This thread has really given me some food for thought...

Obama is forgiven for eating dog, how many, we'll never know... But Romney makes a mistake 15+ years ago, and there's hell to pay! That commie rat bastard!

More than 20% of the world's population live in a part of the world where dog meat is considered food. Obama ate dog in Indonesia.

I come from a background where cows are sacred. Does this mean I should not vote for people who repeatedly eat cows - in steaks, in hamburgers, etc. Because for ME, killing a sacred animal is an outrage.

I also come from a background that is vegetarian. Killing any animal for food is considered wrong. So from my perspective, Romney and Obama both eat animals slaughtered for the purposes of food. So your point is?

kalikshama -> RE: American Dog Owners!!!! (5/4/2012 12:50:45 PM)

...an excerpt from President Barack Obama's bestselling memoir "Dreams From My Father," in which Obama writes of eating dog meat when he was a little boy in Indonesia.

With Lolo [Obama's stepfather], I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.

...Eating dog meat in Indonesia might be less unusual than giving your dog a roof ride in America (several people on Twitter 'fessed up to having eaten dog abroad on Tuesday), but conservative media have seized on the story.

...Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt responded with a tweet questioning Fehrnstrom's decision to embrace the story from Obama's childhood: "What's the next attack @EricFerhn and the RNC will surface on a 6-10 year old?"

I have a friend who grew up on a farm. In America. She has had, at various times of her childhood, a pet duck, a pet pig, and a pet lamb. Any guesses as to where those pets ended up?

And check out this website. In America.

One either believes animals can be slaughtered for food, or one does not. Philosophically there is no in between. There is only cultural and historical artifact. The reality is that of the people in the world who eat animals, people in different parts of the world eat different types of animals.

And many people in the world do not believe in killing ANY animal for food. For some, philosophically, killing a fish or chicken for food is as repugnant as killing any other living animal.

Suzy The 4H goat? Yum

I always wondered what that dappled gray arab son of a bitch stallion "Boots" would have tasted like. I HATED that mother fucker.

And as a hunter and fisherman who still takes at least the fishing part seriously, I have eaten a number of things (least the raw ones that would make most here miss dinner.

I'm okay with people who use any animal properly dispatched for whatever useful purpose they want. So long as it was dispatched without cruelty. I am sure that wherever dog is prepared, they are slaughtered quickly. In fact there are sanitary reasons for doing so in most instances.
For example we now all know the pitfalls of slaughtering an animal using the roof of a speeding car

Here, I highlighted my point, maybe you'll get it now...

fucktoyprincess -> RE: American Dog Owners!!!! (5/4/2012 2:43:21 PM)

SternSkipper, I just wanted to say, I did enjoy the video - hugely funny - and sorry if I've de-railed the thread a little, but I honestly feel people need to make a distinction between animals slaughtered for food, and what Romney did to his dog (a truly domestic pet - not a "farm pet" - who, in my mind, is tantamount to a member of the family). In other words, Romney's dog was entrusted to his family by someone (a breeder? Humane Society? Neighbor?) with the expectation that it would be cared for properly as a domestic pet until the dog died of natural causes. By no means a 4-H goat. If this is how Romney treats an animal entrusted to his care, what makes any of us think he will do any better with the country if we entrust it to his care?

The Obama eating dog in Indonesia is a separate issue about a majority of the world's population being omnivores and the implications for animals, generally. If people want to go down the slaughtering any animal for food is wrong path, I am more than happy, philosophically, to do so. But then any candidate who is not a vegetarian is prone to the same attack.

If I were to come back in my next life as a dog, I would rather not be born in Indonesia. But if I came back as a cow, I have to say, I would not want to be born in America, I'm thinking India would be a better bet. But if were an American dog, and had to be someone's pet, I would much rather be in the Obama household, than in the Romney household. [:D]

Even if having a point for you is just a fantasy Rob, it's good to have goals[8D]

You would think this joke was something that was JUST brought up for the election. Dude ... this story comes up in new england every time he sticks his face in the paper. His sloppy drunk arrest comes up a little less.
But like when people are partying in Massachusetts and someone at a party where people are getting a buzz on... someone brings up Mitt Romney and almost like clockwork some one will loudly ask/proclaim "Do You Know Who I AM?" ... Sorry to burst your bubble... the guy is just poorly regarded by the people of the state he CLAIMS is his home.
But go ahead and vote for the guy. Just don't whine so much as you do while people are laughing at his expense.
It's not a 'secret conspiracy' it's fucking humor... which is apparently totally LOST on some people. And for my part, if you ever post anything about any candidate/public figure that doesn't just sound like a pissed off clerk making derogatory missives or uttering some witicism that sounds like it was stolen from Servant4use... I'll laugh.
I mean if that ever actually happens.

OH, not at all ... flowing topic ... I'm cool with that... you only get so much out of ONE funny video, and it's NOT by a long shot a serious topic (despite the apparent effect it's having on some [8D] )... I like a thread like this now and then and to be honest... My kids and I are getting my son ready his hike up this mountain and your link to the Exotic Meat site gave us a welcomed break I have a 13 y.o. son who's a huge outdoorsman/athlete and a daughter who's 10 and seriously wants to be a vet who's already dissected most of the marine species around here.... they were fascinated...
[image]local://upfiles/18637/68CBCF25B96E4F4D91AE7DD7527AC043.jpg[/image]
...So keeping it light is fun. It used to be that every once in a while we could afford a meandering humorous thread. Perhaps that's not gone.
If you haven't seen it before you should search in "off topic" for "rapture" we did one during last year's "Rapture Week" that was a total hoot.

And besides... if the 'other side' can't take a joke.. eff em.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: American Dog Owners!!!! (5/4/2012 4:54:49 PM)

All I can say, is I'm surprised at how quiet the Republican "people shouldn't eat dogs" people got.

I guess they all just want to enjoy their bacon-wrapped steak in peace.

I can hardly blame them.

And thankfully, I'm out of steam, or would have started on my "plants feel pain" soap box, too. Yes, it's true. Even as we speak, researchers are studying the electrical impulses that plants send through their system http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/site/sn/video/player/latest-videos/do-plants-respond-to-pain/407509484001/

Maybe we just need to get over ourselves and acknowledge that we eat organisms that were once alive. Plant, animal.

Okay, maybe more brownie baking. But dang, I've gotta use eggs. Oh no. Now we have to have the frickin' potential life debate.

What will I be able to eat?

Who will I be able to vote for? [&:]

Quick DUCK Pro-Lifer incoming![:D]

I'll tell ya one thing... you and my 10 year old would get along great She is my brownie queen. She's all into what I buy to make em and everything. And we have to have em stoked in case she visits Mom and it's stressful. (and I have to confess, I tried to do em from scratch... but they basically tasted like DOG).

He doesn't base his 'math' on regional history.... We bay staters will laugh about his dog episode probably every spring vacation season till someone prominent does something significantly more stupid to their pet.

Thanks. this is the first time I have heard about it and wondered what the pic on the first page was supposed to mean. Now I understand it. I think still think it's stupid, but at least I understand where it came from. I thought the part about taking on the powers of the animal was interesting.

Nice, fun topic. I really don't have much to add, except to explain to subrob why his complaints are off the mark.

Obama ate dog when he was a CHILD!! He really had little control over what was offered to him at the age of 6. 15 years ago, Romney was a grown man and should have known better than to put his PET on the roof of his car!!!

That is the difference!!

President Obama was born in 1961. He was 6-10 years old at the time of the incident in question. So how many years ago was that?

Additionally, why are you holding a child to a lesser standard than an adult?

You're quite welcome. All my years of listening to NPR has taught me the value of context over sound bites.

Something to do with the fact that six year olds haven't been allowed to run a country since the middle ages, perhaps?
