The hell with it. Just wear a corset.

You can check your local phone book for uniform stores.  They typically have uniforms for all different professions.

For shoes, I would NOT use somewhere like PayLess.  You are entering a field where you will be on your feet a good portion of the day.  You need a comfortable, well made shoe that provides support.  I know people have become fond of those clogs, but they really aren't good for your feet.

For the pants, personally, I would try looking at Kohl's on line.  The sizing is pretty good, and their return policy is fantastic, so you could order a couple of different styles and see what you prefer, and return the rest.  I don't know where in Maryland you are, but there are quite a few stores in the state.

Here is a link with dress pants that look pretty comfortable:

I don't know if there is a Landau near you or not but they have uniforms and lab coats. If not, then I don't know. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

crocs generally have air holes for foot breathing in the top. bad to have holes in your shoes - needle sticks have a better chance of hitting flesh! i got good leather walking shoes when i did my pracs. my feet were very grateful.

Yay for prac! Enjoy it, ask heaps of questions and do as much as you can.

For shoes, I have a pair of Rockports. I have orthotics for my non-existent arches and these shoes have been God sent. I'd recommend a website like endless.com which offers free 2 day shipping + free returns. So you can buy a bunch of appropriate shoes, try them on and return the ones you don't like. Clarks & Ecco are also good.

Make sure you look after your feet because you've only got 2 of them.

As for pants, I would just try somewhere like Walmart or Target. Make sure you can kneel, bend, move around comfortably in them. With how much you'll end up washing & wearing them they don't hold up long.

For a lab coat, if you do a Google search for "scrubs and lab coats" you'll find a lot of websites that offer them. It's just a matter of figuring out what size you are for one.

I have to say it, lizi.  I'm really proud of you.  I'm so excited that you are at the stage of clinicals.

Don't buy the smallest lab coat you can find.  Short does not mean small.  If it's too tight in the shoulders it's going to hinder you a bit.  That's why you order by bust size.

Scrubs.  These days, you can buy them anywhere. When clip graduated, I bought him three sets from Wal-Mart.  They even have cartoon patterns for those who work in pediatrics.

Shoes.  I haven't talked to anybody in the medical field that doesn't swear by crocs.  Better looking than those hideous nursing shoes but the same kind of support for the sole.  And, they LAST.

Big hugs.  You are going to do great!

These shoes are the most comfortable ones in the world to me. I would not work with any other kind.

Thank you to everyone who responded, I'm going to try to get this done by the end of the week. You all have helped immensely to narrow things down- I just didn't have time to chase stuff down or order things and have it not work out. There's a learning curve here as with most things, I felt I had to try to cut this one down as much as possible. In my new field of practice we would call this thread 'trouble shooting and problem solving'! Which I'm very good at. Memorization and regurgitation of facts...not so much. My age plays into that not working as well for me at this stage of the game.

I'll be dropping in to look at the thread, but I might not have time to respond - things have been really tough....I take note cards into the bathroom with me, ugh. We get a whole 5 days between the end of the semester and the start of the summer session, enough to sleep for a day and maybe clean my house and get some groceries. Its just been brutal, but I'm also very excited.

DS, if I go with a corset you'll be the first to get pics

Can't say it enough, thanks all again.

Oh hey...just wanted to add, whatever advice I don't use now I might use later- who knows where I'll end up working, and what they'll want for a uniform at that point. This is just our uniform for while we are students and doing the practicals/clinicals....which will end May 2013. So none of the tips are extraneous at this point!

Ok, i know the op can't wear clogs, but i did want to chime in on these clogs, incase someone else thought oh hey they look comfy.

Daddy has this pair, from this company and they make his feet, and mine sweat something awful, and he has to wear socks with them other wise his feet are swamps, even with socks they still have swamp foot affect. Daddy also found, if you leave them in your car, the intense heat will ruin the shoes, and the lil heel strap thingie breaks super easily. Daddy has had two pair of these, and both pair the strap broke off with in a short period of time.

Once you get your uniform together, would you make a trip to Tennessee for a little medical play with a naughty male patient named Mutt?????

Cherokee is a good scrub brand, however, their scrub pants are a bitch. Meaning, they fall down all the time and show your crack, even if you tie them. And if you try to pull 'em up they look like granny with pants under your boobies. GAWD I'm so glad to be done wearing them!!!
