to the original poster:

The same question could be asked by vanilla people about bdsm. If you can't fathom the relationship you need to investigate the potential for yourself, ask questions (well done), or just shrug your shoulders and keep doing what you do. At best, the online relationship is often satisfies a need for intimate communication and fill the void left by searching for someone who understands. At worst it is exploitation of finances or developing relationships that make people happier. Fantasy is easy, relationships are hard.

Thank you everyone for your opnions, and your honesty.

Thank you Miss Immortal Pain for not makeing it sweet. I like blunt up front often brutal honesty.

I have quite a few friends that I haven't yet had the oppertunity to meet and have lunch or whatever with, so I know that it can work. I guess I am just hazey on the intimate parts of that type of relationship. I guess it just speaks to my abilities and skill set as a Dom, or the quality of the submissives I've come across. Either way I have come a bit closer to understanding which is what I am hopeing for.

You are very welcome and I thank you in return(it's hard sometimes for me to not be harsh about this sort of thing) I don't really want to promote the idea that online only is a great thing, I have seen a lot (A LOT) of people get hurt by it. But I don't want to say it is a bad thing either. I met the livein I now have online, in a yahoo chat room, and he has been here for six years now. I think in the end it really depends on what you are looking for and how willing you are to put in the work it takes to find out what kind a person you are really talking with. And I wish you luck figuring it all out. I have been at this for around 25 years and still don't have it all down yet

And the entire reason I am here right now is... believe it or not... because of online Gor. Of all things.... ~shakes head~ But there you have it. And my wife's wearing a cold steel collar because of it.

(well, actually, we have radiant heat in the house with heaters in each room. So every room has a collar warmer. I'm such a softy)

If I may put in my 2 cents, I never went out looking for a relationship, cyber or otherwise. We just clicked and it happened. Currently it is the only way we *Are* able to be with each other, aside from phones and such, but we do have plans to make things "real". Not that our relationship is not any less real than a physical one. We are just lacking the benefits the physical aspects has to offer right now.

It's easier to keep a cyber relationship a dirty little secret from your spouse.

There are places where wiitwd is against the law or so deeply against the cultural mores that people are shunned. That's reality for some folks. The internet allows for some interaction. When you are starving, you will eat mushrooms right out of the ground, dirt and all.

There's place where anal sex (sodomy) is against the law. You think people in those places are only doing it on the internet? Heck no.

I've done and known quite a few people that do cyber/online/virtual relationships. Some can't/won't do anything like this for many reasons. Either it's a marriage or religious community they're involved with. Maybe they have "clout" and can't live it out in the open. For whatever reason, this "other life" comes into play. Most people "find themselves" like this. I would be as bold as to say 75% (of the males that don't know they are dom/sub) find themselves in BDSM porn. Not for me, though it's fun to watch, yet I personally don't see it as a realistic way to live it. Eventually, if the timing is right or what is agreed upon, you could physically see the other person, but you'd be talking months or years before anything like that took over. This is all just as you would imagine, MHO.

There was a point for me years ago that I could NOT leave my house w/o having a sever anxiety attack. So the idea of "meeting" a stranger wasn't an option. PTSD is a bitch like that.

I meet my daddy/owner on another site. We currently are 6 hours away from one another half of the time simply because of moving costs. So even though we aren't "online" we do use things like emails, ect to communicate with one another.

I also knew a woman on GCN who b/c of her real time situation could not enter into a real time face to face relationship but she had an online m/s relationship with the same man for 7 yrs last time I saw her. Is her relationship any less real than mine or anyone elses who is priveledged enough to have that face to face with their partner or loved one? I dont think so. It's simply different.
