And you quoting scripture is not...

I guess we are both comics today.

Well again... another difference in opinion. But I think the world will not end and i will not be damned if I form one and express it. Perspective is everything in threads like this. I do believe we are seeing things from different ones and there is no reason to bang heads against a wall to change the others.

Time to move on.

If you can't tell the difference between this and a child then there are several pro-choice positions which will seem pretty confusing to you. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that this is one of them.

If you can't meet the argument head on, by all means resort to ridiculing a straw man. Everybody knows that a blastocyst isn't a "baby". The point being argued is that it is the living early stage of a human life, and as such deserves protection. When does human life begin? I don't pretend to know, but I think it's pretty clear that some people a lot older than a blastocyst still haven't made it there yet.

Atheists know more about scripture than Christians, that's actually how a lot of us ended up as atheists.

I get pretty tired of the glib arrogance and psuedo-intellectual pretenses members of both groups often display.

Sure, Butch, I'll get right on that. I'm sure the infallible Benedict will email me back within hours, saying that, yes, you're reading the very mind of God.

No need the Pedo-Pope has already given his ruling on this one, only Catholics are twue Christians: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-07-10-1587290358_x.htm

No need the Pedo-Pope...

The Church has still dragged its heels over the child abuse issue in recent years but Ratzinger still did far more than any pope, before and after being elected so calling him the "pedo-pope" is a bit excessive...

He has indeed done more than any other Pope that I'm aware of, more to aid pedophiles that is:

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/pope-benedict-fired-growing-sex-abuse-cover-ups/story?id=10200682
http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Pope-Benedict-accused-of-masterminding-Catholic-Church-sex-abuse-cover-up-91038229.html

I'm unable to fathom how anything other than a monster would be able to live with the harm that he's done, from my perspective we might as well be asking for Charles Manson's definition of a true Christian.

I just had time to read the first article but this was 1980 when the Chruch had a very different and very bad policy. It was standard practice to get help for priests and transfer them. Obviously it was done to avoid embarassment in the Church, and there can be no excuse for what he did but in my opinion he redeemed himself by taking the issue very seriously subsequently, and at a time when few others in the Church were. He singularly brought down Maciel Degollado, a major figure in the Church which caused shockwaves.

quote:

Prior to 2001, the primary responsibility for investigating allegations of sexual abuse and disciplining perpetrators rested with the individual dioceses. In 2001, Ratzinger convinced John Paul II to put the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in charge of all investigations and policies surrounding sexual abuse in order to combat such abuse more efficiently.[127][128] According to John L. Allen, Jr., Ratzinger in the following years "acquired a familiarity with the contours of the problem that virtually no other figure in the Catholic church can claim" and "driven by that encounter with what he would later refer to as 'filth' in the church, Ratzinger seems to have undergone something of a 'conversion experience' throughout 2003–04. From that point forward, he and his staff seemed driven by a convert's zeal to clean up the mess".[129] In his role as Head of the CFD, he "led important changes made in church law: the inclusion in canon law of internet offences against children, the extension of child abuse offences to include the sexual abuse of all under 18, the case by case waiving of the statute of limitation and the establishment of a fast-track dismissal from the clerical state for offenders."[130] As the Head of the CDF, Ratzinger developed a reputation for handling these cases. According to Charles J. Scicluna, a former prosecutor handling sexual abuse cases, "Cardinal Ratzinger displayed great wisdom and firmness in handling those cases, also demonstrating great courage in facing some of the most difficult and thorny cases, sine acceptione personarum (without exceptions)".[129][131]

Well, when you are a forest, you need pretty big trees to fall around you so they dont axe your ass. Scapegoating, or sacrificing,  in the solemn religious sense of the words.

Fargey, do you not recall the ill-tempered "discussion" we had on this issue last year? He was effectively a child at the time he joined Hitler Youth so he can hardly be blamed for the act. This was a time when he and perhaps his family could have faced severe repercussions if he did not do so because membership was expected of every young German.

That may be, but do they know the difference between an embryo and a single cell organism?

Back when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, Benedict issued the document that spurred me to leave Catholicism, my childhood faith.

I don't recall you denouncing the Israeli government for declaring Gunter Grass PNG...

Generally. Assuming that's directed at me the answer is initially absolutely nothing, the embryo starts as a single celled organism and very obviously not a person.

Why should I? He's hardly going to suffer as a result. They banned him from entry because they have a policy of doing so with former members of the SS etc. He volunteered to fight without having pressure to do so before being drafted and was a few years older than Ratzinger. Ratzinger was open about what happened but Grass hid the fact for 60 years!

And yet you claim there are people out there who feel they are more important than women. I have heard a lot of arguments for and against abortion. This is the first time anyone has claimed it had anything to do with this.
