I read a good joke posting on Catholic school girls, and it eventually got me thinking.   I say eventually, because I clicked on that topic fast - which was a visceral reaction that surprised me a little.

So, when actual thought kicked back in, I wondered:  How many people here raised Catholic have visceral/instinctive reactions to images from Catholic upbringing?

I'm hoping to avoid too much discussion of the usual crucifixes/madonnas/ kind of imagery, but if that's where it leads, it does.  Positive stories would also be good, rather than rants against the church (plenty of space for that elsewhere).

I was thinking more about things like whether the nuns scared (or enticed, I suppose) you, what kinds of punishment rituals might be associated in your minds with Catholic school, or perhaps whether Catholic school uniforms might provoke an arousal response.

My own upbringing is tinged with all sorts of things that can be associated with Catholice images.  I don't consider myself a Catholic ever since I first had a real choice, and I'm not religeous, but you can't spend all that time in the system and not absorb a hell of a lot.

Anyone else?

Raises hand high...I was raised Roman Catholic and trust me, there is a difference. Roman Catholic's of the "European Sect"...engrossed in tradition and what we are told, "chastity!" The American Catholic Church is less tied to Rome (The Newman Centers)..and I enjoyed it when I was taken there for Mass.
Even more interesting, my mother got ill when I was a preteen, and my father left me with the Nuns to help raise me...Now, is that an image or what? The images of statues and saints were always confusing to me and I thought them to be outdated and boring as a child.

I wore the catholic school girl uniform but thought it tiresome with too much wool. Never got aroused by it, nor saw anyone else for that matter get excited either.

The Nuns were actually the kindest people I ever knew. They never talked to me about what I should or should not do...they just wanted me to be a good person and never seek to hurt another living soul.  I guess they were just really cool Nuns? The only Nun that hit me was of the Franciscan Order, (The Teachers) so to speak...and it was for talking in class. She used a ruler and was a real meanie. I talked anyway...lol.

Sexually, my need to submit comes from my need to serve and crosses and madonna's never cross my mind. If I were still a practicing Catholic, I don't think I would have discovered who I am sexually or released myself in submission the way I have.

I guess what I'm saying is that I've never seen a connection to my submission and being raised Catholic. I guess it's because I got away from the guilt of the Church that I have been able to be what I am today.

I say this respectfully to you as a Catholic. My entire family still practices and I don't judge or make comments about it.

Smiles,

Sm

I was not raised a catholic.  I wasn't really raised to be anything other than a woman.
But I did become a christian in my early 20s.  Still am.  Ok thats the background.

I do have a religious icon fetish.  It is huge for me.  I can orgasm just walking into a religious building (be that church, temple or whatever) or holding something representative.  I have never and do not have any negative feelings on anything religious.  I just find the whole spiritual elements intensely arousing.  I can have intense feelings of arousel from the stone, the wood, the smell - anything that strikes or can be interpreted as religious.  I can also orgasm to organ and choral music, chants and meditations.

Not sure if that helps any with your question?  If you are wondering anything specific just ask, or mail me.

I suppose this aspect of my post reveals my inherent heterosexuality.  I find the uniform quite appealing, on grown women that is.  Something about all the lusting unrequited I did as a boy, I suppose.

Very good reply, I thought.  Also, I can appreciate that you respect the desire of your family to practice.  I'm happy for those who have faith and don't mean to knock it.  I just don't have it, and don't buy a lot of what they tried to sell.

Roman Catholic.  I've never quite understood what would be the difference from garden variety...

Now you have provoked me into a little nostalgia. When I was 16 I had a 15 year old girlfriend who wore an immaculate uniform with a green blazer with braid and straw boater hat and was the archetypal Catholic schoolgirl gone bad. She even showed me a lot of things I never knew and couldn't keep her bottle green school knickers on for a whole evening. I was just too damn young to fully appreciate and savour the whole experience which is a pity. I was like a bull in a china shop. Oh for the memories and the girls of Notre Dam High School.

I have a story for you too.
Once, I went to confession (I was 15) and all I could tell  the Priest was about my sexual fantasies..I was struggling with all these emotions, images of boys...just a normal developing human. Well, the Church teaches (still) that even thinking about it is a SIN!...So, there I sat face to face with this Priest and all he did was wipe sweat off his brow with his hanky...LOL. I went home, told my Dad and he fell on the floor laughing. (Duh...I didn't get the humor until I was about 21..lol)

Leave it to 'Cleaver!

See, this guy knows....  The uniform was a little different where I come from, but indeed, what an evocative image it remains.

I don't think I ever, ever mentioned the real deal in confession.  Our priests always knew who we were, and they carried that knowledge back into the classroom.  No way was I ever going to 'fess up to everything.

Funny, confession sewed the first seeds of doubt...

Tut tut How shocking! Giving the priest a ...well we can guess.

I never realised I was living quite a lot of men's fantasy at the time. If I lived it now I can appreciate it I'd be arrested.

12 years of Catholic school have definately given me plenty of triggers. *grins*  I still have my uniform from high school (black watch plaid skirt, white blouse, blue sweater, tie) in the bottom of a drawer purely for nostalgia sake. The whole schoolgirl thing is a real turn-on for me, but the person wearing it has to carry it off well.  My boyfriend and I used to steal away to the yearbook office to make out...  nothing like having to adjust your tie and straighten your nylons before walking into the hallway where your teachers might see you. When I see scene-people wearing the getup, I immediately wonder if they ever got a rap on the knuckles with a ruler from Sr. Mary Stigmata back in the day!  Sorry, can't help it.

I'm also attracted to the authority of the traditional priest garb. There was a teacher I had whom we all called Fr. Dom (short for Dominic, but still!) who was hands-down the smartest guy around.  Was always impeccably dressed in either black pants, shirt, sports coat or a very traditional cassock.  It's a different kind of swoony for me - not sexy but authoritarian.  Erotic still...

Finally (yes, I could go on awhile), I remember the thrill I got the first time I saw a picture of Bernini's sculpture "Ecstacy of St. Theresa" http://www.unf.edu/classes/freshmancore/core1images/sttheresa-bernini-2.jpg  It depicts St. Theresa in the midst of a vision where an angel appeared to her with arrows aimed straight at her heart.  The look on her face is one of pure orgasmic ecstacy and I still get stirred just looking at it.  This is from her personal journal, on which the image was based.  Someone just try and tell me this woman wasn't a masochistic s-type:

"I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, and at the iron's point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it. The soul is satisfied now with nothing less than God. The pain is not bodily, but spiritual; though the body has its share in it. It is a caressing of love so sweet which now takes place between the soul and God, that I pray God of His goodness to make him experience it who may think that I am lying"

Despite the brutality and cruelty I and the rest of my red skinned bretheren endured in roman catholic school. I can't for the life of me help, but to be wildly turned on when mi'Lady wears her "Habit" while punishing me. Equally erotic is her catholic school uniform.

All that erotacism was lost on me as a youngster. Hmmmm, I wonder what life would have been like if the sisters had let me stay left handed? Probably the same, but without the nightmares.

I know a few people outside this site who went throught the system and reflect Bear's feelings.  I wondered if this was a consistent submissive theme, just like hetero-dominants often fixate on the uniform...

Hello, OedipusRexIt,

I was raised in a catholic family, went to church each week (moaning the whole time at having to miss Tom and Jerry) and eventually joined the convent, though.. not for God (go figure).  I personally have had a wonderful sort of... relationship with parts of Catholicism, though I must add that they have all come from the beauty of the poorest members of the church, the sisters and brothers (who are the only ones required to take a vow of poverty).  It is always inspiring to see people who can commit their lives to trying to be better and do good, for no other reason that it is right.  Primarily for me at this stage, being Catholic is more of a cultural thing than a spiritual one.  It plays a part in so many of my family traditions and memories, that on that level, it will always be a big part of my life, in some respects.

I think that though, I do not identify with the actual political structure of this (or most any) religion and have a sort of strange ambivalence in terms of my own personal faith, I do respond to the highly ritualistic and intense structure the church and its rights offered.  I also was instilled with a great appreciation for the concepts of reverence and of the sacred (and the process of making something sacred).

I suppose those are the bits I find myself incorporating into this aspect of my life, specifically.
