America’s largest wireless service provider plans to cut 1,700 jobs by offering its technicians and call center employees buyouts. Verizon Communications announced last week that it would reduce its nationwide workforce by 1 percent, and if enough workers don’t accept the buyouts, it will resort to involuntary layoffs.

Verizon paid chief executive Lowell C. McAdam more than $22.5 million in 2011, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of executive compensation. The company has paid its top five executives more than $350 million in the last five years, according to the Communications Workers of America, the union that deals most directly with Verizon:

More than half of McAdam’s compensation package came from “Performance Awards,” according to the WSJ analysis. In 2011, the company’s shareholders saw an 18.8 percent increase in the value of their returns. Workers, however, have not shared in those gains. Verizon eliminated 26,000 jobs over a two-year period in 2008 and 2009 — including 16,000 jobs in 2009 alone — and laid off roughly 13,000 more in 2010.

At the same time, Verizon has demanded sizable concessions from workers in its negotiations with unions, asking for the elimination of the company’s pension plan, increases in health care premiums, and extra leeway to outsource jobs, according to a release from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Are the jobs being outsourced to India?
That's where many of the American call center jobs are often outsourced to.

Romney Outsources call center jobs to India

The good news is, we are helping to create jobs in India!
This global economy is just damn wonderful, ain't it?

Marini ... when you called the governor's office long distance (outside Suffolk county) ... you got someone from a call center who was CLEARLY NOT your typical bay stater. Some of my less "Pro-Outsourcing" friends had a real ball with service.

Oh yes! The outsourcing...

Let' talk Fisker and GM for a moment and look at the outsourcing Obama managed with the Stumilus Package.

Fiskar spend a good chunk of their stimulus money to pay for about 500 jobs in Finland.

GM took a bailout and who still has not paid back the money they took from the American taxpayers announced from their headquarters in Shanghai last year that they will be developing an electric car platform... in China!

And then, of course, there are the 1,400 jobs to build military aircraft that the Obama administration sent to Brazil.

This "Romney outsourced a call center" issue is just another Obama tactic destined to backfire like all the others. He will regret having raised this issue because now he has a public record, and he will be held to the same standards he holds Romney to.

Verizon has gotten several awards for having such a good platform for womwen's advancement up the ladder, having more than average female executives, etc.

With the US corporate environment such as exists, this means that women's face stomping of those below them is rewarded more faithfully at Verizon than at other companies, almost on par with men's reward for such like face stomping.

They (Verizon) certainly made every frothing effort to such reward when my cousin (two years now departed) was struck with ALS and worked 3 1/2 years beyond original diagnosis but eventually could not make her way out of bed without assistance 10 months short of full investiture. They fought her every step of the way, to deny her everything possible. Even before she had to quit.

I forget which private and government agencies all ruled against her bitch bosses, but it was fortunately a lost cause on the latters' part.

The first three Verizon Vampires in that process probably all got rewarded for their efforts. The last one, who apparently failed in the end, was likely taken into a back alley, ass-f*cked, then shot in the head.

What a good thing it is that women executives have come so far in recent years, and have contributed so much to the evolution of corporate management.

They fought her every step of the way, to deny her everything possible, even before she had to quit. And not only to her dying day (the last of numerous "tough shit, bitch!" letters from the company 3 days before her death), but many months afterwards, tormenting her 80+ year old parents incessantly, knowing full well the situation all along.

I forget which private and government agencies all ruled against her bitch bosses, but it was fortunately a lost cause on the latters' part.

PS

She had worked for Verizon for 9+ years, but had worked for a company that Verizon bought 5+ years prior to the takeover. Ten years employment was required for full vestiture.

I have read that Verizon owns stock in CCA (Corrections Corporation of American) so profits from prisons indirectly that way..

They also apparently are providing telecommunications to prisoners at quite a profit since the calls are apparently collect to inmates families.. nice profitable gig if you can get it..

They are listed here along with many other major corps as profiting from prisons or supporting prisons for profit..
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/12/14/928611/-INSOURCING-Identifying-businesses-involved-in-prison-labor-or-supporting-those-who-are

Just another reason not to patronize Verizon..

I had to check out the site.. i clicked on "Our People" what bright shiny young faces!

I was particularly amused by Brandie (with an ie).. she just had her 5 year aniversary with the big V.. lol she is a "Door to Door Channel Manager".. I had to find out if that meant what i thought it meant.. she is in charge of people that bang on your door trying to sell you something.. just like vaccum sales does.. I guess this means that their direct mail, their annoying ads on tv and hulu and on the internet, etc isnt working well enough???.. that plus i would bet that the Door Channel Verizon Reps get paid by commission only so its their shoe leather if they dont sell & nothing out of pocket for the big V.. other than maybe an hour or so of "training" and a company polo shirt with Verizon slapped all over it..

If the American people were allowed to vote on issues instead of voting for politicians that accept bribes for campaign dollars to vote a certain way, we wouldn't have an employment problem in the United States. The American people should decide whether or not we want to be members of the World Trade Organization. The American people should decide whether or not to allow companies to outsource or hire H1B visa workers. The American people should decide by vote if they want tax dollars to be spent on foreign aid, policing the world, or on the the American people (incentives for job creation, single-payer health care instead of for profit insurance companies, secondary education, etc).

I am sorry to read this story, and it is sad.
But, there are millions of stories like this, and millions more happening every day.

Corporations often are altruistic and so benevolent, they have our best interests at heart, right?
Nothing corporations will stoop to surprises me, but we don't need unions.

Corporate Responsibility

To make an impact. Be a driving force for change. Continually evolving to be not just a good company, but a strong community. This is what drives us at Verizon. More than corporate responsibility. It's personal responsibility. And it's work you can be proud to do at Verizon.

You can put your heart and talent into work that you care about. Every day. In thousands of ways. Making your world greener. Safer. Smarter. Leveraging our technology to put words into action. In 2010, Verizon employees and retirees spent more than 730,000 hours doing just that, and Verizon gave over $68 million in charitable contributions through the Verizon Foundation.

From Verizon's Site

Yeap, two small paragraphs. I hear plenty of conservatives bitch and moan on an hourly basis that the White House's ethics and responsibilities with power are 'out of whack' (and its some pretty indepth paperwork). Yet these same conservatives are completely (if not eerily) silent on a large, national corporation's pathetically written 'corporate responsibility' page. That must be what the 'free market' and 'capitalism' is all about now: Bash Goverment, but write blank checks for Corporations.

Call it an educated guess. 1700 workers making say $75,000/year in pay and benfits would cost the company $127,500,000/year. Thats assuming the average worker is making $75,000 a year, right? What do you folks think is the average pay of those 1700 workers?

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, but that figure varies depending on where you live. A few weeks ago, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) released their annual housing report documenting the disparity between what minimum wage workers can afford to pay for rent and how much rent costs. While it’s not surprising that these workers have trouble paying their rent, it is shocking to see just how big the gap is in many states. For example, in Hawaii, the most expensive state, a person needs to make $31.68 an hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment. (An apartment is considered affordable if rent and utilities cost under 30 percent of a person’s income.) For someone making minimum wage, that would mean working 175 hours — which isn’t even possible (since there are only 168 hours in a week). The disparity exists for every state and commonwealth with the shortest work week in Puerto Rico, where you would still need to work 55 hours to make the rent.

http://billmoyers.com/2012/04/02/making-the-rent-on-minimum-wage/

WIth regards to the OP...So much for unions being the cause of all the problems eh?

That's because you'd have turned the economy into a long-lasting depression. You wouldn't be able to afford many of the goods you take for granted, and many others you couldn't get at all. There wouldn't be employment. 2/7 of production that is exports would die immediately, and the cut back in consumer spending (2/3 of GDP) and business investment would shut down many thousands of businesses.

Mongolian China, once half the globe, turned protectionist eventually--and China shrank to the land so desperate that it was ripe for the Communist revolution in the 20th century.
