My parents have a lot of puddings and boxed sweet mixes like cake mixes and stuff that expired in 2009, 2008, and i want to throw them away, but i hesitate to, because i feel it's rude, they bought it, and it was their money and if they wanna eat it as long as they're not trying to feed it to J and I , more power to them, as long as it's not going to make them sick. The salad dressings and stuff i will throw away, because that shit is clearly rancid, you can tell by looking at it.

I would suggest it to them and tell them that it doesn't look healthy and you're worried about them getting food poisoning.

Dunno about the US, but in some European countries everything needs an expiry date, even if it is clearly BS (coffee doesn't expire, nor does olive oil or items like soap), the cake mix might actually still be alright if it has no eggs in it.

They used to have aspirin an vitamins and tubes of cream , stuff from 2000's and below like 99 and my dad thought i was daft for throwing anything that old out, because to him it was perfectly fine, My dad doesn't believe that medication gets old , or that there's a reason to throw it out after so long. so I doubt he would see an issue with boxed goods being 3 or so years out of date. His solution was to try and eat up a lot of the stuff that was so old last time they found a bunch of old ish food boxes, But the puddings in particular tasted really stale and gross.

Box mixes don't have things like eggs in them, usually, it's the basic stuff you need and then you add eggs and milk and that kind of stuff as you're mixing it up to cook.

The ranches and sauces and shit that's obviously gross, i am not even going to mention, they're just going to quietly find their way into my trash bags that go out Sunday night.

With medication I throw everything out that's expired, also with stuff that's mixed and has ingredients that can spoil, but I have used stuff like flour or sugar that was past the expiration date and it was perfectly fine, as it was stored in a cool and dry place. I tend to keep stuff like that in boxed that are sealed anyway.

Sauces - no way, some of the stuff might contain mayo or such, err, nope, just nope....

I wouldn't mind an Aspirin that was say 6 months past date but they were some seriously out dated stuff, and i went on a field day one day when they were not home and threw everything medical and expired that i could away. We seriously had stuff from 1999.

My dad would probably agree with me throwing out the sauces and anything liquid like that, he's not that out of touch nor has the same opinion about food as he does medications.

The box mixes have been in a pantry for ages and it has not been exposed to moister or bugs, or pests or nothing. So i guess i could suggest try making a few items and see, if it taste stale then don't eat it, but if it don't eat away?

Leavening agents like baking soda and baking powder do have a shelf life so a cake mix probably wont rise all that well. Honestly, i would throw the mixes away instead of wasting eggs and oil on testingbthem.

Why stock up on things you rarely use? It's so wasteful. The trash is a good place for that stuff.

I keep nonperishable staples in the house (dried beans, rice, pasta, a few cans of tinned tomatoes, flour, etc.) but I prefer buying fresh, so I hardly ever run into that problem.

With dry mixes, they could still be edible after expiration date, but it's best to check. Sniff it when you open the packet and discard if it has any sort of musty, mothy, or just odd, smell or discoloured lumps. If you really need to save it, like the 10kg bag of sugar, remove the discoloured bits being careful not to break the lumps. Moisture will get into jello and pudding mixes even if the boxes remained sealed. If it's weirdly lumpy and smells stale, out it goes. Do not try anything that has powdered dairy in it.

Dried beans, pastas, rice etc should be sifted and checked carefully for bugs.

I don't bother checking anything that has some sort of liquid in it past 1 year, that's automatically trashed.

Glass jars with lids are very good for keeping stuff out that shouldn't be in it! If you keep packages open, some darned vermin will find the way in.

Indeed. It is quite coimmon here to open a cake mix or package of grain type product and find that meal worms have chewed through the inner packaging and made a home, laid eggs.

My mother used to by a mix called Bisquick and those moths dearly LOVE to creep into the seems of the box and chew through the inner package to get in and lay eggs. Who knows how many eggs and worms we ate as kids because my mother never considered keeping it in an air tight container. Not to mention, whether or not the grocer had stored it properly.

TFB, I would just pitch the stuff. It sounds as though they are not going to use it anyway. Why bother with finding a meal worm in a bowl of pudding?

I would throw it all. And maybe gently remind your parents that buying things they won't eat is wasteful. If things are getting short dated and they have no intention of eating it, I'm sure it could be given away somewhere like a homeless shelter, food kitchen, etc.

Even things like pasta change over time. We've taken to numbering stuff so we use the oldest item, in case something gets shoved aside.

Yes. Unfortunately I don't care for it so do not purchase it. Instead I just keep things in air tight containers and/or the deep freeze.
