Brosco,

I highly suggest using the 'block' feature provided by Collarme if there are posters who you don't wish to read. Threads often get derailed because people like to come in, have fun and this is entertainment time, but you don't need to read anything you don't wish to and there are plenty of people who respond seriously and save the Random Stupidity for the proper forums. Welcome to the chaos though.

Thanks for the welcome, but I do feel its worth pointing out that if people acted like adults in an adult forum and respected serious and honest conversations of others, an ignore list would not be necessary.

Nothing wrong with being online for entertainment and a bit of fun - but at the expense of others that are trying to have a conversation is downright disrespectful.

You sound like a real fun guy - I'm guessing accountant?  or perhaps parking inspector?

Post #14 (This is actually post #15)  (by me) expresses an opinion about profiles:

quote:

WOW - What a very interesting thread!  I have only been here a short while and have the impression that a good number of active posters here are not only reallife, but also don't even believe that there can be any form of 'real' relationship online - then I find this thread about using online profiles to promote ones self to find a partner.  I have never been to a munch where there was a bulliten board to post the profiles of the attendees.

I have no idea what is in my profile - I am sure I filled in some basic stuff when I joined, but other than that, nothing.  To some, that appears to make me shallow and not worth responding to - so be it.

Online, I have found that profiles present the authors perception of themselves, and may be far from reality.  To me it is very easy, if I want to get to know someone better, their profile is not the best place to go.  I look at the other posts made by the person, and not only does that build a better picture of values, tastes and beliefs - but, over time. will show inconsistancies if they exist.  A person would have to make one heck of a solo post for me to want to get to know them better from just that.

Perhaps you could explain to me how your posts added to the topic and that mine derailed it (if thats what you failed to imply)

Brosco

Well, you've misnumbered the posts and are now doing exactly what you accused others of doing and derailing the thread.

There is a little # in the right hand bottom corner of each post with an arrow pointing 'up' to indicate that posts #.

Your point is valid, but not on topic and you just got the #'s mixed up. You'll get the hang of it, but as I said, you'll be better served if you just block and ignore those whom you don't wish to read.

Hmmm.... After highlighting the above I have a few questions.

1. HNG?
2. Why are you here if online doesn’t work?

I'm not arguing with you.. just giving you a pointer if you want to make life easier and not interfer with your own fun here.

Celeste - who will not add further to the derailment.

You apparently want to judge people by the posts they make, and therefore I assume you want them to post honestly so you can judge their character.

Then later you complain that people are posting in ways you don't like - ok, fine, they derailed a thread, but that shows their character, which is what you wanted, right?  If everyone posted purely on topic and didn't editorialise or have a bit of fun now and then, how would you see their true selves?

Well said becca. you obviously got the gist of what I was saying, even if you didn't fully comprehend it.

Yes,  if I am going to form an opinion about another I do believe that their posts are a far more reliable source than their profiles.

No, I don't expect to see honesty, that will be something that I will have to try to assess for myself ...  and over a number of posts that honesty (or lack of it) usually shows.

And yes, you are right, that when disrespectful people derail threads they show their true colours and lack of consideration to others - I simply highlighted the opinion formed from someone doing so.

1)  I am not sure why you suggest I may be a HNG from my post, I woulkd be very curious to find out.
2)  I do not believe I have stated anywhere that online doesn't work.  In fact, I have had both online and r/l relationships and I can assure anyone that is interested that I believe online can be very fullfilling for many people.

My only point on the topic of this thread is that in making an assessment of the values, morals, honesty, etc. of another, I rely much more on the posts they have made than what they put in their profiles.

That definitely shines through!

Thank you

Hate to jump into a damn interesting Flame War but if you're a "geek" then you know damn well that most threads digress after the first 3 responses, so get over it!

BTW I think you need a SERIOUS attitude adjustment! If you can't play well with other children you need to find a place of your own to play with yourself...

LiliesDoGrow -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 5:51:38 AM)

Now now. No need to insult accountants. Just prepared my son the accountant a nice breakfast of oatmeal, no sugar with low fat soy milk. He weighs perhaps 140 at 6 feet. Yet he's an exciting young man with highly shined shoes. Better than being a crank head that's fo' sho.

Anyways. My profile states that I'm seeking love and pretty much won't submit unless unless I'm in a loving relationship. I swear my in-box is developing cobwebs from lack of interest. <sigh> But can't I ain't gonna compromise.

BrattyBottomRN -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 5:57:30 AM)

Can't we A/all just get along?

Rodney King thinks so.

zumala -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 5:58:06 AM)

Just read through everything...  A thought...

On the net, you only know what you can see in the text.  Not everyone here posts to the forums, so you can't always fall back on that (although it IS very helpful when you find someone who does post here).  A profile is simply a starting point.  When you first meet someone real life you don't know if they're honest, a liar, or a homicidal maniac in the first 10 minutes of conversation (usually).  The same is true here.  But if you want to meet people, you have to start somewhere.  At the very least, a profile can give you an indication of how much someone cares about details and how they present themselves.  Personally, if I see a well-written profile AND what it says looks reasonable, that's a good start.  For me, proper spelling, grammar, and capitalization are basic indicators.  That doesn't mean I haven't gotten messages that were properly constructed, but absolutely chock full of bullshit.  I have.  But it's a reasonable strainer most of the time.

Just my 2 cents.

CERCKL -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 7:16:37 AM)

Using quick reply...
Last night this thread derailed as well as another of this OP's when recognized that he was posting under two 'names' and claiming he couldn't shut one down...but yet responded under both names...the other post seemed to have gotten pulled, which is a shames, some of my best sarcasm, I must say.
As far as not liking other posts, or the feeling that they are childish...

I love when you all go off topic and get silly.....makes me laugh.   But even with the kidding around, I see that the questions are still answered seriously....well, it they deserve to be...lol

Tamerofwild1s -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 12:59:38 PM)

posts will go off topic .. to me all wulf did was lighten the mood a bit and it was actually humorous. I was getting ready to post it somones move next before it got wrecked with un-needed banter .. to put it mildly .. we all need a little humor in our lives otherwise we become an accountant with well shined shoes and a tummy fulla oatmeal . lmfaooooo ... sorry had to add my own humor in there . but none the less ..
we all look for some iota of a persona make up when we read a profile or forum post ... Wulfie is just a jester and has some excellent observations nothing wrong with that at all ... we all have something about us that makes up who we are and we should get that opinion out to people . it helps develop if nothing else a good friendship

 In My humble Opinion

Dustyn -> RE: Profiles (6/7/2006 2:22:08 PM)

Never been a big fan of profiles, simply because they are rarely truly accurate.

Usually, they either:
Play up strengths and downplay faults
Concentrate on the faults and ignore the strengths
Are so vague they are just unfathomable
Written so arrogantly that you just want to point and laugh

It's the main reason I refuse to have a profile, even to the point of just listing the likes and dislikes.

*shrugs*  Sometimes a profile is indeed one or more of the above.  Sometimes it's not.  Either way, it's certainly your right not to write one.  And you obviously don't care if some people overlook you because you don't have one, so that's fine too.

I just happen to find them useful in telling me whether or not I -might- be conversing with someone intelligent.  A profile can sometimes let me know not to bother with someone who's messaged me.
