kalikshama -> Jay Townsend, GOP Spokesman: 'Let's Hurl Some Acid At Those Female Democratic Senators' (6/1/2012 1:53:59 PM)

A spokesman for Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-N.Y.) is facing criticism after advocating violence against female Democratic senators in a Facebook post.

Jay Townsend, the official campaign spokesman for the freshman representative, went on a vicious online rant on Saturday, which he began by taunting a constituent who voiced criticism about an earlier post on gas prices. "Listen to Tom. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz," Townsend wrote.

"My question today... when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector."

He attached a link to a Free Beacon article that claims female senators pay their male staffers more than their female staffers.

A moderator of the NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Civil Discussion Center page responded to Townsend, asking him to "please refrain from calling our members names." The unnamed moderator also asked if Hayworth knew about his comments or whether he had "gone rogue."

Comments from outraged constituents quickly followed. "‎'Hurl some acid' Jay Townsend? Do you realize what that means?" wrote one person. "Acid attacks are particularly brutal, aimed almost solely at women, with the intent to maim and disfigure. I couldn't imagine a worse piece of invective from someone who puts the Republican war on women in quotes."

Another commenter: "Mr. Townsend, do you think we live in Afghanistan?"

Richard Becker, a Democrat running to challenge Hayworth this year, released a statement on Townsend's incendiary comments.

From his campaign spokesman Barry Caro: "I'd be fired -- immediately and with cause -- if I said stuff like this. Which begs the question: why is Jay Townsend still Nan Hayworth's spokesman. ... Does she agree that we should 'hurl some acid' at politicians her campaign disagrees with? These comments are simply unprofessional and should never cross the lips of a Congressional spokesman."

"This isn't some obscure supporter or no-name right wing provocateur, and we're not playing 'six degrees of condemnation.' This is Nan Hayworth's official campaign spokesman saying some truly disturbing things on her behalf. The people of this district deserve to know whether Nan thinks what her spokesman is saying is ok -- and if not, what she's going to do about it."

HuffPost reached out to Hayworth for comment. This post will be updated if she responds.

Townsend is no stranger to politics: In 2010, the GOP strategist ran for Senate against Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and lost.

In an ironic twist, Townsend also maintains a Facebook page called "How to Run for Public Office" offering free "campaign and communications tips."

It's safe to say he could use a refresher.

Petition calling for him to be fired:

Jay Townsend needs to be fired right now!

This week, Rep. Nan Hayworth's (R-NY) campaign participated in a Facebook discussion with her constituents. The Facebook page where the discussion took place is called "NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Discussion Center," and is a place for constituents to discuss issues and concerns they have about the district.

Rep. Hayworth's spokesman, Jay Townsend, responded to criticism from a constituent by writing, "When is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector."

Hate speech aimed at women is wrong and Rep. Hayworth needs to make clear that it will not be tolerated by firing Townsend right away. Can you sign the petition?

Our message to Rep. Nan Hayworth

"Advocating violence against women is never OK. Jay Townsend must be fired for his comments right away"

I wonder if they'll explain how he wasn't seriously suggesting vitriolage after some DemChick gets her face melted at a town hall meeting?
I mean, it isn't like caribou Barbie had put a crosshair surveyor's mark over Gifford before she got shot through the head by a independentmarxist, was it?

As in the Gifford case, they will immediately issue the following Talking Point to the Right-Wing-Controlled Mainstream Media:

"The acid thrower was actually a disgruntled Democrat"

Just as the Right-Wing-Controlled Mainstream Media, within hours of the Gifford shooting, claimed that her shooter was a crazy liberal Democrat.

All I've seen is the one news story, but if this is accurate......well am I the only one who thinks this guy should be going to jail?

And where in the world do people routinely hurl acid at women - in the Islamic theocracies.

I have long thought that Republicans and conservative Christians share more in common with their Islamic brothers than they are willing to admit or accept.

DarkSteven -> RE: Jay Townsend, GOP Spokesman: 'Let's Hurl Some Acid At Those Female Democratic Senators' (6/2/2012 6:39:00 AM)

I'm assuming that there is no way he could have reached his current position if this was his attitude throughout. I assume he's had a personality change due to mental issues or drugs.

Ignoring the comment about acid-throwing, just the comment "Listen to Tom. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz" shows a childlike nastiness. Barry Caro would likely have pointed that out as showing complete indifference to constituents' concerns if he hadn't been handed a bigger issue.

Funny, the conservatives and republicans on this board do not seem to be calling for this guy to be fired.

I'm far from being either, and I don't think he should be fired. I'd suggest getting him into some kind of treatment - sounds like drugs or psychological issues, both of which are treatable. If he's just an asshole, fire him. If he has something treatable, treat it.

I'm rather surprised that this happened a week ago and his office still hasn't released any statements saying he's in treatment and stating that his comments in no way reflect his views when he's himself.

Haven't you ever heard of IOKIYAR (It's O.K. If You're A Republican)?

Actually, I am suprised that they haven't already fallen back on their usual excuse:

"He was just making a joke - and you Leftists have no sense of humor".

Becker insists Hayworth fire "acid attack" surrogate

One of the three Democratic candidates running against Republican incumbent Nan Hayworth for NY’s 18th Congressional District seat is demanding that the Republican Representative fire her campaign spokesperson, who threatened to “hurl some acid” on female Democratic senators.

Congressional candidate Dr. Richard Becker demanded that Hayworth announce whether she plans to fire Jay Townsend in light of his despicable Facebook comments made the behalf of her campaign. Acid attacks have notoriously been used to terrorize and punish women by fundamental Muslims in Middle East countries.

Becker also notes that Townsend’s comments may have violated a Federal law (18 USC 115). The statute prohibits anyone from threatening “to assault, kidnap, or murder, a United States official… with intent to impede, intimidate, or interfere with such official.” Relevant case law also makes clear that violating this law “does not require that an actual subjective intent to carry out the threat be present.”

“Does Nan Hayworth want Jay Townsend to be the public face of her campaign? Because to me, this is clear cut: Jay’s rhetoric is indefensible,” said Becker. “It’s just mind boggling that a Congressional spokesman would use this kind of incendiary and downright offensive language and equally shocking that his boss would not instantly fire him for doing so. The specific choice of words here is also particularly sickening. Acid attacks on women have a disturbing and disgusting history – they’re used almost exclusively to silence and punish women across the globe who’ve bravely spoken out on behalf of their human rights.”

“With every minute ‘No Comment’ Nan refuses to take a stand, she takes on responsibility for Jay’s hateful and hurtful remarks. Nan has a history of trying to duck tough issues – from her financial ties to embattled Rep. Michael Grimm to Rush Limbaugh’s hate speech – but she is out of excuses for further delay here. Refusing to take a stand now and fire Townsend would permanently mark Nan as unfit to hold public office and unworthy of the public’s trust.”

“Threats to physically harm elected officials for disagreeing with you are specifically banned by federal law for a very good reason; they’re just never acceptable, and are particularly corrosive in a democracy. The fact that these comments are likely illegal only highlights how far out of bounds they were – and how absurd it is that Jay Townsend is, as of this moment, still Nan Hayworth’s official spokesman. Words have power, words this symbolic especially so. Last January, the US Congress saw some of the ugly and real – even if unintended – consequences of calls for political violence. I would have hoped Nan Hayworth learned the same lessons from that tragedy that the rest of us did.”

None of the other Democratic candidates for the district has provided a press release regarding Townsend’s remarks to NYaltnews at time of publication.

That may have been a Bill Maher slur, although it was a guest promoting angry marital sex with Michele Bachmann.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I had angry sex with my (now ex) husband!
