BamaD -> RE: The Desert One Debacle (4/27/2012 11:14:47 AM)

I was working at NSA at the time so I had some acsees to information.
Carter had been telling us all along that no military option could work.
Failure of the mission . not success fit his self proclaimed view of the situation ' as he reminded us in his I told you so speach.
He spent that summer trying to tell us that negotiation withour enemies was the only option we had open to us. His forieng affairs advisor was on all the talk shows telling us that the US was in decline and our only hope was eo make the best deal we could with the Chinese and the Arabs. It was part of his disconect that he thought this approach would help him.
The timing of the hostage release was clearly timed to embarass Carter.

You've told this lie before.

I'll once again ask what University is your advanced degree in mathematics from? Or maybe you worked in signal intercept and your PhD is in EE instead?

BTW simply admitting that you worked for the NSA would be a violation of the National Security Act as all personel past and present are classified.

thanks for injecting reality and facts into this

I am amazed that people just make claims here and aren't ever asked to document stuff. It's so easy to prove your point. A few folks here have Fauxnewsitis...wall mart great place to work?....Carter wanted failure....whiteguilt elected Obama....the black percentages....Whites victim in martoin case because of revenge killings. I understand strong beliefs but if they aren't backed up by fact it's time to change them.

The other "smell test," failure is comparing the NSA's mission with what would be involved in the op. The NSA are wiretappers, radio receivers, etc. Why would a "need to know," op be telling folks who gather information the "why," or their mission?

Well, I don't buy for a moment that Carter deliberately intended for the mission to fail, but I certainly expect he understood how low the odds of success were. He could easily have been sending every one of those men to their deaths, and he had to know that, and know that the final outcome could have been a hell of lot worse. How could he not try, though?

What made sense to me at 13, is what makes sense to me today, as to the final release. The Iranians held them until Reagan was sworn, as one final, "my friend," to Carter.

FR--

I agree with Softbonds - I've seen this event used in a wide variety of case studies from engineering disasters to military strategy/tactics. Several elements were pushed to their limit, which is a good way to break a system.

I doubt there are very many special forces operations where the men involved couldn't easily all be killed. That's why training and preperation are so important.

The Iranians clearly thought it important to politically embarass Carter. Whether that was because of the Camp David Accords, his support of the Shah or some nefarious action by the Reagan campaign is something we'll probably never know.

I was just going to point that out, I guess the whole Iran -Contra stuff and the 138 indicted people on Reagen staff are not included in the new updated history books.

really??? The thng is if Reagan didnt know as he claimed he wasnt in charge and the idea he was a good President laughable. If he did know it was the worst crime against the constitution a President ever committed and he should of been impeached
