The school used to always teach it as it tied into social studies and science.

How pray tell does the Bible tie into science?

littlewonder -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/23/2012 3:36:59 PM)

Well for one, in the bible it speaks about how foods were to be prepared and how people were to be clean. Science tells us that preparing foods and ourselves in certain ways keeps us from getting infections from viruses and germs.

Also the bible speaks about relationships where in science we know such as being close to your partner through touch and intimacy creates oxytocin that secretes dopamine that makes us happy.

There is a line in the bible that states the world is a circle, whereas up until the renaissance, others thought the world was flat.

There are also parts in the bible that speak of creation being made up of the "invisible"...atoms that we cannot see.

But what always gets me is that science can explain almost everything in the world but then who created science? What created the blackness before the universe was created? Or do atheists simply believe that there was nothing? Well what created nothing?

There are answers if you have the time.

'A Universe From Nothing' by Lawrence Krauss, AAI 2009

A circle is two-dimensional. A circle is, in fact, flat.

It is a sphere that is three-dimensional, like a ball.

So, to the extent that the Bible does in fact, use the word "circle" that actually does imply flat (unless the Bible says something else).

GotSteel -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/23/2012 7:35:58 PM)

*face palm* So in other words the Bible had no business being taught in science class.

Actually the earth was proven to be spherical in the 3rd century BCE and was believed to be spherical for centuries before that. The back slide into flat earth theory was Bible based.

Stephen Hawking explains all that right here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Grand-Design-Stephen-Hawking/dp/055338466X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

Who created God?

"If a God doesn't exist, it would be necessary for Man to invent one" (or something like that, I'm going from memory) would have Voltaire's* response. For balance, he adds: "If a God exists, it would be necessary for Man to deny His existence".

Some people might find it odd that others use cause-and-effect arguments to argue that there is something with out a cause. If the conclusion is valid, it automatically and necessarily invalidates the argument leading to the conclusion. In other words, the conclusion ( 'a god exists') cannot follow (logically) from the argument.

* I think it was Voltaire but could be mistaken in my recollection

Awesome! He can use absolutely anyone even the unbelieving to get his word out.

No doubt, it is rather trivial. How can anybody understand the human culture and history without knowing religions and the Bible?

They read another sex and crime book?

Pretty simple, relationships were even before the bible, food laws made sense as people didn't get sick, what better way to make them observe them than threatening them with an all powerful being?

Well, we might not be able to completely understand the big bang theory and what was before, but a few hundred years ago people didn't understand thunder and lightning - that didn't make Zeus or Thor real. A lot of answers create a lot of questions in term, it's the easy solution to invent a deity, it's actually what stops people from looking for more answers.

A belief is not knowing, Atheists don't know but nor do religious people, only if you claim that something is there, the scientific burden is on you...

Personally I thank god every day for proving that Jean Paul Satre didn't exist...

But the bible and sex education and crime were all the same.

But you knew that, I'm sure.

But were crime and sex ed the worse for having religion excluded?

The world awaits.

Edwynn -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/24/2012 1:24:49 AM)

Too bad that the contemporary media is doing now what religion did in the past, that is, pulling us by the ring in the nose as to what we are supposed to be in a hizzy fit over.

My, how we have progressed.

You mean having David doing away with a loyal guy so he could fuck his wife is a good example? Personally I think sex ed should not mucked up with fairy tales and shit like "conception is wrong" but give the facts, which would be "don't get pregnant by mistake as it can fuck up your life" and even more important "don't catch STDs through unprotected sex".

As for crime, yeah, all the robbers get really discouraged by religion and an abstract god concept, not the possibility of being caught and doing time...

Edwynn -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/24/2012 1:42:48 AM)

It worked at the time. Not meaning to defend any of it. All the more reason that, as you spell out, adaptation is necessary to continuation of the original intent.

We don't live in tribes anymore, which is one of several reasons why religion should not be 'taught' in schools.

I survived that experience, myself, but the world changes quickly, and we have to adapt or perish. But the Catholic catechism was bad about throwing out the baby with the bath water when it came to what was good to eat or not, no question. No worries, we learn things later in life to the extent we are capable, previous inculcation notwithstanding.

And yeah, it's funny how some thought they could come to the US and flout the laws concerning state divers' licenses or other requisites by way of their religion requiring a facial veil at all times. Good on France for banning the burqas in public, while we're at it.

Seriously, the food laws made a lot of sense in every religion, and then we invented refrigerators....

Hasn't it ever bothered you that god can't speak for himself? That people who can't even agree on what his word is are the ones doing all the talking?

Personally I've never understood the purpose of this food law or why it would be one of the ten commandments?

quote:

ORIGINAL: Exodus 34:26-28 NIV
“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

littlewonder -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/25/2012 7:33:15 AM)

It wasn't so much a dietary law but based on ethics.

The pagan community had a ritual for rain where they boiled a baby goat in its mother's milk. The Jews were separating themselves from such people. Another reason for it was to respect the mother and child just as they also had a law where you do not gather eggs while the mother watches.

Fightdirecto -> RE: Dawkins says Yes to Bibles in schools (5/25/2012 7:44:14 AM)

I think Mr. Dawkins' idea is not a bad one, though I question whether there is enough time during the school year to cover all the things that should be covered, and at what age the students should be studying what books & ideas.

I believe, for example, that the Bible and Sam Harris’ “The End Of Faith” should be taught as a “compare and contrast” lesson.

I believe that Adam Smith’s “An Inquiry Into The Nature And Causes Of The Wealth Of Nations”, Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle", Karl Marx’s “Das Capital”, Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" and Chapter 4* of the Book of Acts from the Bible should be taught as a “compare and contrast” lesson.

I believe that Karl Marx’s & Friedrich Engels’s “The Communist Manifesto”, Mao Tse-Tung’s “Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung”, Adolph Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and Alexander Hamilton’s, James Madison’s & John Jay’s “The Federalist Papers” should be taught as a “compare and contrast” lesson.

quote:

*
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: NEITHER SAID ANY OF THEM THAT OUGHT OF THE THINGS WHICH HE POSSESSED WAS HIS OWN; BUT THEY HAD ALL THINGS COMMON. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. NEITHER WAS THERE ANY AMONG THEM THAT LACKED: FOR AS MANY AS WERE POSSESSORS OF LANDS OR HOUSES SOLD THEM, AND BROUGHT THE PRICES OF THE THINGS THAT WERE SOLD, AND LAID THEM DOWN AT THE APOSTLES' FEET: AND DISTRIBUTION WAS MADE UNTO EVERY MAN ACCORDING AS HE HAD NEED.

Apparently this belief that those in the Days of Yore assumed the world to be flat is relatively modern. Most put the blame at the door of Washington Irving in the early 19th century. See http://www.qi.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=9051&start=2&sid=a83783e7ad6b6d66778b2b769ff3dabf
