kalikshama -> Petition: Tell Prison Fellowship: "Stand Your Ground" Is Not a Christian Value (3/29/2012 10:08:11 AM)

You've probably already guessed that the National Rifle Association is responsible for the Florida "stand your ground" law that Travyon Martin's killer is hiding behind to avoid prosecution. But the NRA's secret weapon in promoting "stand your ground" is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a right-wing coalition of state legislators and lobbyists that turned the Florida law into a "model bill" adopted in 24 states.

Here's the worst part: Prison Fellowship, one of the nation's most prominent Christian organizations working on criminal-justice issues, is a key member of the ALEC task force that's pushing "stand your ground" and other inhumane legislation. Prison Fellowship is supposed to be transforming the lives of people affected by the criminal justice system, not lending their support to an extremist organization that promotes gun violence.

Sign our petition and tell Prison Fellowship to immediately withdraw from ALEC and disavow "stand your ground" laws.

The American Legislative Exchange Council is pushing an extremist agenda that victimizes the least of these. Prison Fellowship must immediately end its membership in ALEC and disavow support for "stand your ground" and other inhumane ALEC-backed legislation.

not lending their support to an extremist organization that promotes gun violence.

Characterizing the NRA as an "extremist organization that promotes gun violence" is anti-gun wing-nuttery. The NRA promotes responsible gun ownership.

The law in question states (bold added) ...
776.012 Use of force in defense of person— A person is justified in using force, except deadly force, against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or herself or another against the other’s imminent use of unlawful force. However, a person is justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat if:
      (1) He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony; or
      (2) Under those circumstances permitted pursuant to s. 776.013.
What exactly is objectionable about that?

I don't find their position on gun shows and semi-automatics responsible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Rifle_Association#Criticism

The NRA is criticized by gun control groups such as the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Brady Campaign, Million Mom March, and Americans for Gun Safety. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has criticized the NRA for its "warped conception of popular sovereignty...that citizens need to arm themselves to safeguard political liberties against threats by the government."[45] It went on to add that "if [the NRA members] believe in the right to take up arms to resist government policies they consider oppressive, even when these policies have been adopted by elected officials and subjected to review by an independent judiciary, then they are opposed to constitutional democracy." More specifically, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun violence has stated that, as a result of the NRA's lobbying, gun crime has "soared" and a teenager can "purchase an AK-47 semi-automatic assault rifle at a gun show without having to show ID and without a background check."[46] Jim Kessler, of the Third Way (a pro-gun control group that has incorporated Americans for Gun Safety), has also criticized the NRA for promoting a bill that limited information that was disseminated regarding guns that have been used to commit crimes.[47]

A variety of newspaper editorial boards, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today, disagree with the NRA's policies, such as in September 2004, when the boards called for the extension of the assault weapons ban. Recently, the New York Times has criticized the NRA for promoting politicians that oppose "sensible gun control laws."[48] In addition, the NRA's publications prompted former U.S. President George H. W. Bush to resign his life-long membership[49] after they published an advertisement calling federal agents, specifically those of the ATF, "jack-booted government thugs" out to take away individual gun rights. The NRA later apologized for the letter's language.[49]

This petition belongs in the humor section, because it's a joke

Who gives a flying fuck what the Brady bunch says, we all know it'll be anti gun bullshit.

Characterizing the NRA as an "organization that promotes responsible gun ownership" is laughable on it's face.
The NRA is,and has been for some time, nothing more that a lobbyist group for the Gun manufacturers....they stopped being responsible a long, long time ago.
All they care about is promoting legislation that leads to a bigger bottom line for said manufacturers.....the body count be dammed.

More specifically, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun violence has stated that, as a result of the NRA's lobbying, gun crime has "soared"

Gun crime continues to decrease, despite increase in gun sales

The FBI recently released its Crime in The United States statistics for 2010. Overall, murders in the U.S. have decreased steadily since 2006, dropping from 15,087 to 12,996. Firearms murders — which made up 67 percent of all murders in the U.S. in 2010 — have followed this trend, decreasing by 14 percent.

At the same time that firearms murders were dropping, gun sales were surging. In 2009, FBI background checks for guns increased by 30 percent over the previous year, while firearms sales in large retail outlets increased by almost 40 percent. The number of applications for concealed carry permits jumped across the country as well.

What objectionable to them are guns, period. Makes for holding hand and singing We Are The World a bit difficult, especially when one hand has a .357 magnum in it and the other an AK. [8D]

Just saying.

Speaking of gun manufacturers, seen Sturm Ruger's stock lately? Wonder how many profit motivated anti-gunners own shares?

We're just going to have to agree to disagree about the NRA :)

FYI, I was a Munitions Systems Specialist in the USAF for four years and in addition to my MOS, trained on M-16 and shotgun. Went shooting last year and did quite well with a variety of handguns.

I object to irresponsible people and the laws and organizations that enable them.

On top of that, making it hard for those running for the Republicans that are more moderate in viewpoints but feel firearms should not become so commonplace in the market that they are purchased just like one buys sneakers or a book from Amazon.com. The NRA was a decent organization decades ago, but has since morphed into something completely different. The only ones still fooled by their propaganda bull droppings are the same morons stockpiling guns and ammo (more so now that we have Mr. Obama in office).

If the NRA was as 'true' to individual firearm ownership, why do they get involved only in firearm cases that would help the gun industry's bottomline? That specifically those cases that either allow firearms to be purchased or keep firearms from being ban off the market. The NRA hasnt given a damn about Americans with firearms, only promoted through other vendors the sense of fear of say...Mr. Obama banning the 2nd Amendment (what did that do to the gun industry's sales, boys and girls?). Fear is just one tool in the NRA's arsenal to both keep conservatives 'in line and obedient' and to project anyone that doesnt have a firearm as being non-American.

From a finacial investing standpoint, I would never advise someone to put money into a gun manufacturing company. Not because of my stance on firearms, but because there are so many other investment opportunities that offer better ROI in a shorter amount of time. If the person insists, that's their business. People buy up shares of companies they like. Mostly its to say they have a piece of said company. 'Anti-gunners' as you call them are much more likely to be educated on investing than the 'pro-gunners'. The time they would have spent 'polishing, firing and buying' firearms was spent on learning to invest and examining new opporunities to invest in their future.

disclaimer: I'm not a CPA or CFP. I'm just someone that has a good knack for investing. People talk with their brokers and than come and ask me for advise on money matters. All I am giving them, is an opinion on a question that doesnt have a realistically solid answer. Asking someone "How do I invest and make big profits?" is like asking "What is the cure for cancer...the complete answer".

Oh he was a fine actor.
I just found the spectacle of the man who'd had an album by one of America's outiest gun owners yanked by its record company blathering all this gun lobby stuff a bit feeble.

Guess you have not looked at Sturm Ruger's chart. Here, let me help you.

Not because of my stance on firearms, but because there are so many other investment opportunities that offer better ROI in a shorter amount of time. If the person insists, that's their business. People buy up shares of companies they like. Mostly its to say they have a piece of said company. TOTALLY unsubstantiated. Matter of fact I'd challenge that based solely that pro-gunners are more aware of the facts (a/k/a more educated; see John Lott for details). Or just ask Kirata [8D]

The time they would have spent 'polishing, firing and buying' firearms was spent on learning to invest and examining new opporunities to invest in their future.

Or spending time in forums such as this. /snark Guess reading a good book is out too.

disclaimer: I'm not a CPA or CFP. I'm just someone that has a good knack for investing.

Guess you could do better though, huh!

People talk with their brokers and than come and ask me for advise on money matters. All I am giving them, is an opinion on a question that doesnt have a realistically solid answer. Asking someone "How do I invest and make big profits?" is like asking "What is the cure for cancer...the complete answer".

LMAO... Buffet invests and makes HUGE profits and he does not know the cure for cancer. Care to try again?
