About time! Rep. Nan Hayworth's flack resigns over 'acid' remark Freshman Rep. Nan Hayworth’s campaign spokesman Jay Townsend has resigned after remarking on Facebook that people should “hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector.” Townsend made the remark last week on a Facebook page called the "NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Civil Discussion Center." He was responding to another commenter and said Democratic women Senators who advocated for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act were hypocrites. “question today...when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector,” he wrote. Townsend linked to a FreeBeacon.com article that reported female senators pay their female staff members less than male aides. The comments prompted one of Hayworth’s Democratic opponents, Dr. Richard Becker, to call for Townsend to step down. Hayworth had said the controversy was manufactured by the Becker campaign, who “for months, hurled offensive rhetoric and imagery at Nan Hayworth on various Facebook pages, including the one mentioned today.” Townsend apologized for the remark over the weekend, but the controversy had continued to make bad headlines for the Hayworth campaign and reached a boiling point on Monday. Becker continued to call for Townsend to step down, going so far as to hold a press conference in front of Hayworth’s office Monday morning. An hour later, Hayworth announced that Townsend had resigned. “Jay Townsend has offered, and I have accepted, his resignation from his position with my campaign,” she said in a statement. “Now let’s return to talking about issues that really matter to families: job creation, spending restraint and economic development.” Becker’s campaign wasn’t shy about taking credit for the resignation. “The timing of this announcement, coming one hour after we completed a press conference outside of Hayworth's office calling on her to take exactly this step, was not coincidental. Our campaign broke this story, and for five days we've been leading the charge to hold Mr. Townsend and Rep. Hayworth accountable for the horrendous comments made on her behalf,” Becker said. “This kind of language is unbecoming of a Congressional spokesman and unworthy of the Hudson Valley, and we're pleased Nan Hayworth [belatedly] realized what most of us saw last week.”
