I'm sure someone will correct me but the invasion of Afghanistan was seen as a reasonable success during the first few years. The Taliban were virtually destroyed in a relatively short period. The problems arose with the unnecessary invasion of Iraq which bolstered massive support in the Islamic world against it. It helped give credence to the message of extremists, and in turn caused massive long term problems in Afghanistan. BTW its more than a little ironic that the Taliban are outraged at an American soldier killing 17 civilians when they have killed a vast number of civilians in the conflict, and deliberately so.
