SNOW?!?!?

What part of the world do you live in? I cannot get to the other side to snoop.

My sister lives in a beautiful valley just south of the big ski areas of Colorado and got snow yesterday.........but not that amount and with a high in the 60's today, I am sure it's long gone by now.

We are already running the AC here at work....and wishing for rain.

Hey!  Stop with those four letter words on the role call!  Everybody think spring for those of us who are climate challenged!

LPslittleclip -> RE: April Roll Call (4/4/2012 6:56:49 PM)

Getting a lumbar block tomorrow to help with the back pain. I hate taking pain killers just so I can feel normal.

Working on 3 afghans at once, 2 of which are going to Dallas for Project Linus. Mom does not know it yet though but we don't have a chapter here and even though I can probably do the coordinator bit, I don't have the funds and usually gone every 2 to 3 months to Austin.

I mailed EP a baby afghan the other day. It is in Easter pastel colors. I think she will lover it and it can last a while for the baby (I make them a bit overlong).

Getting a tooth yank out on the 12th. I will talk to my dentist and see if he is willing to admit me to the hospital and get the bottom teeth out (Medicare pays that way) so we can get a partial plate going.

As a protest against 'pink slime', Mom and I decided to avoid all hamburger meat and switched to ground turkey. This is perfect for the Hamburger Helpers we just got at Sams Club yesterday. Perfect size tubes too.

I was able to get some new clothes and a couple of S hooks for my crocheting. Now I can do multi-strand afghans with no problem.

SQUEEEE!!!! For LP. Good luck at NE3!

I am counting down to the 17th. Still having fun, but now panic is setting in.[&o]

whats comming up on the 17th Hibbie. I know that thats around where our UM will probably be entering the world as of now so that makes 2 parties counting to that date.

NiceButMeanGirl -> RE: April Roll Call (4/5/2012 5:50:44 PM)

Just a couple things going on in my life these days.

1. My boyfriend is moving out on the 20th to work on some big-time issues and I'm glad he is. Well, really, I didn't give him much choice. [:)]

2. I spent half of the day today in the E.R. when a friend's German shepherd I was holding onto pulled me off my feet and my head hit the concrete. Gawd there was blood all over the place, but I'm fine now. Plus, the E.R. doc was uber hawt!!!

NBMG

SweetDommes -> RE: April Roll Call (4/5/2012 8:36:04 PM)

Ok, boo for thwacking your head, but yay for hot docs!

Glad you're ok.

SweetDommes -> RE: April Roll Call (4/5/2012 11:12:47 PM)

Casey the Sunshine Cat apparently had her kitten yesterday - and decided to bring her into the office (where I am) when the Shih Tzus were in here tonight. Pandi (who tries to steal all the babies) went nuts, and I heard a kitten - first time I've heard it, but this is NOT a newborn.

QueenRah -> RE: April Roll Call (4/6/2012 10:30:16 AM)

Speaking of kittens...Oh, hell. I was perusing my local CL/community/pets section and saw an advert from my local Animal Control. There were four lovely cats on death row because: 1) They'd been dumped for stupid reasons (they had been kittens and for some reason had grown up to be cats and 2) It's the time of year that people like me, who understand the HORROR of pet overpopulation, dread - "kitten season." Breeders should be made to help on "kill day." It might make them reconsider the "joy" of bringing puppies and kittens into the world. When those puppies or kittens become too much for the new "owner" to handle, or boring, or they grow up most people don't contact the original breeder - They dump them. If the animal is lucky, very lucky, s/he might end up in a permanent home. Most are not. They end up suffering and dying on the streets, languishing in a hoarder's menagerie, or at the local shelter, where they end up on the wrong side of a needle. It is awful. Just one litter is one litter too many.

Anyway, early this a.m., I go to the pound to take at least two of those death-row cats - for short-term foster, only! - call my buddy officer there to see if it wasn't too late. Thankfully, they had been rescued, just under the wire. The "Sucker" stamp on my forehead glowed red-hot, anyway...I see a very young mother cat and her kittens. There are sick cats in the same room with her. Death sentence for kittens. Now...I have her and the babes and hope they make it. Anybody need a kitten? (fixed, first, of course!)

HorneyBetty76 -> RE: April Roll Call (4/6/2012 10:42:26 AM)

April I am finally finishing my school project that I've been working on since last summer. Then I am will be in full job hunt mode, writing up several resumes, one for each company I am looking into.
I have just joined CollarMe, I am meeting a few people on here. Both nice and scary, doesn't seem to be a middle ground on here.

One of the reasons that we microchip ours - and we stay in contact with anyone who gets a dog from us (the cats, we keep - we have a serious rodent problem here, and I'm not talking about the ones in cages).

LadyConstanze -> RE: April Roll Call (4/7/2012 1:01:30 AM)

In LA - again, body clock just messed up from crossing the Atlantic repeatedly, heard that one of the doggies at home damaged a ligament and will need extensive surgery... Friend doing better and I'm still not smoking, so at least something positive.

In my experience, ethical breeders in the dog & cat breeding workd either desex/spay the puppy or kitten before going to it's new home or the new owner has to agree to do as apart of the ownership contract.

My Ruby (pedigree Maine Coon) came to be desexed, microchipped, vaccinated & wormed. On top of that I also have a lifelong friendship with her breeder and even though she's retired from breeding/showing cats I know I have her as a support person for Ruby's entire life. I also met Ruby's parents, siblings and half siblings. She was also flown to me. Ruby's breeder was registered with a particular Cat Fancy association, in Australia & the US. I had to go through a phone interview and meet Jann before I got approved to own one of her kittens.

The problem lies with people who are backyard breeders.. who maybe got their cute -oodle and think it'd be a great idea to breed! That their children deserve to see the miracle of birth! Or not realising cats can go into heat as early as 4 months old.
There needs to be mandatory desexing and tighter controls on breeding/breeders registration.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: April Roll Call (4/7/2012 6:54:02 AM)

As a guinea pig fan, yeah... and of course, the bunnies, so many of my friends are into those, and folks think OMG TEH CUTE but they are not throwaway creatures.

With local rescue agencies - Most have a non-shelter pet section for suckers like me, who can't pass by an animal in need. I have had some small amount of good fortune posting on cl. I get a lot of calls from idiots who've dumped previous pets, because they were inconvenient, and now want a "free ki-in." They get the "Perhaps you should try at the Animal Control shelter. They can't afford to be picky."

I'm sorry, I don't mean to fight, but, I must disagree with the term "ethical breeder." If any of them had *ever* spent a day helping murder really good, sweet, perfectly adoptable (and not so adoptable) cats and dogs, because their owners just didn't want them anymore, and there just aren't enough homes for ALL the pet animals in our world (as I have done, because NO ONE ELSE would help the shelter manager, because no one can stand to do it); if they had any heart, at all, they would stop, until no more pets died behind bars.

When you assist in the killing, you cry the whole time. You learn to hate, truly hate, most human beings, because they just don't give a damn, because they just don't commit to their promises, because they think they can dump their responsibilities on someone else. You remember, to the end of your days, ALL those lost, confused souls that you just couldn't help, because you had so many "foster" animals that you ran the risk of becoming a hoarder, yourself. You hold them and speak softly to them and they cry out, when the needle hits and they fight and you hold them until they stop quivering and they become still, forever.

I get that there are those who make sure the pet quality don't breed. But, for every puppy and kitten born, there's an adult dog or cat whose life ends at the pound, because of that "wanted and well-bred" pet. Sorry, ALL breeders should be forced to help on "kill day," even the "ethical" ones.

Sure, the bybs, the "accidental" breeders, the slackers who can't be bothered to fix their pets, and, instead, prioritize neat, new gadgets, computer games and visits to fast food joints, are a big problem. But, it starts at the "ethical" breeder, whose show-circuit colleagues may purchase (No one should ever say "adoption" when there's profit involved) a show-quality animal, that doesn't win points, then they breed, anyway, their clients breed, and so-on, ad nauseum.

If I have no other passion, it is for the welfare of animals. The voiceless. I can't back down from this, because of what I know and what I've done, because no one else would. I love kittens and puppies. But, every time I see one, everytime I see someone gush about the "cute little babies we just had," my stomach lurches...and I remember.
