do you want the fan in the window facing blowing out the window, or blowing into the room? What about the fan in the door? I have always heard you need a fan int he window and a fan in the door.

vent the indoor air out one the top floor and bring in the cooler air thru the basement

We're a single story house, with just 2 rooms no basements here:D

ShaharThorne -> RE: When you're trying to move stale air out and bring fresh in, (3/29/2012 1:33:22 PM)

air coming in the window and air going out the door.

Are you using 2 fans?

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: When you're trying to move stale air out and bring fresh in, (3/29/2012 1:49:48 PM)

Is the door and window set up for cross ventilation? If so, one going in and one going out should do it.

If not, both should go out.

Housefan through the attic with windows open in front and back. IF you can afford one. Sucks the air right through the house WHOOSH! Otherwise I usually just put the cyclone fan on a chair at the back door blowing into the house and leave the front windows open a little bit for the *old* air to move out. Works quite well, damn thing is kind of loud though so I can only stand it for so long.
Can't wait until I can afford to get one myself. I have the perfect house for a crossbreeze BUT I have 2 retarded dogs and 2 cats (one retarded and 1 an escape artist) and I live on an extremely busy street so leaving the front door wide open is out of the question. Not that I want to deal with the traffic noises anyway.....too often I can be sitting here trying to work and some asshat decided to roll down my street with his windows wide open and his bass (base?...wtf ever) set to HIGH and rattle the crap out of my front windows. Makes me want to invest in remote controlled landmines.

Specially in the summer! It gets so hot and with no ac and nothing but room fans to stir hot air around.

Even if you only had one fan, put it in the window blowing into the house, fresh spring air is awesome. And if you got two fans, put the other one blowing on you. Enjoy the breeeeeeeeeeeeeze!

I remember my grandmother pointing the fan outside the door in the summer... and it worked, somehow. She used to talk about the old days before we had an air conditioner... yeah, the days when we slept on the floor in front of the open door! HAH.

LadyH a lot of time in the dead of summer you'll see our dogs allayed out flat. Tummies pressed to the ground.

littlecherie -> RE: When you're trying to move stale air out and bring fresh in, (3/30/2012 7:23:09 AM)

CRYPTICLXVI -> RE: When you're trying to move stale air out and bring fresh in, (3/30/2012 9:29:01 AM)

If you want to move the stale air...face the fan outwards. It also works in the summer to cool down the house during the day, pulling the warm air out.

Have dealt with several old houses with no a/c and humid summers... as well as older apartments now, or not wanting to spend the money to run the A/c (AZ...).

to move the stale air out I would recommend that your Sir face outwards when he needs to let one rip!

Thank you for this link ;)
The fans I was looking at were all at least 3x that price plus installation. You have now just saved me some money!
