I've seen several profiles using photos of very hot young women (18-19) that include links to see more of their photos (duh, obvious red flag there that it could be a scammer).

The reason I'm posting this is because I'm sure some men (well, I admit I was) are curious and may follow the link anyway fer kix. It leads to a download of a zip file, and all seems to be kosher (no virus). But opening any of the pictures will also trigger a silent (virus or trojan?) attack. I was lucky enough that my Norton Anti-virus caught it. I had to shred all the files before it stopped the all-out attack (launching every few seconds). I also have a couple other layers of protection that I hope would have also caught it (meh).

Below is a mocked up example of such a profile. I changed the wording to avoid TOU issues, so this is not about one specific person (really, a scammer, probably same person doing this with many fake profiles).

Yes - I reported the profile as a scammer.

IMHO, anyone dumb enough to click a link like that, on a profile like that, deserves a virus.

You really let your dick lead you that much?

Aren't you the same guy who created a long post about how to safely click on any link? Why yes, yes you are. http://www.collarchat.com/m_4095871/mpage_1/tm.htm

So why are you warning everyone about viruses and scammers now?

lol doood, it's the interwebs. you're saying you haven't clicked on any porn link, that could have led you right to a virus?

yes, i was.

true, there's a link in the profile, but you don't get any virus clicking on the link. what i discussed in the other thread was my attempt to help people feel safer clicking links.

i started this thread to be about, or to try and help people who may download a zip file that doesn't alert as being infected. specifically, relating to fake profiles.

so what's your post about?

that was a smart move. it was just showing my picture viewer as the program type. and there were pictures.

also, don't be ashamed. trolling aside, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see nude pictures of someone posting their profile here. done that many many times. and when you download a zip file full of files that are listed as a picture viewer (at least for me), and the files scan fine, there's nothing wrong or stupid about it.

okay, then i "let my dick lead me that much". so? not that it matters, but i'm probably in the majority. and we all "deserve" to get a virus.

what ever the purpose of your post was, you did it. you win. case closed.

Equally important is to report such profiles so that the support staff can get to them as quickly as possible.

An obvious point perhaps but while we can all be caught out by iffy links, downloading any file from an unknown source is dodgy to say the least.

may i humbly suggest that clicking reply and typing "thanks" to those who report profiles will alert people who do so, that it's not going into a black hole. i realize being a mod is hard work (not being sarcastic), and i admire those who take their time to do it. but good communication is part of it, and really, saves time in the long run.

I'm going to try this again.

Please note that Gamma said "the support staff".  Those are the folks who handle  issues from the Collar Chat side.  (Profiles, email issues, etc.)  The Moderators handle forums issues from the Collar Me side.

Your suggestion of sending a thank you in response to every reported profile would not be humanly possible.  Do you even know how many thank you emails they would have to send out a day?  That would be on top of the workload they already have to try to keep their heads above water with everything they already have to do.  I'd much rather they used their time to address the issues that are actually being reported than to have to add an additional email for every report they receive.

no, i don't know how many emails they get, or how long that would take. perhaps 10 extra seconds each email? it could even be automated. how many do you think they get, and how long do you think it takes? coming from an IT background, including helping to support and maintain enterprise-wide sites, this doesn't seem like a big deal to me. esp if you factor in future time savings that better communications offers (E.g., less BS complaints).

well, you get my point - we obviously disagree.

still, thank you for informing me that the mods here are different than the staff on other side. i don't know what you meant by trying this again, since i'm not sure how i would know that there's different staff on each side. sorry if perhaps you told me that before and i missed it.

i'm just going to be really blunt here. this is not the first thread that i've started, with sincere intentions to help others, and/or perhaps even offer suggestions for improvement on the board, or just contribute.

frankly, i'm becoming a bit disillusioned and even angry that every time i do this, rather than just saying thanks, or even better, offering up things that can constructively add to the thread, so many jump in just to un-constructively tear down the thread, or the advice or info i'm humbly offering. Or, try to belittle me for the most ridiculous things that don't mean anything. it's fine if you disagree with me - I actually like when that's done constructively, because we all learn from it (esp me).

after being on boards like this for about 10 years, including being Jewish on a board dominated by Arabs and Muslims, i don't think i have a thin skin. in fact, the Arabs who openly admitted they wanted to blow me up responded better to me, or to anyone offering advice or help, even unsolicited (like this thread).

disclaimer - i'm not saying Arabs are any better or worse as a people. Nor am I dissing the fine people who post regularly on the board site of CM. this is not directed to the entire group, nor any particular person. I'm just giving you my newb impression after spending a rather considerable amount of time posting here over a very short period of a few weeks. I'm fine with myself as a human and a person for those who may react to this by trying to tear me a new one because of this or that pop psychology internet diagnosis they apply to me. And for those who will say I'm the one who's stirring or creating drama, please look in the mirror. You know damned well what you're doing when you jump in to disparage.

Peace out

PS - Reikm and a few others - thank you very much for taking this thread in the spirit it was offered, and even sharing your own foibles. and thank you LadyPact - i really enjoy your posts and admire your intelligence and helpfulness - you're a fine person. but let's just say i'm disappointed, and think you're way off on your approach this time.

edited for clarity.

Actually I think LP was quite helpful and was trying to explain to you what goes on. I agree with you, a quick automated "Message received, we'll look into it" message would possibly help as often it really feels like you are just reporting to a black hole...

agree on that (helpful, trying to explain) - she always is. it's more the tone - starting out with "let's try this again", and then totally discounting the possibility that this could be a useful thing to do, because of some nebulous huge amount of volume that i'm obviously too stupid to grasp. similar to two other people flat out calling me stupid last night, saying that a mod's signature was them working on the post, when in fact, the post was mistakenly hidden (so they were the stupid ones). of course, LadyPact isn't directly calling me stupid, and i don't think it was her intent.

i still stand behind my prior comments.

Given that there are probably quite a few similar profiles and that it's quite possible a large number of people will report each one, I wouldn't want to be the poor volunteer stuck sending out the individual thank you letters. Does an automated response honestly get you anything better in terms of communication? If so, what? I don't mean those questions rhetorically, I'm genuinely curious what you see as the advantage. To me, simply removing the profile promptly is more than adequate acknowledgement.

I'm actually not just claiming that hypothetically. A couple weeks ago one of those profiles you mention happened to pop up on the home page for me. Given the less than convincing wording, the pictures taken off the web (Google's Search by Image has its uses…), and a suspicious link from a URL-shortening service, my curiosity was indeed piqued. For me, though, the curiosity stemmed from the head that goes "Hmm, something here doesn't look right at all…", not the one that tends to merely think, "Hot!"

Checking where the URL was redirecting in the HTTP Response Header and then quickly scanning the link with a handy online tool confirmed my suspicions of the file's malicious nature without the need to actually risk downloading anything.* I reported the profile and also used the site's Support page to briefly describe the problem under the 'Other' category. Within 48 hours, the profile had been removed. That seemed like a perfectly reasonable and satisfactory response to me.

The file I looked at had been downloaded over a thousand times. Given that rather dispiritingly high figure, a thread like this just might benefit someone and I don't see it as a bad idea. But avoiding such things really should be common sense - downloading and opening files of uncertain provenance online can't be called a smart idea. That goes at least doubly so if in the pursuit of wank fodder.

*Because I'm weird, once I knew it was malware targeting Windows I actually did eventually download the zip archive to poke around some with the .scr files – but only in a non-admin account in a non-Windows OS in a virtual machine set up explicitly for the purpose and running on a non-Windows host.

An automatic thank you message would not change a thing but it might just give people the feeling that it's not pointless to report
