This question was posed to me the other day and I was a little surprised by the answer.

What is the largest minority group in the US?

Hint:  This group increased by 24% between 1990 and 2000

Nearly 1/3 of the adults in this group earn an income below the poverty level and the people of this group are nearly 2X as likely as those of the general population to earn an annual income of $15,000 or less

There are approximately 54 million people in the US among this group.  It is expected to double in the next 20 years.

Does anybody know the answer?

DarkSteven -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 6:18:31 PM)

I suspect it's either atheists or born-agains.

littlewonder -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 6:23:27 PM)

caucasians

erieangel -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 6:50:18 PM)

I'll let a few more posters guess before giving the answer.

You're both wrong.

DarkSteven -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 7:10:33 PM)

Well, it's not ethnic minorities. It's evidently not religious people.

I'll go by age range. Could it be retirees? I doubt it's teenagers since the population of them will decrease.

The disabled?

thompsonx -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 7:14:06 PM)

Is this the same group who stuff a .45 in their mouth and squeeze one off about 15 or 20 times a day?

punisher440 -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 7:16:20 PM)

My guess is the elderly.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 7:18:36 PM)

Good guess punisher.

erieangel -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 7:41:35 PM)

It's the disabled.

That's 19% of the population, incidentally.

Blacks make up about 12.7%; Hispanics 13.9%; Asians  about 4.4%; Native American, Inuit, Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders about 1.5%

Can we just go ahead and presume that anyone who questions the validity of some percentage of those "disabilities," will be taken as hating all the people who legitimately are disabled?

In what way are you "questioning the validity"?

BTW, much of my information came from the 2000 Census brief on disability.

http://www.disabilityfunders.org/webfm_send/70

I did the research after the topic came up in a training at work, though I don't think I'd be given that information at work if it were wrong, do you?  I mean, I work for a respectable mental health agency.

And one of the things  you seem to be forgetting about this group is that anybody can join at any time during their life...

Musicmystery -> RE: Minorities (5/19/2012 11:04:01 PM)

None the less, that's one in five people as disabled.

Seems very high, even if we have a very low bar for "disabled."

Moonhead -> RE: Minorities (5/20/2012 6:03:48 AM)

Depends how you define a disability. If Autism and diabetes qualify, that's a fair few already.

Musicmystery -> RE: Minorities (5/20/2012 8:59:26 AM)

Well Moon, that's the question.

From what I'm seeing on my end of the research spectrum, Erieangel's numbers are not to far off the mark. Check the Information Out from the CDC.. According to the CDC, 47.5 Million US Adults have a Disability. This shouldn't shock people when you consider the many factors: A) The growing ages of the baby boomers, B) Deregulations into many industries, C) Cutting of health coverage/care, D) Poor education and Knowledge Base of Adults regarding a wide range of medical issues. For instance, the Top 10 Most Addictive Substances have noted long term effects on the human body. Two of them are legally sold in the USA far and wide! Even further, Obesity is becoming a major factor in American due to What it can do to the Human Body

Still not convinced? Just go on to youtube.com and search under 'failblog' and take notice of teenagers doing horribly dumb things based on very little thought. Some of those injuries are life long! How about all those who were teenagers doing stupid stuff that led to an injury....BEFORE....youtube.com was created?

Likewise, the population of the country is expected to grow, and with it, the disabled Americans along with it. As Erieangel pointed out, that mental and emotional illnesses can develop later in life. How about all those soldiers returning home from abroad with problems of PTSD, Depression, and even trouble just 'handling life after war'?

I would have to agree with that one. My ex roommate joined and he's not even disabled. Just a really good liar.

littlewonder -> RE: Minorities (5/21/2012 7:12:11 AM)

It seems anyone can be "disabled" these days.
Like thishereboi said, a lot of people are good at lieing.

Moonhead -> RE: Minorities (5/21/2012 7:21:41 AM)

Which is true, but a completely spurious point: a liar isn't disabled, and somebody with (say) Lou Gehrig's disease doesn't cease to have a disability just because some other cunt's lying to their benefits office.

littlewonder -> RE: Minorities (5/21/2012 7:26:19 AM)

but it skews the numbers.
