What he said was that they would have to work in order to be ELIGIBLE for WELFARE.

Let's make what Mitt said even clearer:

Being a stay at home mother is "work" if you're wealthy enough to afford it.

Being a stay at home mother is not "work" if you're on public assistance.

So Mitt Romney is on record as recently as January for saying that women on welfare need to get jobs, even if they have young children. More specifically, he said, ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.’.

And Ann Romney is on record as saying, "My career choice was to be a mother, and I think all of us need to know that we need to respect the choices women make".

So choices are respected as long as the woman in question is wealthy? Is that what I'm supposed to glean from this?

WTF??????

I don't give a flying fuck about Romney, but you're pissed off because he said people on the dole should try to get off? That they should try to get jobs?

"Even if they have young children".

WTF??????

You want these folks to teach their children that living off the govt. tit is a good thing?????

Are you smoking crack?

And by the way....WT flying F! has her being wealthy have to do with a GAWDamn thing?

She's fucking rich.

She's BEYOND fucking rich.

So fucking what?

She raised 5 boys.

She was married to a rich motherfucker....she married well.

And?

I am concerned about the hypocrisy involved here. If he believes being a stay-at-home mother IS work then fine. His policies should reflect that. The fact that you do not understand this (something which, btw, is being discussed in the mainstream media - this exact topic) is surprising to me. And he did not say he wanted them to get off of welfare. NO. Please read the thread carefully. What he said was that they would have to work in order to be ELIGIBLE for WELFARE. In other words Romney would like to have the state PAY to send women with young children to work so that the women CAN COLLECT WELFARE. So our tax dollars are still being spent, but in a way that truly makes no sense. Romney's policy would NOT save us any money as taxpayers. IS THIS NOW CLEAR???

In addition, the fact that you have no concern for those who are in a disadvantaged situation speaks volumes about who you are as a person. A civilized society is one that takes care of those who are in need. I will repeat what I said earlier in this thread:

The food stamp program has been growing and those who receive cash welfare payments has actually been declining. With the state of the current economy, and its disproportionate impact on women, we have to grapple with the idea of how, as a society, we will assist those in need. The problem is not just going to go away by asking poor women to get jobs. Why not just tell all unemployed Americans to just "go get a job". Again, solving a society's problems requires hard thinking, and also some compassion. Being wealthy enough to stay at home to take care of 5 children - well that makes you a lucky person in the lottery of life. But someone from such privilege should acknowledge that circumstances are not always so lucky for everyone in life. Ann Romney should be talking about how lucky she has been in life instead of supporting the idea of sending poor women with small children to work outside the home. She is unable to even imagine ever needing public assistance. Millions of women lose their husbands income due to divorce, disability, death and have to fend for themselves with young, dependent children at home. I have said it before in these forums, and I will say it again. How a society treats its weakest members says a lot about how enlightened a society is. Forcing the already down trodden into even harsher situations is not anything a wealthy person should be proud about advocating.

Wait a minute...it's bad for someone receiving a helping hand to do something productive for it?

They are doing something productive. Mitt and Ann Romney believe that being a stay-at-home mother IS work, and IS productive. So I see you are in agreement with me. I knew eventually you would see reason.

Here ya go:

quote:

At Mitt Romney’s proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.
There’s also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement — a room with more floor space than the existing home’s entire living quarters.

Those are just some of the amenities planned for the massive renovation of the Romneys’ home in the tony La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, according to plans on file with the city.

A project this ambitious comes with another feature you don’t always find with the typical fixer-upper: its own lobbyist, hired by Romney to push the plan through the approval process.

Work on the project has not yet begun.

But it may not help Romney — whose wealth has caused him trouble connecting with average folks — to be seen building a split-level, four-vehicle garage that comes with a “car lift” to transport automobiles between floors, according to 2008 schematic plans for the renovation obtained by POLITICO that are on file with the city of San Diego.

The leading Republican presidential contender wants to replace the beach house with a structure more than three times larger.

The schematic plans are only a precursor to more formal proposals to renovate the 76-year-old, 3,000-square-foot beach house. They include plans for the car elevator and more than 3,600 feet of underground living space. The plans detail that 1,500 cubic yards of earth be removed from the property to facilitate the construction of the large basement.

The plans indicate Romney would retain the home’s existing ocean-facing outdoor lap pool while adding an outdoor shower and a “water feature,” an unclear amenity that drew the attention of San Diego officials because of questions about where the water would drain.

These people have absolutely no idea how I live my life.

What is sad is there are so many people like them in the United States who do influence political policies. Power doesn't come from just being in the White House. Even outside of the White House, the Romneys have more power to influence what happens to others than I do.

People who say welfare people really want to work obviously never lived in public housing. In my young and foolish days, I lived in public housing. It was all about parties and good times. Welfare mothers (publicly) saying they can't get baby sitters so they can work. Then Friday and saturday night, (the busiest and hardest time to get a sitter)
suddenly no problem getting a sitter so they could party. Even had "education" talks at the playgrounds how to act (and not overact) around social workers to keep the mental benefits comming.

Get the reliable welfare mothers and give them jobs working at child care centers so the other mothers have no excuse to not work. You do realize that you ruin a whole generation where children grow up with no concept of a parent getting up and going to work. Everytime the government tries to right a wrong by just handing out money, it turns the people into helpless wastes. Look at the Indians for example. And blacks are trapped in a poverty cycle by welfare. "why even bother finishing high school? I can get a gauranteed government check!" Sounds good to a kid, but it gaurantees poverty.

They had a program on TV about welfare in the scandanavian countries. The kids there were honest. They flat out told the reporter, No, I am not looking for work and don't plan to work. Why should I?

Even assuming the truth of the obviously anecdotal story, with its citing of a 'tv show,' it has nothing to do with Ann Romney. If you believe, as many conservatives honestly do, that stay at home mothers raise more children with less social pathology than you should put your money where you mouth is and supported it were less social pathology is supposedly most desperately needed.

Yeah, mine is a little slow and takes almost 50 seconds to move 8 feet vertically :-)

Ya know what? I don't fucking get it.

Mitt Romney (and his wife) say that women (people...anyone) on the dole should participate...like....give something back...as in pay for their participation.

So, let's think this out for a minute....they're getting a check.

(Currently) doing nothing for it.

And Mitt and others are asking that they commit to giving something in return.

And that's bad?

Hmmmm....

So....you'd give a blank check to (anyone) who asked for something for nothing.

Right.

Okay....love it.

Glad you're willing to pay for it.

(I'm not).
