I don't see any downside. You?

Yes. Irrelevance.

You could cut their pay entirely, and it would change nothing. The power and influence is worth far more than the frankly not very much we pay them now.

Paying them also allows us to continue the illusion that an ordinary common person could be elected and pursue a career as a legislator.

thats right and bang on

I'll be honest, I'd have no idea how to start a revolution, not even sure that would be the answer, so...I may or may not join if one were started.

There are many kinds of revolutions. Not all of em involve overthrows.... I think the people that keep saying 'fail' expecting a 'bloody revolution' or "all of the 99%" to be on board are either dull witted, or don't really have any idea of what's going on.

Read "The moon is a Harsh Mistress," That book should be outlawed by any totalitarian government...

This is true. I haven't been involved in my local occupy movement recently (explained some of that in a recent post). I just found out they have yet another, I think it is the 4th version of their website. I still think the original was the best, but the guy who had done that one was ousted from Occupy Erie because he actually lives in the next county to the south--how crazy is that??

Interesting that when this all began (someone correct me where I'm wrong....I'm working from memory here), they were all farmers/business men (it was all men) and the intent was....you came to (then Philly...later, upstate New York....then DC) as a businessman...you forgave your stipend of working....got a (very nominal stipend in Congress...less than you may have made staying at home) and then you went home.

Then somehow the Electoral College came in and it all changed.

But the essence was....you were a businessman/person.....you gave up your personhood and you gave your all...and then you went home.

(It's a smidge different know).

Yeah, that's weird ... but not nearly as weird as our current so-called democratic republic.

I think they should have to make due with the same pay and benefits as an E-1 in the military and they should have to pay rent on their offices.

Even a married E-1 gets a housing allowance.

Let's see how far that goes in Georgetown. I *think* it'll cover a studio or maybe a 1br...

Forget a housing allowance, just provide them with a big dorm. You can excavate under the congress building and it will make commutes minutes long, and double as a bomb shelter for them...

Well, since most of them no longer bring their families to DC to live anyway, this may not be a bad idea.
