid, 30 some odd years back, my Mom and I bought a place together....my first house.....(she helped me...but it was a good gig for her as well). I "owned" the downstairs.....she, the upstairs. (That didn't last long, by the way).......

So, we decided (she decided), since I was a young buck, messy as hell....we'd hire a maid....50/50.

She got the better deal (until, of course, I changed the gig to hiring one of my ex college girl friends)....and one day, Mom was having lunch upstairs (summer day....paper plates and such) and Mom's washing off the paper plates and putting them in the trash....and....she's running around frantically preparing every used plate, glass, fork...for the dishwasher....and putting them in same.

I said....."Uhhhhmmmmmm.....Mom......why are you washing the paper plates? Just crumple them up and.....put them in the garbage"....she said....."You think I'm going to let our maid think that we're pigs?????"

I said....."Well no, I wasn't actually considering that but....Mom let's consider this for a moment....just a thought....we have a Maid.....right?"......"Uh huh" she said.

I said...."Maids clean stuff, and if I've not lost most of my faculties.....that's kind of the whole concept, isn't it?".

"Well, yes....of course JJ" she said

"So why" I said "do we have a Maid Mom if you're doing all the work"....

And I swear she said...."well, to vacuum of course".

Cute story. I think my older sister is the same. When she first was able to afford a maid, she cleaned out all her closets and cupboards and even scrubbed the walls the week before the maid started. And now, well her house is spotless from the day before the maid comes to do the weekly cleaning until about 3 days after--the other days, she'll have dishes in the sink and laundry not put away. But the day before the maid, everything gets cleaned and put away so the maid doesn't think they live like slobs. Me. I can't afford a maid, work 8 hrs a day and still have to clean my house. I'm going to keep up with what I've done this weekend and add a sorting/cleaning of 15 minutes to another troubled spot. I mean I don't have to sit down at the computer almost the moment I walk in the door each evening.

it all started with getting dressed, putting on a small bit of make up and facing the day, and she felt better. it does indeed make you feel more like taking on the day i think, from what i notice, when one has made an effort to prepare to face it.

I tell that to my clients all the time. One of them asked me once why I never wear t shirts to work. Its because I feel sloppy in t shirts and when I feel sloppy, I also begin feeling depressed. 4 years ago, I discovered a part of that "getting up and getting dressed" thing on my own. But I hate shoes and usually only wear them when I'm going out, which is bad because even my podiatrist has told me not to walk around in my bare feet.

I enjoy cleaning. But, I'm a little weird and was raised by a SAHM who was a germophobic neat-freak Virgo.

Then again, my cleaning is appreciated by my Sir. I feel guilty leaving dishes overnight.

Everyone has offered good advice. If it were me, I couldn't be with someone who behaves that way. Supremely disrespectful to not care about the person who has to clean or your "home."

Here's whatcha do, op. save up yer cans n bottles till ya have enough for some methamphetamine. Buy some cleaning products and toothbrushes, put on some high energy music ( James Brown is good ) roll up you sleeves, and get to cleaning. Your place will be spotless before you drop, um, stop. Just take care not to scrub the digits off the knobs on the stove.

Added bonus, you will lose a few pounds and save money you would have spent on fast food n candy.

For half of the past 10 years I've shared a kitchen with people with whom I was not in a relationship so scrupulously cleaned up after myself and now that the kitchen is 100% mine I've been gleefully leaving dishes in the sink but that must stop.

Pushing away from the computer now to go clean the kitchen.

ok, I've done last night's dishes, shined the kitchen sink, including using a toothbrush on the fixtures, which made the bathroom sink jealous, so I did that too, swept all the floors, served M coffee, made by breakfast, and started folding laundry :)

Great feeling of accomplishment!
