Actually the earth was proven to be spherical in the 3rd century BCE and was believed to be spherical for centuries before that. The back slide into flat earth theory was Bible based.

Also false. There was no backslide. Scholars knew the Earth was spherical the entire time.

Not quite, certainly there were some scholars who still had access to classical works on the subject, it wasn't completely lost to western civilization like calculus.

However I don't think that justifies denying the rise and popularity of Bible based flat earth scholarship. You might want to check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_earth#Early_Middle_Ages

In particular note how the scarcity of classical texts gave rise to weird Biblical scholarship on the subject.

FR

Did anyone even need the classical works to know that the Earth was round? You can see that there's a curve on the horizon just by holding out a flat edge as you look out to sea.

Fair enough. For the first four days, it is indeed single-celled.

Here's another current example (part religious part political) of certainty, smugness, superiority and even outright pointing and laughing being expressed not at a religious or political difference but at the demonstrable factual failings of a position.
