Just a quick Q - something that I may or may not have picked up correctly about North American customs: Is that right that it's traditional for women in Canada and the USA to wear dresses over Easter? Like they always wear hats at weddings here in the UK?

If so - full marks! Hats and dresses on women . . . they do it for me. There. The truth is out.

Nah, it doesn't matter what atheists do, they're going to get called bigots. Just saying "I don't believe in God" is enough to get such personal attacks plus death threats, threats of rape followed by death, threats of death followed by rape and so on.

When you notice that atheists spend more time talking about the majority religion in their country instead of religions that are incredibly uncommon in their country it's generally because they're talking to and being oppressed by people of that majority religion.

Both Ramendan and Pastaover are Pastafarian holidays, you're just not nearly as likely to hear about them as the fun holidays like Zombie Jesus Day and International Talk like a Pirate Day.

I have a different theory.
Perhaps Judaism and Islam, in the US, do not force their holidays on others. Perhaps no one is complaining about the "war on passover," and telling folks who don't care about Islam what Ramadan is truly about? Perhaps if I did choose to celebrate Hanukkah as a non-Jew, no one would tell me I was doing it wrong or that I needed to appreciate the "true meaning." If I want to celebrate a day that a fat jolly guy gives my kids presents, I don't want to hear about YOUR savior. If I want to tell my kids that a rabbit pooped out chocolate eggs for them to find hidden around my house, I don't want to hear about YOUR resurrection, and frankly, given how much I have to hear about how YOUR religion says be mean to Gays, crap all over women, etc. I'm going to be all for people making fun of it.
Meanwhile, the Jews and Muslims seem like really nice folks, especially in comparison to the Xtians trying to shove their beliefs down my throat.
(BTW, "YOUR," above refers to the generic Xtian, not the person quoted, I have no idea if DC is Xtian)

Also BTW, next year at easter Imma gonna tell my 5 and 6 year old that Easter is a wiccan fertility ritual, hence the rabbits and eggs. Hope you Xtians don't get offended if my kids tell your kids the truth...

I have a different theory.

Everybody knows that some vocal Christians (and Muslims, and Jews) can make a royal pain in the ass of themselves (much to the embarrassment of other Christians, Muslims, and Jews I might add). No argument. I know it. I've seen it. And when you run into one of those, you are welcome to be as rude and juvenile as you like. It may not make you look any better than them. But hey, they started it, and I do understand that some people for whom that excuse worked in Kindergarten have never gotten out of the habit.

Ridiculing ALL Christians, Muslims, or Jews, however, is just being a jerk. And my theory is, some people are just jerks.

Don't know why they sent them to me, or why they think I would share their views, but it was people I knew well enough that they had my email.. Also , many Facebook postings on the subject. As for the store lines, I never could figure out why they were talking to me. It happened once at the grocery store, with some baby factory with stringy hair, and once at Kohls when I was buying a really lovely sapphire necklace, and it was taking forever because they were busy. This old Russian lady just would not stop talking to me. I was more polite to her than I was the loser at the grocery store.

I was much more tolerant of Christians before they started acting like the goddamn Taliban, politically. It is far from just a few obnoxious people.

Yeah when they are going to lie about your position and get belligerent no matter what it makes it real hard to give a shit about Christian sensibilities.

Boi, here's the least offensive billboard ever, it was designed to target Atheists (not Christians) simply to let them know that other Atheists existed. What was the result? That's right, hate crimes and death threats.

I get them too sometimes, and they are irritating.

One, I still remember, was about how evil liberals were trying to remove "In God We Trust" from America's money and the House chamber, where it had been engraved for all time. Well, this evil liberal, a former history major, happened to have some time on his hands that day, so I cut and pasted all the emails from all the times the message had been forwarded and sent off a disquisition about the appearance of the phrase.

It didn't, I pointed out, appear on American money till the Civil War, as the result of efforts by Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase. Lincoln, if I recall correctly, rolled his eyes at the idea, but didn't stop Chase, whose financial wizardry he needed.

I also noted that the phrase didn't appear in the House chamber until a renovation in the 1950s and provided a photo of the pre-renovation chamber, sans motto.

It was quite fun in a history-geek sort of way, and several recipients thanked me for the info.

Eisenhower signed the law to place "In God We Trust" on currency in.... BRB .... 1955.  Coins sporadically up until then.

I remember being taught the "Pledge of Alligance" without the phrase "under One God," and then having to re-learn it with the phrase.... I distinctly remember walking home from school one day, thinking "Why can't the US government get something as simple as the Pledge straight?"  Seriously.....
