TheHeretic -> What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/4/2012 9:06:37 PM)

Her great-great-great-grandmother was Cherokee, so she claims minority status on her way to a job at Harvard, and we're supposed to enbrace her ideas on consumer protection?

But she has the cheekbones, dammit!

So she's part Cherokee, so am I, but she never received any sort of preferential treatment and never sought any such.

BTW I'm a fair skinned, curly brown haired stereotypically Celtic man but my great grandmother was definitely Cherokee.

Heretic, just curious... doesn't sound to you like someone trying to find something, anything, to use against her for political gain? She says "They're screwing you, and I aim to stop them" and now they're digging through her genes?

C'mon, I KNOW there's a rational mind in there, and I'm not being sarcastic.

I'm supposedly part Cherokee on my father's side (don't know for sure because I never knew the sperm donor or his family). My mom's grand father was full-blood Seneca. I can't join that tribe, dammit, because they trace lineage through the women and as soon as my great-grandfather left the tribe to marry a white woman that was the end of the line.

My heritage does show.

Where are you seeing anything irrational, Violet? She's the one who promoted herself that way. What's the issue about calling a consumer protection advocate on false advertising?

1/32? C'mon. That's a fetish at best, or a fraud, not an ethnicity. I'm more Cherokee and Chickasaw than that. (6 of my great-great-great-grandparents were Native American)

(edit cause my mental math was wrong - counted my great-great-grandmother, instead of her parents)

MasterSlaveLA -> RE: What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/4/2012 11:35:50 PM)

Maybe she thought they were asking if she HAD a Cherokee (instead of WAS a Cherokee), on her application?!! [8D]

I'm part Nipmuc and have never received anything, nor asked for anything, so why slam people who are native of this country?

kalikshama -> RE: What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/5/2012 6:41:06 AM)

So what biased source did you get that sound bite from?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Warren

The professor who recruited Warren to Harvard, Charles Fried, told the Associated Press that Warren was hired solely for her qualifications, and not for any reasons related to ancestry.[49]

http://www.masslive.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/05/elizabeth_warren_being_native.html

For almost a decade in the 1980s and 90s, Warren's Native American ancestry was mentioned in a directory of law professors compiled by the Association of American Law Schools.

Warren said she listed her ancestry in the directory with hopes of being invited to a luncheon or event by people "who are like I am." When that didn't happen, she stopped checking the Native American box on the directory listing, she told the Herald.

The professor who recruited Warren to Harvard, Charles Fried, told the Associated Press that Warren was hired for her qualifications, not any part of her ancestry.

"That's totally stupid, ignorant, uninformed and simply wrong," Fried, also a Harvard Law School professor, told the AP on Monday. "I presented her case to the faculty. I did not mention her Native American connection because I did not know about it."

http://bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20220502warren_i_used_minority_listing_to_make_friends/

The Harvard Law professor argued she didn’t use her minority status to get her teaching jobs, and slammed her Republican rival U.S. Sen.Scott Brown for suggesting otherwise.

“The only one as I understand it who’s raising any question about whether or not I was qualified for my job is Scott Brown and I think I am qualified and frankly I’m a little shocked to hear anybody raise a question about whether or not I’m qualified to hold a job teaching,” she said, pushing to put Brown on defense. “What does he think it takes for a woman to be qualified?”

I plucked it from YouTube, Kalikshama, and I'll just guess that HER OWN ANSWER was posted there by somebody who found it completely ridiculous, as I do.

Repeating the dumb denials, and flailing attempts her campaign has finally come up with to answer the questions, and try to spin it into something else doesn't make those arguments any better.

She wanted to get invited to a luncheon, where she might meet some Native Americans??? Yeah, that's a deep ancestral connection going there, ain't it?

Yes, I'm sure Harvard made sure such a statement was made.

What answer do you think she should give when she gets asked how her vision of consumer protection would handle false advertising claims?

mnottertail -> RE: What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/5/2012 8:41:32 AM)

Maybe she should scalp the false advertizers.   It aint like there is anything else working.

But I am unable to discern what she has falsified.  Can someone come up with anything credible at all?

Rich and his Internet Girlfriend<tm> really have a loser here. I'm not even going to be a supporter of Warren.

1) You are talking about the Bay State which was the 1st state to give serious amounts of state and private land to the Wampanoag, only to find out that half of em were cape verdeans but the fact is, because some family lore existed, nobody raised and eyebrow.... And I can't even BEGIN to count the number of people in New England who have claimed to me that they have "Indian" somewhere in their family tree.

2)Everybody know it's a sour grapes thing because some reporter published the fact that Brown posed nude when he was in college and is alleged to have used a sugar mama to get through school and Warren merely responded to one of his insulting diatribes on camera about the amount of money she borrowed to educate herself hinting that she may have defaulted on those loans (she didn't, she actually had most of them paid off before she entered public life) ... Warren merely responded to one of Brown's snippy remarks with; "I at least kept my clothes on"

3)In Massachusetts (try to remember what a living hell for you right wingers living here is supposedly), MOST of the laws concerning minority status read "Women and Minorities" Why? Because whether or not anyone abides by them or not, and there's a BIG question there since you hear so much bristling over 'the advantages' women supposedly have in mass. And even the New England Miniority business associations are populated with a majority of white women from middle class backgrounds. So really, if Warren got herself any advantage, it was because she is a woman. Which is all above board and completely ethical. Unless you wish to open that can of worms that women lead some kind of privileged life with all the card stacked in their favor. In which case, let me know before hand so I can get a chaise lounge and a nice fresh organic ice tea and watch the fireworks.

4) And THIS is the REALLY IMPORTANT feature, which I apparently will have to repeat to many fence posts till they turn to sawdust apparently, is IF YOU DON'T LIVE INSIDE THE BORDERS O THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS, WHAT FUCKING BUSINESS IS IT OF YOURS???
It's OUR SEAT, OUR CONSTITUENCY and messing with it is equivalent to cheating at cards or stealing from the poor box and those engaging in it are basically assholes. Please tell Karl Rove (as if it matters).

Or maybe what the MEDIA should do is start spending this wasted fucking airtime to let voters know there are actually 4 Candidates running for that Senate Seat...

Maybe Sonny Bono was involved with somebody else at the time?

LOL. Thanks, Sternskipper. I can always use a good belly laugh in the morning.

Shhhhhsh it's time now on Derby Day where Rich reveals the hat he's chosen to wear to the race... The fashion gurus all predict he'll choose intense spring colors and lots of taffeta.

TheHeretic -> RE: What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/5/2012 12:12:33 PM)

Sternskipper, all the blustery emptiness, attempts to distract and redirect, and even the personal attack hijack attempt don't answer the question of how she thinks false advertising is appropriately dealt with in her vision of protecting consumers.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: What? No Elizabeth Warren thread? (5/5/2012 12:24:27 PM)

FR

Seems like she did not use this to help her get her job.

And it also seems that she can, in fact, claim Cherokee heritage.

At 1/32 Cherokee she has as much Cherokee in her as Bill John Baker, the current Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. And most Cherokee are of mixed descent. So she seems pretty Cherokee to me. And at 1/32 Cherokee, both Warren and Baker are much more Cherokee than me - at zero.

I know plenty of people who when asked about their heritage will list a long litany of backgrounds - which means some of the backgrounds are obviously a small part, but so what? If it's true, and if someone feels in their heart that part of their background is important to their identity and that that part of their background helps inform their thinking, then as a diverse country, do we not applaud her for this?
