His cancer should finish him within a couple of months.

NOTE - that's based on rumors and has not been confirmed.

I suspect it's true and hope that there's not a bloodbath upon his passing.

Hopefully Chavez's passing will herald in a new sustainable era of democracy in Venezuela

Cancer is a nasty death and I wouldn't wish it on anybody (well... maybe Fred Phelps) but I'm not going to be shedding any tears when that narcissistic, hypocritical, dictator breaths his last. Hopefully Venezuela will do better this time around.

I guess the medical care in Cuba isn't what it's cracked up to be ? The best care in the world according to some on here.

And while we are at it, King Hussein died of cancer in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, USA.....so the blathering and simpering isn't quite upto the rather usual sub-par level.

Based on what I have heard the last few years from the Venezualan ball players that live in my house during the summer, he isn't as popular with the people as he likes to say he is.

Hopefully, they'll pick someone better thes time aorund.

I don't know whether Cuban medical care is good or bad, but cancer's a bitch. Losing the fight against it isn't unexpected.

That said, this should create an interesting dimension in American Politics in the coming years.

Just imagine the possibilities for prosperity in Venezuela if they were led by a President that put the well-being of the people ahead of personal grudges and fanatical political stances that have often isolated them on the world stage.

I hope when he dies there is an orderly democratic transfer of government.

I believe there is no doubt that there is good reason for the Venezuelan people to distrust America and American business but times have changed and we could form a partnership that would benefit both countries based on mutual respect if only given the chance.

It can be the time for forgiveness and cautious optimism about our future rather than the bitterness of the past.

Butch

Where exactly in my post is such a thing even inferred, much less suggested? It may be bordering on rudeness to suggest you make more effort to read the posts you are replying to but its still worth saying.

Yeah, they've got tons of oil. If Chavez hadn't destroyed the economy, they'd be doing very well.

Time for the US oil companies to line up and take a number. They will be after those oil fields before the body is cold.

Actually, Butch, the Venezuelan people that I have met (Mostly ballplayers) and the Americans I know who have travelled down there all say the same thing. The rank and file Venezuelan people like Americans.

ETA It's kinda similar to the old USSR. We heard all this stuff on the news when I was growing up about "Godless Commies" and how they hated us but the few folks I knew who travelled there said the Russian people were REALLY nice and liked Americans.

Chavez, a dictator? You do realize he is democratically elected, yes? In elections certified as free by the Carter Center, no less. No, what you're all mad about is that social democracy is actually working. During Chavez's administration, the unemployment rate has been cut in half, literacy and education among the people have skyrocketed, and living standards have improved greatly. Doesnt sound so horrible to me.

I am pretty sure the German one would qualify for that, too.
