You're no fun at all, Kirata posted a perfectly good bit of panic inducing bullshit and you have stopped it just like that.

I'm sorry it scared you. I was just asking a question. Apparently your mind went somewhere wild with it.

I apologize. Try to relax.

K.

you post ironically but seem unable to recognise it in others, odd.
Or were you deliberately missing the point....again....

There are 20k ICE employees. it's a 5 year contract. So that's 4500 rounds per ICE employee. I think it's safe to assume all ICE employees are not armed so assume say 7500 rounds/year/agent.

That seems excessive but it is the top end of a contract meant to provide their ammo needs for at least the next 5 years.

People who are frightened by big numbers are a bigger threat to the US than ICE.

Yes, I'd say it seems excessive. Anticipating a possible need for thousands of agents to expend 7500 rounds of ammunition per agent per year suggests a scenario of some seriousness. But perhaps more troubling is the fact that some people are so frightened by anybody asking questions that they need to find some way to cast aspersions on their mental state or motives.

K.

still scared by the big numbers I see. That's sad.

For everyone else, consider this is the maximum number of rounds that can be acquired under this contract and that ammunition can last far longer than 5 years when properly stored and handled so in reality we really could be looking at a contract for 10 years of ammo or longer.

It is always gratifying when someone is kind enough to step up and prove my point.

Thank you very much.

I'm not being childish. The only thing going on here is some people's inability to grasp large numbers.

Big numbers get small:

Dept of Homeland security employes over 220,000 employees. That is just about 2000/rounds per employee. I go through 2000 rounds in a weekend of target practice. 450,000,000 bullets is really not a lot.

And you figure the main purpose of those 220,000 employees is to fire off rounds?

It's hard to imagine you guys are really this dense.

Honestly, do you have any clue what DHS does? You figure there's a line of 220,000 rent-a-soldiers wrapped around the border?

DHS includes:
ICE
Coast Guard
Secret Service
TSA
Border Patrol

That's a lot of armed agents any way you cut it.

Well stef, if you want to ride the big number merry-go-round, you're free to do so.

But if you think that's the only point made in this thread, layers are left untouched.

Actually, its really not a whole lot when you think of how many officers there are across the whole country. I would rather they have too many than not enough. I stock about 20,000 in my safe.

I used to keep 10k on hand.

As long as the big number merry-go-round seems so popular, I just came across a horsie for the ride:

In 2005, it was reported that "operations in Iraq in the past year resulted in the expenditure of 72 million rounds [of all calibers]... Current expenditures in Iraq are reported at 5.5 million rounds per month." The total of all calibers being expended in all hostilies involving the armed forces at that time was estimated to be somewhat under 10 million rounds per month.

Those are rates of expenditure by military forces in combat operations.

10 million per month for both Iraq/Afghanistan/Special forces is quite reasonable. over a 10 year period that would be 1.2 billion rounds or 120 times the DHS contract maximum.

This from somebody who claims to have a degree in mathematics.

10 million per month
10 years = 120 months
10,000,000 * 120 = 1,200,000,000 which is 1.2 billion

Now why don't you learn to do basic math before making claims about anyone else.

Although I do see that the contract wasn't for 10million rounds but 450M which makes it somewhat less than 3 times the rate for the military in the combat zones.

Why don't you learn to read before making claims about someone else needing to learn math.

Because that wasn't a math mistake and was simply me forgetting the title of the thread. and you should keep it in your pathetic little mind that if you start throwing snark around others, including me, are likely to respond in kind.
